We have a stereotype that, Europeans have a stereotype

of us as rude.

Oh, I don't know what to imagine when I, you know

when I get to London.

Once I get there, I'm gonna stretch out on my bed

and I'm gonna smile and I'm gonna be like, I'm in London.

[Kat] This is the true story..

[Neil] Of seven strangers..

Seven strangers..

[Jacinda] Picked to live in a house..

[Jay] And have their lives taped..

[Lars] To find out what happens..

[Mike] When people stop being polite..

[Sharon] And start getting real.

My name is Michael Johnson.

I'm from St. Louis, Missouri.

I'm years old

and I'm a race car driver.

I'm ready, I'm ready to go.

I had a dream that I met everybody last night

and I didn't have a clue what I was doing.

And I showed up at the house

which of course, I didn't know what it was.

And, and when I got there

everyone was sitting around and they all knew each other

and they were all, like, good friends already

and they didn't like me and they were laughing at me.

I'm very nervous. It's a, it's kind of a scared nervous

but it's also an excited nervous

because, 'cause from this moment forward

everything changes.

We got a lot of baggage. We're we're going international.

'It's gotta go inside.'

They're gonna run you out of here, man.

Well, not, we're gonna unload in a hurry.

- 'You got money to give him?' - Where will you see me?

- At the International Terminal. - Where I'm goin' right now?

- Get to the check-in, yeah. - Okay.

[Mike] I've never been to England.

I don't have a clue about the culture.

Everybody smokes in England.

- Don't they? - Yup.

I haven't done any research on the place.

- Any neat stuff to see? - Yeah.

I just know that everyone tells me that it rains a lot

so I brought a rain jacket.

Museum close toBig Ben, which is a six story clock.

Big Ben'sa clock?

- Big Ben'sa clock. - Right.

I mean, does it look strange

as an American, you stand out like--

No. They like Americans.

- Okay. - They like to..

You know, most of 'em do.

[indistinct singing]

[Neil] My name is Neil, I'm from Oxford.

And I'm currently dropping out of a PhD in Psychology.

And I know I've had this opportunity

to pursue my true love, which is music.

I think you're perfectly capable

of making an intellectual approach to music

and hopefully getting something interesting out of it.

It shouldn't just be mindless noise.

I'm years old.

Being both misanthropic and xenophobic

I find it a bit tricky meeting new people that I don't know.

Hopefully they'll be nice, but they might be complete b*stards.

My name is Kat Ogden, I'm years old

and I'm from Yelm, Washington.

I go to school at NYU in Manhattan.

This is not my American T-shirt.

What is that?

- My grandma got it for me. - Kat, you have to bring that.

What excites me about the idea of moving to London?

Cultural differences.

Something about the American psyche

that I find difficult to relate to as an English person.

I went down to, um, the international office

that they have for NYU

and they gave me all these, these handouts

and one of them it said

Be sure you shake hands with the people.

There's an upfront friendliness

smacks to me as of insincerity.

I wouldn't say I'm nervous exactly.

I-I felt more frightened coming to New York for the first time.

You know, England is a pretty international community

where they have gypsies and bombers and t*rrorists.

So you gotta watch yourself a lot more than you would here.

- Don't carry any big bills. - 'That's pretty realistic.'

[male #] 'If they want it, give it to 'em.'

If they want your watch, just give it to 'em.

[Mike] My father, all my life, he's always looked

on the down side of things, it seems like

you know, maybe that's a father's job.

But I'm not really worried about it because

'cause I can pretty much deal with everything on my own.

Hi, I'm Jay Frank, I'm years old.

No, I barely graduated high school.

I didn't even think of doing my homework.

You know, my senior year of high school

I had a contract to put my play on

downtown, you know, in this theater.

I was publicizing, directing and producing it

and I was one of the

uh, potential scholars in the arts.

Oh, it's great.

Alicia, uh, my girlfriend, for one

is a lot younger than me, she's .

Tomorrow, I'm, uh, moving to London.

Now is my opportunity to give it a shotat the theater schools

and to see what the theater scene is like there.

Am I going to get to, uh, come back and visit you?

- You may reply on it. - What?

- Oh, you may rely on it. - Rely on it.

Alicia doesn't like that I'm leaving

but, uh, she understands it.

As far as being faithful to Alicia

it's not something I'm being held up to.

I've gotta be happy while I'm there in, uh, in London.

I don't know what'll happen.

[upbeat music]

[Jacinda] My name is Jacinda, I'm from Australia.

I'm staying in Paris at the moment

but not for long, I'm going to London.

If you're gonna do modeling full-time

you have to be prepared to travel all the time.

From until now, I'm

I've been traveling the whole time.

