[David] It's a first for me
doing everything.

It's my first jam session in South Africa.

David is extremely moody.
One day, he is, like, a hilarious guy,

and then the next day,
you'd think he was gonna blow up.

-[crowd cheers]
-That was fun!

-Yes!
-[djembe music concludes]

-Thank you.
-Thank you, baby. [exclaims]

That was fun. [laughs]

[soft music playing]

[Kelley] Sometimes you're very quiet,
then sometimes you're sad.

I can't figure it out.
Is that just the David

that we're all going
to grow to know and love?

Or is there a reason?

Are you having
some kind of, like, traumas?

[David] There is distance
between the roommates and I.

I don't think I have any traumas. [laughs]

I give you my all or nothing,
and it's like,

it's hard for me to trust.

By nature, I'm a very complex person.
I'm even complex to me.

Sometimes I don't even understand
what the hell...

[Kelley] Baby,
we're all complex to each other.

-That's the beauty. It's, like...

This is, like, my life, in itself,
without outside influences.

I make it really hard for myself.

I want to get close,
I want them to understand.

It's definitely a challenge.

-I stubbed my toe today.
-[Kelley] That's called internal conflict.

That's called "Self versus self."

-We all have that.
-[David] I'm not asking for a class.

I'm telling you.
You asked a question, I'm answering.

I just make my life very, very difficult,
and that's the way I like it,

but at the same time, it's almost a...

It's a bittersweet combination.

[soft music concludes]

If I was moved into this house
and there was me and there was someone

who was, like,
half white and half Puerto Rican,

then there's five Black kids.

I'm all for diversity,
but I acknowledge that there's, you know,

people find comfort in their own.
I imagine myself in that situation,

and it's not a situation
that I'm entirely comfortable with.

When you see a clear division
between six and one,

that bothers me,

so I decided to withdraw from the six

and bring the one back in,
so we have the seven.

I recognize your unique situation.

And it's not one... not the same
as everyone else's, you know?

[David] You hit that right on the head,
my man.

[Matt] Safaris in the south half of Africa

are not what you see
on National Geographic.

You know, you have to go out
and look for these animals.

-[Chris] Your first hippos you've seen.
-[Matt] Look at that.

[Chris] Do you know
that the hippo can't swim?

-[Matt] How do they get across?
-[Chris] They walk on the riverbed.

-[Kelley] Oh, my God.
-[Chris] Do you see the croc?

-A crocodile there.
-[Matt] It's a beautiful female.

I am the crocodile hunter.

That's a Nile crocodile.

-She's pregnant. Yes, she is.
-[Melissa chuckles]

-[shutter clicks]
-She's been mating.

[Chris] Look at the other one.
He's got five legs! [laughs]

That thing is one and a half meters,
which is about five feet.

That is a matonda.

-A matonda.
-[Kelley] Is that the word for it?

That's a makunu matonda. It's a big willy.

-[laughs]
-That thing.

[lively music concludes]

[soft music playing]

I remember once, like, somebody saying,

"David doesn't really talk to anybody.
He just walks around, you know, going..."

And I was just like... they're, like,
"He's looking for something to do."

I'm like, "No, man.
He's got beats in his head, you know?"

He's laying down the lyrics right here.
And he's in his own world."

I'm like, "Let him be there."

We're both independent,
so a lot like myself,

he's felt a little bit, like,
the seventh person, you know?

The one left out.

It's hard for me, like,
I've been put in a situation

where I have to trust people.

And it's hard for me to do that.
It really is.

And it's easy for me to go to my world,
and I am content there,

but I can't... in this situation,
I cannot be content.

That's just not what it's...
I can't do that.

With this opportunity,
I've got to be able to converse

and to understand
and to trust six other people.

Right now, I need to be out there,
and that's just hard, it just really is.

I definitely need somebody's support,
you know what I'm saying?

I'm here, man.
I'll be your biggest cheerleader.

[soft music concludes]

-[somber music playing]
-[Danny] He's super insecure.

Like, tonight, we went out
to, you know, go look at these animals,

and he skipped that entire thing
so he could go exercise.

