[Mike] My father has all the connections in the world.

I would like him to help me and I don't know if he will.

A part of me wants to ask that

but the other part of me is just, you know, scared to death.

and I'm just curious to know if you guys are interested

in sponsoring anything.

Won't be until Monday.

[Mike] Racing starts in two weeks exactly basically.

I don't have a car, I don't have a team

and I don't even know what my options are.

[telephone rings]

'How you doing with the sponsorship?'

I'm actually on the phone right now.

Well, I mean, not now, but I'm, like, in between calls.

Oh, I'm failing miserably.

I mean, I'm getting absolutely zero

negative help from my father

who initially told me that he would help me out.

[male #] 'You know, I wanted to race and my racer left.'

'I gotta figure out what I'm gonna do.'

Well, I'm still here.

He was against me coming here from the very beginning.

And I mean, I'm really surprised he's even coming.

He comes next week.

'We get in at : a.m. on Sunday.'

- Okay. Okay. - 'Your time.'

'So I guess we don't need to bring your helmet'

'and your driving suit.'

Well, I don't know, I mean, I'm still

hoping to do something.

You know, he's like, Oh, so, it looks like

I don't have to bring up your helmet

'cause I guess you're not racing anyway.

You know, it was like, Well, I guess I'm pretty

damn worthless in your eyes.

'It's really a shame, I wish'

'I wish something would've happened for ya.'

Is there any way I could, like, take some out of my trust fund

to just do something while I'm over here?

'Uh..'

'Well, you know, the trust fund is yours'

'but you'd have to come home and handle the withdrawal.'

'I certainly wouldn't want you to do that.'

Are you really, I mean, seriously

are you, like, mad that I came over here? I mean--

Well, I mean, every time I talk to you, it seems like

you're trying to make me feel guilty for coming over here.

[Mike] 'I don't know what's going on with my father.'

I don't know why he's being such a [beep] to me.

And he's coming up next week.

And the funny thing is

is that I find my whole life, last couple of years at least

just trying to impress him in everything I do.

'And I don't even know why.'

And every once in while you find yourself

doing something like he does, you know

saying something exactly the way he does it.

'You know what I mean?'

I see a lot of me, like, in you.

Like a lot of, like the way that I was, like, before my play

before writing my play, whatever.

I don't know, I just really hope

that Mike can get to the point where he says

This is who I am, you know, and I'm doing what I wanna do

not to, not to prove to my dad that I can do it.

Maybe 'cause, I mean, maybe 'cause it's like, you know

since I was two, he just left

and that was the way it was and..

And I was trying to earn his love, trust

sponsorship money, whatever the hell it is.

Is that the thing you're interested in, his love?

No, seriously, I mean

I would never say to my dad I love you.

'I don't ever remember saying that.'

Yeah, but, I mean, you, like, feel it at least

every once in a while, don't you?

to look at my father's eyes.

You know, I mean, you think that I shouldn't even care.

You think that because my father makes me

feel so worthless all the time

that I have to go racing to say, to prove myself

You are somebody and you're not just this failure

that, that your father makes you come out to be.

So she's coming, this girl's coming to visit me too.

- 'Who?' - 'Her name's Marissa.'

[Jay] 'She's from Teaneck, New Jersey.'

At this writing conference I spent a week with Marissa

and just fell for her like I've never fallen for anybody.

It was like my first touch of love.

She was really my best friend for a while.

And she's a relationship in my life that's

that's been gone for a while

because Alicia has been there.

So we're, like, cool friends now.

And so she's gonna come visit me.

Oh, my God.

[Mike] 'So even girls come visit you.'

Yeah, she's gorgeous too.

Really?

[Jay] 'She's not your type, Mike, but she's gorgeous.'

She's not my type. What do you mean?

She's a poet.

I met Marissa and fell in love with her right away

in Miami at the finals for this writing competition.

It's like I opened up a book and read one of her plays

and it was like I gotta meet her.

And then she's, like, this gorgeous girl.

And it was like, it was too much.