We just got back yesterday, Paul and I, from Amsterdam

and then I'm leaving again tonight. It's crazy.

To me, to have a house and to, to say

yeah, here's my address and here's my telephone number

and yeah, I'm gonna be here for the next five months

you can contact me, I mean that's, that's fantastic.

I've gotta go and pack all my stuff. It's a mess.

My hotel room looks like a b*mb hit it.

- Say I'm not ticklish. - Stop tickling.

With Paul, I've been together five months.

He's also doing modeling. That's how we met.

If I have time, tonight we're going to New York right away.

- I'll come up to London. - Okay.

- Okay? - Okay.

Paul wasn't, I mean, he definitely

wasn't happy that I was going, he was really sad.

Ten minutes to pay the bill and call the taxi

and be on our way.

We can predict what's gonna happen in five months.

That's longer than we've been together.

[man on PA] 'May I have your attention, please?'

'Flight , if you have not checked in here'

'or at the counter, you need to do so at this time.'

[Kat] My roommate is taking me to the airport.

I'm going to meet one of my roommates.

Well..

- Keep the tires on road, boy. - I'm gonna try to.

[female #] 'Yeah, and we'll see you in March.'

[man on PA] 'If you have not checked in'

'at this time at the gate'

'or the counter, you do need to check-in'

'at this time or your held seats will be released.'

[Jay] I flew from Portland to Phoenix and then Phoenix to New York

then had a layover in New York and that's where I met Kat.

[Kat] I was told that his name was Jay

and that he was this tall with dark hair.

I'm like okay. There's no way we're gonna miss each other.

- I'm Kat. - Hi, I'm Jay.

[Jay] My first impression was that

I think we're a lot alike in, in a lot of ways.

I think he approaches and talks to people a lot.

Very, in a very similar way I do.

- Where are you from? - Originally?

Tacoma, Washington.

I think he likes people.

And I-I'm not going to college or anything.

He wrote a play. To me, that's, like, incredible.

What do you wanna do in London?

- Fence. - 'What's that?'

Fence, like the sport fencing.

Fencing. How did you get into something' like that in Tacoma?

My grandfather did it.

[Jay] So they have that in the Olympics?

- Um-hmm. - Is that where you're headed?

I wish.

- What do you mean you wish? - Knock-on-wood.

He's like why don't you wanna go to the Olympics.

I'm like I do. I just don't think that I have the talent.

Yet, maybe.

[chuckles] Don't worry about it.

[Jay] Kat and I talked about everything.

We talked about theater

and we talked about why we were going to London.

I like Kat, I like her a lot.

So we do. So we're cool.

[Kat] It's always creepy to go into something

that you know that you can't prepare for the unknown.

It's not what you think you don't know about.

It's what you have no idea that you don't know about.

[speaking in foreign language]

My name is Lars.

I'm from Berlin, I'm years old.

Now you do realize that smoking

'is really anti-social in Britain?'

- Is it? - 'Do not smoke.'

- Are you serious? - 'Really.'

I don't know, my last days in Berlin were pretty hectic.

I had a whole bunch of people to meet

just friends that I wanted to see.

And then Thursday night, I had a DJ gig.

♪ Mean lean lazy and fine ♪

♪ That's the way I make it make it mine ♪

Which was pretty stupid, having a DJ gig

like a couple of hours before I had to leave.

♪ That's the way I move it that's the way I prove it ♪

♪ Just so you know here's how to do it ♪♪

[Lars] I don't know, seven people living together

the only thing I can expect is

that they're not like me.

There's not going to be seven Lars in that apartment.

[Mike] When I arrived in the airport, I went downstairs

and I ran into Sharon.

- Sharon. How are you? - Hi, I'm Mike.

- Hi, nice to meet you. - Nice to meet you.

- My first roommate. - I'm years old.

Oh, it's so weird I met you.

What do you do?

I knew immediately he was American

before he opened his mouth.

[chuckling]

He just looked very American and his hair

and he had these sparkling blue eyes.

I wanted to hug him actually. That was my initial reaction.

I just wanted to, like, run and jump on him

And just go, "Hi, welcome to England!"

Oh, my God, the doors open the wrong way.

Oh, you'll get, yeah.

[Mike] I get in, we get in the cab and it was like boom.

And she was like boom, boom, boom.

Right there, boom, Here I am, I'm Sharon.

I'm talking forever.

- It's like totally wild. - Yeah, well, how old are you?

- I'm . - Twenty, okay.

- How old are you? Oh, cool. - I'm .

So do you go to school? What do you do?

I am a singer, songwriter.

You're really sporty and athletic, are you?

- Ah, kind of. - What do you do?

- I race cars. - Oh, my God!

We just were like this the whole time in the cab.