[Melissa] I think he's a poor example
of what Black men should be in America.

I realize that there are several things
about each of us that are very obvious

that you don't have to look
very deep to find,

but, like,
with him, it's just disappointing.

-Yeah, 'cause you want people...
-[Melissa] It's just really disappointing.

...to break stereotypes.

Sometimes I feel guilty
because, you know, in this situation

there are only two minorities,

and we should be able
to communicate, you know?

And we're just not.

-[Danny] It is sad.
-[somber music concludes]

-[djembe music playing]
-[Chris] So, who's jumping?

Are you jumping?

Bungee, I told myself, "No. Never."

And Melissa.

-[Chris] You jumping?
-It'll be fun.

Don't you want the feeling
you had when you abseiled?

Yeah, but I had control
over that, and I was mad safe.

This is pretty safe.

-It's very safe.
-Yeah, I heard about that.

[David] Whoo! That's a long way to fall.

-[Chris] Three, two, one, bungee!
-[men cheer]

-[Kelley] Oh, my God!
-[Melissa laughs]

[David] I'm walking on the bridge.
I'm already having doubts,

and I see homeboy,
he just goes ahead and jumps willingly,

and I think to myself,
this whole South Africa trip

is a big thing because it's a first.

[Julie] If you think for one second
that you'll get on that bus

and wish you would've done it, do it now.

[David] "Don't think.
Don't think, just go."

I'm trying to prove myself,
and right now, I'm getting to that point.

So you'll be the first one.

Dude, you don't even know.
Black people don't bungee!

-[Chris] Bungee!
-[David screams]

Your main attachment if you jump forward
would be around your shins, okay?

As a backup harness,
you'll have something around your waist.

So there's never a time

where you're just connected
by one thing only.

So the safety factor is very, very good,

and the enjoyment factor
is as good. It's as good.

-[laughs]
-I believe that. I believe that.

I'm already having doubts with it.
I'm already having "No's."

I shouldn't even say "doubts,"
"no's" right about now.

-[Melissa] Ask him has anybody died.
-What's that?

-[Melissa] Go ask him has anybody died.
-I ain't asking him that.

What you want to do
is look straight out to the horizon.

I'm going to give you
a five-second countdown.

When you hear "Bungee,"
dive out as far as you can.

-Bungee!
-[Jamie screams]

-[Melissa] Oh, my God!
-[Jamie screams]

-[chuckles]
-[Jamie] When you rebound,

I'm looking at, like,
all of Victoria Falls.

-It's incredible.
-[Chris] Next victim.

When you hear "Bungee,"
just launch out as far as you can.

[Matt] I am scared to death.

[Chris] Five, four, three,
two, one! Bungee!

[Matt] Whoo!

-[Melissa] Oh, my goodness!
-[Matt] Whoo!

-[Julie chuckles]
-[Kelley chuckles]

-[Chris] Is this your first time?
-[Julie] I have really small ankles.

[Chris] That's okay, that's okay.

-[man] Okay, knees apart.
-[sighs]

Up we come. Just enjoy.
Just walk with me. It's okay.

The longer you stay here,
the worse it becomes.

All right, here we go.
Hands on the padded railing.

That's it. Keep going. Don't look down.

On your right, Julie, you'll see videos

and intelligent and cool.

-[upbeat music playing]
-[David] Julie!

[all cheer]

-[Melissa screams]
-[laughs]

It's like a natural high, you know?
[chuckles]

Who needs drugs
when you have bungee cords?

-Oh, my God! That was so cool!
-[Melissa laughs]

You looked great going down, girl. Wow.

-Julie, you are crazy!
-[laughs]

-[Chris] David's going?
-[all cheers]

You're in another country.
You're in another continent.

You're probably never going
to have this experience again.

Ain't never done nothing like this before.

If you die, you died doing something
you never did before.

-So just go ahead and just do it.
-Hands on the railing.

Toes over the edge, mate.

A little bit more, David.

I'm thinking, "What the hell am I to do?"