[Mike] Eventually it got to the point where it just looked like

nothing was gonna happen

and then I came across an ad

for an AJEC Racing Prosport car.

[female #] 'Maybe looking for doing a test session next Wednesday.'

I'm there.

'If that's feasible, um, I'll ring you.'

Well, thank you for helping me out.

- 'Alright, then.' - I'll talk to you later.

- 'Bye now.' - Bye-bye.

Oh, I-I'm excited.

Cool beans.

[Jay] 'Alright, race car driver, when do you start?'

Mike is gonna finally get behind the wheel and I'm excited.

That is a neat-looking car.

- 'It's pretty, isn't it?' - Yeah, it's really neat.

Dave and Cher are a husband and wife

that, that own a BMW repair shop

and then they also run the AJEC Racing Prosport team

out of their shop as well.

I like this.

It's just so exciting because

when you talk about the best, fastest race cars in the world

this kind of car, the bubble c*ck with the wing

in the back, those are just the fastest ones.

And it's, and it's kind of neat.

You know, you're stepping into a whole new world.

But quickly, to get you in a test situation

so you can see if you like the car.

'Where's your budget coming from then, initially?'

I'll have to ask that.

Right now, it's out of my pocket.

I need pounds for an insurance deposit

and then I think every race weekend's around the same.

[Dave] 'You'll have to get your dad to pay for it.'

Yeah, I wish, I've tried that.

He was, uh, he was not more than willing.

I wish I could just call him up tomorrow and say

Dad, guess what. We got a sponsor.

Everything's going, team's all set, we can't wait.

Hey there. How you doing?

- It's good to see ya. - Good to see you guys too.

It was really nice to see them all, you know,it was like

exciting, like coming home from college, you know.

And except they were coming over to visit me.

You know, it was kind of weird, 'cause here I am in London

and they're here.

This is Leicester Square.

Right there is where you can buy half-price tickets

to all the plays, like "Cats" and all that stuff.

'Bollocks, there's another word for you, dude.'

- 'What?' - 'Bollocks.'

- 'What's bollocks?' - 'Bollocks is like, uh..'

If you say bollocks you're just like, don't care.

I learned an English word.

[Mike] 'Uh, this is our lower loo.'

We do have pretty decent hot water now.

This is Lars.

[laughs]

This is my brother, Duke, my father, Duke.

- Hi, Lars, nice to meet you. - Nice to meet you.

I can see why you ran away from home.

Mike's dad is like one of those guys.

You know, he's really well off.

He's been successful and everything.

So he comes in, he makes jokes and everything, you know.

And this is Neil.

Neil, this is Duke, Duke Jr.

Let me go put my shoes down, I'll speak with you.

- 'And Cathy.' - 'Hi.'

[Neil] Mike makes a lot more sense in the context

ofDuke, Dukie, Duke Jr. and Cathy.

[Duke] 'I think Michael should hang out with you.'

'I mean, you eat broccoli and yogurt.'

I think they're kind of like the Bundys

but with more money.

Well, that was my initial impression.

They're a classic 's nuclear American family

complete with remarriage.

And quite a scary concept for an Englishman like me.

So this is called Leicester Square.

And there's a little statue of Charlie Chaplin right there.

[Jay] We got about as close as I think I've been to anybody

and then we spent six months apart

and she kind of pulled away.

And then, we, so she flew out to Portland.

And we had a week where we got together

but it was like a goodbye type thing

where it was like, you know we can't happen.

Marissa was asking me about Alicia

and asking me about how I was handling the situation.

Is she weird at all about me coming out here or no?

- Oh, Alicia, no, not at all. - Cool.

Marissa had some questions about me writing

kinda challenged me on how I live my life.

- Writing at all? - Well.

I've been writing letters

that's been the limit of it.

I mean, you don't want to?

I mean, the only reason why I say anything is 'cause

you know, like I know you can do it

'and I think you should do it.'

You know what I mean?

You know, I love you so much for saying that.

Marissa was just scared that if I let more time pass

that I'd lose touch with the whole writing side of myself.

I mean, you gotta love somebody like that.