And as I'm trying to keep up with Sharon

'cause she's so boom, boom, I was like yeah, yeah, yeah.

I can't believe you've never been to England.

And he hadn't been to England before, ever.

I was hoping there'd be somebody that was totally green

because then it's just such fun.

- Totally green? - Green, green as in fresh.

So I was thinking, yeah, I can take him around.

We can do the, the Buckingham Palace thing.

- 'I've never been here.' - 'There's so much to see!'

[Mike] 'I don't have a clue.'

- This, this is Edgmond Road. - Looks like an exciting spot.

I'm excited to find out where I'm gonna be living

for the next five months.

Same here.

People kinda look the same, don't they?

Can you tell us a little bit

about this section of town where we're gonna be living?

[male #] 'Yeah, it's what we call in England'

[chuckles]

It suddenly struck me then, I'm in London.

♪ Lyin' to the races ♪

And then it started getting really exciting.

Can we go through?

Come on!

There was this brown door.

♪ I'll take you there ♪

Alright, I got into college

I should be able to open a door.

[knock on door]

- They have a key? - Yeah, several.

[knock on door]

And there's like a hole that..

I think it's a keyhole down here.

[knock on door]

- There we are. - Oh, my God.

- sh*t! - Holy cow!

[Kate] 'Is this what you expected?'

[laughing]

[Jay] It was all too dramatic, you know what I mean?

But I thought it was like "Alice In Wonderland"

or something, so..

[laughing]

- Is this a joke? - Oh, no way.

I'm sitting here trying to play it all cool, you know.

[chuckling] Look at this place!

- I'm not going to-- - Look at this place.

Is this a joke? Come on now.

Six months, I get to be here.

I kind of ran over the whole house.

I was just antsy.

I wanted to meet everyone. Where was everyone?

[knock on door]

Oh, wow.

Jay, come here.

- Hi. I'm Neil. - Hi, I'm Kat.

First impression, he looks mean.

- Neil. - Good to meet you.

Neil comes walking in the entryway

and you just see this hair.

You better go run around this house, man

it's too much.

Yeah, you're so calm, we came in, we were like

Oh, my God, look at this! Oh, my God, look at that!

- What do you think, Neil? - It's pretty cushy.

- I like it. - You like it?

I like it, I can live here.

[chuckles] Maybe.

Jay and Kat in the house, I thought

Oh, [beep], they're Americans.

What about you? What are you gonna be doing?

[Kat] 'Um, while I'm here, I'm going to school'

I think, at Guild Hall.

'I-I don't know what I'm studying though'

because they don't have Anthropology.

So I have to start a new minor, which is cool.

Thankfully they seem to have brains

so that was a good start.

[knock on door]

- Hello. - Hello!

- Hi, I'm Kat. - Hi, Kat, I'm Mike.

Then we got Mike.

- Hi. - Nice to meet you.

- I'm Sharon. - That's Sharon.

He looks like a J. Crew ad, you know.

And that's Mike.

- 'What do you think, Sharon?' - I like it.

It's got that castle feel, it's really English

in a really quirky way.

- What's upstairs? - Well, you gotta go there.

It just keeps going forever and ever.

Mike, where you from?

St. Louis, Missouri. Where you guys from?

I think Mike, to me, Mike is

is a frat boy, you know what I mean.

- How old are all you guys? - 'Nineteen.'

- Nineteen. - Eighteen, nineteen.

Nineteen, nineteen, eighteen?

- Nineteen, nineteen. - Twenty four.

- Twenty four? The old one. - Yeah, I'm the old one.

[Lars] No one opened the door and after a while

I just climbed through this little hole in the door.

- Hello. - Hey.

- Hello. - I'm Lars.

I didn't know what to think of Lars when I met Lars.

Lars, born in Germany.

- Mike, nice to meet you. - I'm Jay.

Oh, Lars is cool. You gotta love Lars.

- I'm Sharon. - Hi, Sharon.

[Sharon] When Lars walked through the door

he was wearing all this leather.

I thought, right, he's a biker.

♪ Says we haven't seen anything yet ♪

I-I know I look like a motorcycle driver or car.

Well, that's, that's, like, not all of my stuff.

Well, you know what's in here?

Dirty clothes.

I know, I have a whole bunch of dirty laundry too.

I didn't do my laundry for, like, three weeks or something.

That's very inconspicuous.

I was waiting outside, nobody answered

and then this guy come to answer.

- I'm Lars. - Nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you. What was your name?

- Jacinda. - Jecinda?

- Jacinda. - Jacinda.

I like her.

Am I the last?

- 'You're the last one.' - Mike.

Jacinda, top model from Australia, you know.

[Kat] Jacinda is a laugh.

She wants to be a princess. That's what she told me.

