That I felt kind of lost kind of homesick,

Kind of overwhelmed.

I want to find something that's really, really, really important to me.

[ Pam ] I've been an over-achiever all my life.

I have not failed at anything.

[ Puck ] I have no license because I drive bad.

And I have, like, a $, bench warrant

For not signing up to drunk driving school.

And then things kind of just fizzled.

[ Cory ] no, I've never been in love.

I'm into those fairy-tale kind of things.

Just because it'd make the transition

To san francisco a lot easier.

[ Pam ] I couldn't work there, oh, no.

But it looks like cool people hang out there.

[ Cory ] coffee shop jobs

Are the hip jobs to have around san francisco.

Even though it's not high paying,

It's a big demand.

I was looking all over for a job,

And I wanted to work at a coffee shop

Because I thought it would be fun.

So, how you guys doing on staff right now ?

Right now, we're really, really slow.

And how you were doing on staff ?

[ Cory ] it's hard, when you don't have experience,

To get your foot in the door.

[ Cory ] $-an-hour coffee shops want me to write a resume.

They're like, "we don't have applications.

We only take resumes."

I was like, "a resume ?"

You know, I may never find a job around here.

I mean, nothing may open up for a couple months,

And then I'm gonna be poor.

[ Rachel ] what are you doing tonight ?

[ Cory ] I'm going to fill out applications,

And work on that resume.

[ Cory ] it's hard to write a resume

Because I don't have that much experience.

[ Cory ] I think rachel's a great person,

And I think because we understand each other's struggles,

We have a whole lot in common.

I need to get to the public policy school.

[ Man ] it's like, a block up there.

[ Rachel ] for graduate school,

I want to study international relations.

I've applied to harvard, columbia, tufts,

Princeton and georgetown.

I'm waiting for my graduate school results.

I may want to be a professor.

I may want to do consulting.

I'm kind of leaving it open.

[ Pam ] I think rachel was the one person in the house

Who said she was most impressed that I went to harvard.

I sleep on average of three or four hours a night,

And I get up and go in the next morning.

[ Judd ] where you coming from, pam ?

Oh, it was kind of gross.

I don't want to look at your eggs and tell you about it.

[ Judd ] pam, I think she enjoys

Grossing us out just a little bit.

[ Puck ] pam is cool, man.

[ Puck ] I'm going to drunk-driving school

After I get done with court,

And I think it's gonna be a -week program.

It's called the "first offender program".

I'm not looking forward to it or nothing,

But, you know, it's there,

And I'll probably learn something.

So, you were surprised you got a d.u.i. ?

Yeah, I had like,

Two beers and a shot of jagermeister.

And my friend actually offered to drive,

But he was a lot more hammered than I was.

[ Puck ] I mean, I wasn't really that drunk, I had two beers.

I actually walked the line on my hands at one point.

Just to show off, you know.

They had me blow into a machine,

And it came up that I was barely drunk,

It was, uh, ., I think, or something.

Not a good sign.

Well...

[ Puck ] it's gonna be a pain in the butt

For me to take all that time out of my life

To go to school for drunk driving.

I mean, I don't think that's gonna be that cool at all,

But I'll deal with it.

[ Puck ] walked outside,

And this little dog came scurrying up

And like cowering at my feet like.

Like, "urr !"

And I could see the dog was hungry.

It looked at me and it said, "I'm hungry !"

Ha, ha, weasel !

I gave her kal kan food, and it was wet.

You love me, though.

She loves me.

[ Puck ] oh, yeah, she was the best, man.

I scored the ultimate dog in the whole world.

Little shrimp !

[ Puck ] I think everybody liked the dog.

[ Mohammed ] I thought it was the cutest little dog in the world.

You just don't find a dog like that.

Those are the kind of dogs

That people usually go crazy for 'cause they lost 'em.

[ Puck ] I mean, what can I say ?

I'm a pretty good dog owner.

[ Mohammed ] don't get too attached, though, man.

That might be someone else's dog.

[ Phone ringing ]

Let me ask you this,

Are there any clinics associated with yours

That do anything remotely like what you do there ?

[ Woman on phone ] no.

There's absolutely nothing I can do,

Yeah, I just tried to set up this rotation

For the past four weeks, or whatever.

I hate that, when, like--

Stupid people in positions of power over me make me cry.

You planned your whole schedule around this.

Originally, what was gonna happen was,

In two weeks I was gonna finish

This totally hellish rotation I'm doing right now,

Mm-hmm.

And work over at this clinic.

Now what's happened is the clinic says,

"There is no room for you to do it in two weeks."

It's like, putting me back at square one again.

I just can't believe she said yes,

And then, all of a sudden,

Now there isn't any more room.

Yeah, that's so frustrating.

[ Cory ] I'm also really frustrated about work,

And I don't know how to change.

[ Rachel ] I have a feeling you haven't been very aggressive, though.

Well, what am I gonna do ?

You've gotta go in.

If they say "start working today,"

Put on an apron right now and start.

You know, get aggressive, get in there.

But I'm not like that.

I'm usually, "okay."

"Bye."

[ Cory ] right now, I just feel pressure to kind of get established,

And I think I have a really hard time

Asserting myself, too,

A really hard time carrying myself in a way that says,

"Hey, I'm the one you want to hire."

I have a resume that I'd like to turn into you.

You see, the problem with hiring you here is,

You really have to know a lot about coffee,

And how it's grown, how it's cultivated,

And how it's roasted and all that stuff.

See, that's the thing,

I thought, at first, it was just a coffee shop,

But then, it's a roasting company as well, right ?