And on your left,

I'm looking down,
I'm looking at the running water.

It's just dead silent because...
I mean, you can't hear anything.

All you hear is the wind.

Yes, Dave! Whoo!

-[laughs]

[groans, laughs]

[Matt] You know, Jamie,
bungee jumping was very much

-a spiritual experience.
-[Jamie] Completely.

It's the most amazing thing
I've ever done.

You love life after you jump

[Jamie] When you came up
from the bridge, dude,

I just saw it in your eyes, man,

just, like, absolute...
the euphoria of it, almost.

[Matt] Those guys underneath the bridge

-that helped you get up.
-[Jamie] Yeah.

I, like, had such a strong feeling
for them, like,

"Thank you for helping
making this happen." [chuckles]

They're just common people
that learned what to do with the ropes.

[David] You're exchanging
bungee stories without me?

I'm using this trip to try to, you know,
get to know people

'cause I'm not really there,
I'm still the odd man out.

[Matt] And David's, like,
"I'm in the club, too."

-[Jamie laughs]
-[upbeat music concludes]

-[Chris] Morning, Jamie.
-[slow music playing]

[Chris] Morning, guys.

Time to rise and shine. [chuckles]

We went to bed early last night.
I got up at four o'clock today.

I'm not going.
I'm really not in the mood for animals.

-[Julie] You are so coming.
-[Melissa] I'm not.

I'm already in a bad mood,
and to look at animals

defecating and raping each other.

-No, thanks.
-[Chris laughs]

[Julie] When you just look
at the way animals live,

you get a better concept
of what's important in life.

[Chris] There it is.
Yes, there. Stop. Giraffe.

-[Melissa] Oh, my Lord. [screams]
-[Chris chuckles]

[Julie chuckles]

[Matt] It's awesome. We're not at the zoo.

We are watching zebras
run across grassy fields.

It's fun stuff.

[David] These monkeys
just chilling in the tree.

One of Nietzsche's pupils,

he was saying that as humans,
our idea of perfection,

if you can look in your soul
and you can feel

that you can be more than just human,
then there's a way to do it.

That's what Nietzsche
was all about. Superhuman.

[David] I can't talk to Jamie
about Wall Street.

Don't know a damn thing about it.

So if I have to connect
with him with philosophy, then cool.

And the only reason
why you stop yourself

is because others around you
say, "It's not possible."

However, you got to be above that.
In a sense, it's just phenomenal, dude.

There was a time I was thinking
of joining the Nation of Islam,

and that was a militant time of my life.

Scary.

-Is it violent?
-It's not violent. It's just...

That's like the Black Panther movement?
Or am I mixing those two things up?

You're mixing them up, but
they do have the same principles almost.

She's really reaching to understand
and that's cool.

[Kelley] David feels as though
he's become alienated

and nobody really wants to go
out of their way to give him a hand.

After my dad got divorced,
and being he's a pastor,

and he's preaching all this stuff,

obviously, I'm thinking,
"Okay, that must be wrong."

I need to find myself
a new identity completely."

I wanted to completely
sever myself from him

and everything he ever taught.

So, to join the Nation of Islam
or anything that directly conflicts

with what he's taught
would be great for me.

Never thought that I'd be able
to have a conversation,

especially with her,
about something this deep.

So if I got to connect with Jamie
with philosophy, let us do that.

If I got to connect
with Kelley with church,

-then let's do that, too.
-[upbeat music playing]

[Melissa] Something clicked
with David in the past two days.

I don't know what it was.
I think Julie actually talked to him.

[Kelley] I had a conversation
with him about his dad and, like,

how he wanted to be in...

I can't believe I just forgot this.

-[Melissa] The Nation of Islam?
-Yeah.

He's opening up and he told us
about working at McDonald's.

I didn't know
he was a manager at McDonald's.

I think because
he's forced to be in a situation,

he can't just leave
and make phone calls and la-de-dah-de-dah.

He has felt
the effects of his exclusivity,

and it has made him feel like crap, I bet.

This village trip
is the last thing that we do.