- Is there a maid? - Is there a maid?

- Yeah. - Yeah, us.

- There's no maid? - No, there's no maid.

I'm just checking. I'm just checking!

She's got this kind of cheeky, little thing.

She's always doing something.

Does anybody need the single room?

I sleep with the lights on at night.

I fart, I snore, I stink, everything.

[Sharon] 'Aw, you go, boy!'

[Jacinda] Sharon said she wanted to sleep with the light on

and nobody else was really excited 'bout that idea

so she got the single room.

Maybe we should, like, just..

'Cause nobody really knows each other, just pick rooms..

Somebody said they didn't wanna share co-ed

so that left me and Kat and the other four guys together.

[Jay] But I didn't end up choosing my roommate.

[chuckles] It was all a blur.

I don't know, next thing I knew, there I was with Mike.

- So I don't know. - I quite like this one.

[Lars] I just felt that I have a lot more in common with Neil

than with Mike and Jay.

Look, girls' floor, boys' floor.

Shame on us. Girls' floor, boys' floor.

[screams]

Guys!

I'm glad I picked the room all the way up on top.

I never, I never have kitchen disasters, I never do!

I think from now on, the guys are cooking--

I am a really good cook. I will not..

- I, this never happens to me. - It's okay.

This happens to people on sitcoms.

- Do you need a hug? - I do, I need a hug.

[chuckles] I'm so sorry.

[Sharon] Everything fell into place so easily

'cause we were all getting along very, very well the first day.

[female #] 'Oh, God.'

It's crazy, the people are really cool though.

- I'm really happy. - 'Are you?'

Yeah, yeah, they're cool.

[female #] 'Tell me about 'em. How many? Seven?'

[Jay] There are three of us from, uh, America

and then the rest are all from Europe.

Oh, this is a tough one.

Um, I really hope that we will be, all that we--

[Jacinda] 'Isn't he romantic?'

[laughing]

He's so romantic.

I, I just really hope that we all become friends

and stay friends for the rest of our lives.

[Sharon] 'Oh, okay. Aye, aye, to that.'

[Mike] 'Where is the cheese now?'

[Jacinda] Jay's so sweet and he's so..

He was being so quiet.

It's his first time ever away from home

so I just tried to talk to him about it

you know, and see how he felt.

So you've got a girlfriend back in Portland?

- Yeah, I do. - Is it hard?

It's really hard because

this is the biggest thing ever in my life.

Aww, how sweet.

Jacinda and I got to know one another

and I really like her a lot.

- And so were you in love? - As best as I can tell.

Are you gonna miss her?

- I miss her already. - Do you?

I just talked to my mom on the phone

and told me that she talked to her

and she'd been crying all day.

Why don't you give her a quick call and tell her?

She's so sad, it would just make her day.

Hey, Alicia, this is Jay.

[Alicia] 'Oh, my.. What are you doing?'

Hey, what's going on?

- 'Oh, my God!' - It's nighttime here.

[Jay] She was happy to hear from me

but I, I guess being over here

I don't really know, like, what, what right I have

to really be in her life, you know.

- I miss you. - 'And I miss you.'

[chuckles]

- Neil is in the hospital? - Look at his mouth!

And I went downstairs after him, and there was blood everywhere.

- There he is! - There he is.

Mikey!

I'm gonna come out one hell of a race car driver.

[Kat] The Junior Olympics are a national tournament.

Good, yes. More that way, Jacinda.

Hello, I'd like to buy this for my girlfriend.

[laughing]

Jay.

[Kat] What's up with me and Neil?

There's a physical attraction.

That makes it a dangerous situation.

Shut up!

People just do not understand.

Oh, my God, it's a lion!

[screaming]

[Jacinda] I took my first flying lesson.

I love flying, I love being up there in the air.

Geronimo!

[screaming]

- Ow! - 'Yeah.'

[Kat] You remember that Cap'n Crunch Find The Captain?

- 'Yeah.' - I won $.

[Neil] 'You found the captain?'

- Yeah. - 'No way!'

Well, we had, like, so many kids, so cereal

it was just like, just went through, so quick and--

[Neil] 'Is that the one with Crunch Berries in it?'

Yeah. It's terrible.

[Neil] 'Crunch Berries isn't any good.'

- But Cap'n Crunch..' - Cap'n Crunch, man.

- 'Cap'n Crunch is so good.' - 'It's so gross.'

It'd be great to have Cap'n Crunch

'cause you can pour your milk, talk on the phone

go to the bathroom, come back and it's still crunchy.

[Kat] 'No, it's not, it gets soggy.'

Oh, man, Cap'n Crunch compared to anything else?

Frosted Flakes?

Man, you sneeze and Frosted Flakes is mush.