It's not just a coffee shop.

I hate when people say that.

I'm so sorry.

[ Cory ] I could not find a job squeezing coffee.

It was really frustrating.

It was a $-an-hour job,

And nobody wanted me to work for them.

One day when I was shopping,

I decided since I was up at nordstrom,

I'd just go and talk to the manager.

Nordstrom was one of the only places that was hiring.

I had worked for nordstrom down in san diego,

And since I had experience,

I was able to get the job more easily.

Oh, I don't want to go to work.

[ Cory ] I really didn't want to work in retail, particularly,

Because I'd already done it,

And I thought it'd be fun to do something new in san francisco.

[ Pam ] cory came to san francisco to try something new.

But, the flip side of that is,

She'd have to get away from a safe, happy job.

[ Cory ] I just had a really bad day with people at work.

I just feel like they forget

That people are what, y'know, the world's all about,

Not like, clothes and not t-shirts and not...

You know what I mean ?

And it just pisses me off sometimes.

Oh, it sounded so stupid.

[ Laughing ]

Well, you can't take on the problems of the world there.

[ Rachel ] me and cory have a lot in common,

A lot more than I thought we did.

We have a lot of the same insecurities.

[ Rachel ] I got some bad news.

What is it ?

I didn't get into princeton.

You didn't get into princeton ?

Nope.

Why do you want to go to princeton ?

Because I like their program.

Are you sure it's not just because it's that name ?

No, puck.

Graduate school isn't something you just decide to go to.

I didn't randomly choose princeton

Because it's princeton.

I chose it because they had professors that I liked.

They had programs to offer.

You don't apply and go through all that trouble

Without knowing exactly what you want to study.

I've been preparing for this major for two years.

Sounds like you honestly did want to get in there,

Not for the, uh, "name brand" thing,

But for actually because you wanted to go there.

Well, I hope you get where you want to go.

I don't know where I want to go.

I want to go away from being a messenger.

There's just not a lot there.

I see a lot of guys that are toothless.

[ Puck ] I'm kind of over bike-messengering, man.

It seems really dangerous.

I'm all banged up right now.

There's something else for me in this world

Besides being a messenger.

I got into it first because I was just into bicycles.

So what, you're talking about a whole new career move ?

I don't know.

I've known him for a while,

And, you know, he's a nice guy on the circuit.

[ Cory ] I haven't had much luck in the men department.

I mean, I'm really outgoing in some respects,

And then I'm really reserved and kind of shy

In a lot of other respects, so... We'll see.

[ Puck ] hi, I'm cory,

And some day I'm gonna sleep with one of puck's friends,

Makes it a lot more embarrassing, you know.

And it's not that big of a deal.

It was just a kiss on the cheek.

[ Cory ] I really wanted to go hiking that day,

So I called geoff.

I love being outside, geoff is great company.

[ Cory ] we're out there as observers.

We're not out there to be jerks or anything.

[ Cory ] should we turn around or keep going ?

[ Cory ] geoff is great company.

But at the same time, I didn't really--

I haven't just really hit it of with him,

In the sense that we can just

Talk, and talk, and talk, and talk and talk forever.

It's more like once the silliness is gone,

There's really not much to say.

You know how with some people you just hit it off,

And you can totally--

You just connect right away ?

[ Pam ] uh-huh.

I really-- I really-- I think he's the great--

You know what I mean ?

He's really cute and fun to hang out with,

But I don't know.

[ Cory ] I don't know if geoff's exactly my type, either.

There was this bird that was singing,

And he threw a rock at it to make it stop singing.

[ Cory ] I don't know if now is a good time to fall in love

Because I'm so confused about everything as it is.

I think I need to figure out for myself

Where I'm headed and what I'm doing

Before I fall in love.

You don't sound like you believe that very much.

I don't know.

[ Pam ] when cory and I talk,

I listen to what's going on with cory a lot.

Pam really seems to put everything in perspective

And take time out to hang out and talk with people.

You're very sensitive to those things.

[ Pam ] I think cory sort of sees me as this wise counselor,

As the old, mature person in the house.

Well, it's really hard for me to understand

People who, like, don't have, you know--

Don't feel bad when they don't do anything.

[ Cory ] pam is incredible.

I know if I had that much work to do,

And I had that much responsibility of getting through med school,

I'd be a lot more stressed out.

[ Pam ] I am loving my school right now

'Cause I made my own rotation,

Which is with health care for the homeless.

You get an ega or anything ?

We find homeless people and give them socks, toothpaste,

And toothbrushes and condoms and bleach.

And ask them if they have any medical problems

That they want to see the doctor about.

[ Pam ] it's not easy to do this sort of outreach.

You never really know where the people are.

So it's hard that you have to go and find the patients

And maybe no one's seen them for several weeks,

[ Judd ] finally, we went on our little journey

To search for the owners of the dog.

We're sticking fliers in doors

And hanging them up anywhere we could.

You ever seen this dog before ?

Never saw him before ?couldn't tell you.

[ Judd ] I gave the flier to a couple of guys,

And the guy mentions to me that,

"I've seen this dog on a flier about a block over."

Oh, oh, oh !

[ Judd ] we find the flier,

It's pouring rain, the dog's shivering.

She got puppies, too.

[ Judd ] we pull it off, there's nothing left of the flier.

We can barely make out the numbers,

But we can make out the picture.

That's the dog.

This is like, classic, look at that scenario.

She had little puppies.

Finally get through after two or three phone calls.

And I feel that was kind of the right thing to do.