[Mike] I plan to see the stuff I haven't seen yet

with my parents, so we'll probably look like

typical American tourists, taking pictures of everything.

Do we have American printed on our face now?

Because everybody knows

and it's not like we look real different.

You know, I mean, we're not green or something, you know?

You know, you say when this is all over

you can't wait to come to the lake and relax and unwind.

- 'I don't know.' - What you've been doing?

You sleep, you go out and party at night

and you're asleep all day.

Wouldn't it be good to get a job here?

'While in, you know if racing doesn't pan out?'

Look at his face.

You could maybe teach in French or something?

[Mike] 'I have a job.'

I'm making more in the house than anyone else is right now.

[Cathy] 'Ten dollars a week with one lesson.'

No, I make, well, one week I made pounds.

Let's see, pounds

hour a week, that's a pound and a quarter an hour.

When we were eating and he was saying, you know

you should get a job, you should get off

your a*s and do something

I think there was some humor in it.

But I think there was some truth behind his saying, you know

this is what, you know, you should be doing something else.

[Duke] 'It's only for your own good'

'that we recommend that you get a job.'

[Mike] 'I can't give up on racing yet'

I mean, the season hasn't even started yet.

Does anybody else's parents tell them they should get a job?

Or just your mean parents?

Just my mean parents.

No, everyone else's parents loves them.

I have the only parents that don't love me.

We don't love you because we think you should get a job.

- That's lack of love, right? - 'Yes.'

I think that, that he wants me to get a job

but maybe if race car driving was my job

then he would support me.

You need anything while we're here

like clothes or shoes or

eyeglasses or a job or..

Sponsorship, that's all I need.

[Mike] 'Well, because you didn't do anything'

'at least you bought paper towels.'

[Jay] 'I don't understand your logic.'

Okay, people that don't do, all week

get to buy the stuff for the week.

Mike, go outside and like run or cycle

and don't like sit here all day and b*tch at us.

Why?

What's the point of bitching at us all day?

What's the point of not doing anything for an entire week?

We just had this conversation, like, two days ago

[Cathy] 'Your dad thinks you're kind of'

lonely and wished maybe you were back in the States.

[Mike] 'I don't know, it's a little lonely, it's a little tough.'

I really wish I was racing.

I think that would help everything.

'Something will happen somehow.'

Just accidentally, huh?

The Queen will come up and say, "Would you like care

"to drive for me, Mike?

I am looking for a driver."

I don't know if I'm hurt by the way my father is treating me.

I hate to leave you here, you're kind of aimless, you know

you don't have anything going.

No racing yet.

To come all the way over here and not race

it's, it's like a waste of six months, you know.

Graham Fuller, when he came over, he was like, you know

he was like "You can race anywhere in the world

"but until you've raced in England

you haven't competed with the best people in the world."

I knew when he came that, that eventually we were gonna

have to talk about the racing and what was going on.

And I was hoping at one point or another

he could see what I was doing, you know

so that he understood what was going on.

[Lars] I got along really well with Marissa.

She quite surprised me

because she seems to be a club person

like to a certain degree.

Oh, what's jungle music?

I've never heard of it.

Oh, you know, I can play some jungle for you

if you wanna hear it.

I was just gonna say, let's go upstairs

and throw Jay out of bed with some jungle.

Okay.

In the house, we were actually getting quite worried about him

because all he did was sleep.

He just doesn't really leave the house.

[jungle music]

[laughs]

Do you feel like dancing?

Jay, it's time to release the pressure.

'I can lift it!'

Jay was very alive while Marissa was here.

I like Jay much better the days that Marissa was here.

She did bring out something good in him.

[Jay] Um, Marissa and I really do love each other.

She's one of the most special people in my life.

[Marissa] '"This man and I were making love'

'"He tickled my ribs'

"and we only let the tips of our tongues touch.

"He smothered my thighs with his self.

"I gave him my belly

"and he thanked me for it over and over.

"Because it was he and I touching and touching

until I couldn't feel you anymore."

I don't know, I'm trying.