Show me love. Show me love.

Show me love. All right, now.

There is no way
you can understand the power,

the magnitude that this place could have
on a person's emotions

without actually walking through.

[indistinct chatter]

This right here is this right here.

[Melissa] To see these children smiling
and still happy, living in such destitute,

makes me feel very spoiled.

-[kids laugh]
-[laughs]

The spirit of the people in the township
is overwhelming to me.

-[kids laugh]
-[Julie] Whoo!

I physically cannot stand
amongst these children

and look into their eyes
and see their hands open to me

-and not feel those hands.
-[upbeat music concludes]

-Want to trade?
-[somber music playing]

I gave her something,
and she gave me something.

But as soon as I put something
in their little hands,

they pounce on each other, and they fight.

That ugliness, that human greed.

I don't have any more necklaces.
They're all gone.

-[indistinct clamoring]
-[groans]

It's hard 'cause, like, they all...
I want to give them all stuff,

-but I can't 'cause they...
-Well then don't give anyone anything,

because it starts like that, and now,
you're going to start fights.

-Just don't do it.
-I know.

I leave the village,
wishing that I hadn't brought anything.

I'm sorry I made them fight,
I didn't mean to.

[David] This is really,
really special to me.

Trey was this little kid
who I was a big brother to, a mentor,

and before he passed away,
he gave me this doll,

and no matter where I go,
I just take it.

I'm giving that kid a very,
very big part of me

because Trey makes
a very big part of my life.

The kid doesn't even understand.

As a matter of fact,
I could never explain to anybody in words,

but that's just what it is,
the inspiration I have,

-About to pass it on.
-[indistinct chatter]

David stepped outside of himself
very much to be able to do that,

to be able to give something
that mattered to him so much,

and it's things like that that David does

that makes me know he's more
than his bad attitude.

I will always remember Trey,
I will always love Trey,

and it's almost as if the joy
that Trey gave me

is now with this other kid.
You know, I know he would have been happy.

It taught me a lot about

appreciating what I have.

[Melissa] You're a different man
since Africa,

and I would like to talk
to you about that.

-[chuckles]
-I think your whole vibe has changed.

[David] Word. Really?

The funk has been lifted,
something's gone.

He had this catharsis and thought,

"Gosh, my bad attitude
is really bad for the group,"

and he decided
that he wants to change that.

-We'll talk.
-[David] All right, babe.

-We'll talk.
-[Melissa] All right.

-[slow music playing]
-I see this as an opportunity

to get my foot in the door with him.

We don't know
how to communicate with each other.

Like, ever since that first week,
it's just been downhill.

-[David chuckles]
-You know?

I've learned my lesson
in approaching him,

not so much a confrontational manner,
but in a "needing to understand" manner.

We've all kind of felt like
sometimes we can't approach you.

[David] I know I give that vibe,
and I'm conscious of the fact

that I give that and I don't want to.

I wouldn't say I'm a new person,
but my motivations are different.

I see that you're by yourself,
but a lot of times,

I've just felt like
you've wanted to be that way.

When six of you go out like that,

I want to go,
we're a family, but it's, like,

I'm thinking to myself,
"If I get up, do they want me to go?"

And if I have to think about that,
I'm like, "Forget it."

I'll just stay here and make another song.

I don't think
the house has an understanding at all

that he is sensitive
and may be needing a friend to talk to.

We have wanted to include you,

and we were hoping that South Africa
would be the time that we could do that,

and you changed completely
when we got back from South Africa.

[David] South Africa.

The land, the people
and everything just manifested

into this brick wall that said,

"Look, you're doing
everything the wrong way."

For your situation, it sucks,
but you're gonna have to be

the first one to step in and say,
"You guys, this is how it was."

I don't like it that way.
Let's make it this way."

We'll let it marinate.
We'll talk about that and let it marinate.

[slow music concludes]

-I always do it goofy like this way.
-And then you turn.

You just get your center low
and kind of lean forward

and do your arms with it,
and it'll make it easier.

Almost like you're walking.

-Pump your arms the right way.