I mean, it's like, to me, I can't really read that

and like think of just like the poetry or whatever, you know?

'And so then to sit down and like, read your poetry'

and to be able to hear it and everything and, you know

and to, and to like get back and see like, all the things

'that I fell in love with, you know.'

And the strangest thing is like, like, like

touching you, like on the train and stuff.

But why did you feel weird on the train?

Mostly it was like, all 'cause of Alicia, you know.

'Like, right there it's just, I miss her.'

I kinda put her out of my mind because it's like

I'm just trying to do my best

to make sure it will be the same when I get back.

I know, I mean, I can understand 'cause

I mean, I know you love her and everything

but saying that you're trying not to change

I think that's a really dangerous thing to play with.

Because I mean, you're supposed to change

even if you were still in Portland.

I mean, you're supposed to change, you're supposed to..

You know, I'm not, I'm not willing to do

I mean, I'm just trying to do all I know.

You know what, we're just different and we're not

you know, we're just gonna see things different.

And as long as you're happy, that's all that matters to me.

So, you know, as long as you're happy.

[Jay] Marissa is just a person who I feel

knows me as well as anybody.

And I, I have this complete trust in her

and I can't ever imagine either of us hurting each other.

And so it was really good to have her come over here

and to have somebody like that.

[Mike] Since my father came out to London

the two of us have got along better than we ever have.

I know, it is neat.

They got the Formula One car.

He's got a new secret car that he won't tell us about.

[Jay] In the Lola factory, what they do is

they make Indy cars, Indy Lights cars

and Formula cars, I guess.

Mike Johnson, nice to meet you.

How are you doing?

Andrew was the guy that took us around.

He's the son of the founder of Lola.

And him and my father are really good friends.

So it's just neat to see the cars

and because that's, you know

that's the top technology

and you really never get a chance

to see anything like that especially in the States.

This is so light, you have to hold it down?

Yes, I know, it floats away.

When we finally went to the Lola factory

he seemed to get excited again.

And I think that the Lola brought it out in him

because he's been racing Lolas for ten years.

He love Lolas, he has Lola clothes, Lola shirts, hats.

Well, don't you want Lola to sponsor you?

I'd love 'em to.

He wants to get introduced somehow

so that he can move up the European racing scale.

I don't know, how does he do that?

He can do that through the teams maybe.

Or if you would front up a little bit of money

to run the car.

Yeah, we can front up a little money to run the car.

That would be the way to do it.

I did hope that he would, you know, eventually

try to help me out and do something.

Yeah, he wants to be a race driver.

He's really, he's very talented too.

He was saying, you know, he was saying stuff, you know

Hey, you know, he's real good.

He's done really well in this.

And he was like saying, Give the guy a chance.

He's not gonna destroy your cars.

He's not gonna, you know, to get me in a Formula car

to boost me up to see if he could do something for me.

I was having some problems with my father

and like when I initially got here

you know, I was really mad at him and was really frustrated

and felt like I was being rejected

and that he didn't love me and he didn't care for me anymore.

And it was like, Well, you're on your own, see you later

have a nice life, goodbye.

God, I can't believe I've waited ten weeks to finally do this.

Ooh, I'm excited now, this looks cool.

I don't know, maybe that's what a father is supposed to do.

Send his son out on his own

and let him try it on his own

and then be there when he needs him.

This is so excit.. Oh, wow.

Really turned out super, that's all it opens.

- 'Helmet.' - Thanks.

When he came up to visit me, it was like, you know

well, I guess he is interested in what I'm doing

and just kinda turned around

and now it's all back to the way it should be.

And it's really nice to have that again.

I have a sister and we share the same mother

but we have different fathers.

- 'Okay.' - And then I have him.

And we share the same father but different mothers.

And then he has a brother and sister.

Who shared your mother and your father?

- 'Only my mother.' - Only your mother.

[Duke Jr.] 'And they have different fathers too.'

Both of them or just one of them?

They, my brother and sister have the same father.

- But all three of us-- - Slept with your..

[Mike] Yes. The only thing is that none of us

have slept with each other, so..
