[theme music playing]

[Jamie] This is the true story...

[Matt] ...of seven strangers...

[Melissa] ...picked to live in a mansion...

[Kelley] ...work together...

[Danny] ...and have their lives taped.

[David] To find out what happens...

[Julie] ...when people stop being polite...

[Jamie] ...and start getting real.

-The Real World.
-[Julie] New Orleans.

[theme music concludes]

-[rock music playing]
-[crowd whistling, cheering]

Oh, god. Oh, my God.

-What do you want? On me.
-[indistinct chatter]

[Jamie] It's such peer pressure
with my friends in town.

Every weekend, there's people visiting.
Every weekend, those people want to rage.

I don't want to let them down.

-[rock music concludes]
-I've lost perspective of God.

Going to strip clubs
on the Sabbath is not good.

It's a Sunday night at,
like, 2:00 in the morning

after a crazy weekend.
[groans] Get me home and

clean me up, and get me away
from this party town.

-[soft rock music playing]
-[birds chirping]

Normal people don't do this.

-They don't... Every weekend.
-Yeah. [chuckles] Oh, I've noticed.

Host and go out till 6:00
in the morning, and, you know.

[Matt] Jamie, through college,
has developed a habit

being a partying guy,
and it's not doing him any good.

I really genuinely want to live my life
without a lot of that stuff.

And he knows that if he keeps
indulging in these ephemeral pleasures,

it's not gonna help him along that road.

[Jamie] It's so important for me
to have, like, a breakaway from this

insane, intoxicating debauchery.

[Matt] It's kind of like, you know,
the "morning after" thing.

After all the indulgence,
just laying there, open up your eyes,

and think, "What did I do last night?

-Was it worth it?"
-Was it worth it, yeah.

[Matt] If it doesn't give you peace
and happiness, then it's not worth it.

If it's not, well, you got to cut it away.

-[Matt] Whittle that right off.
-[laughs] I hear you, man.

He's realizing there's parts
of his life that cannot stay

if he's going to continue
to grow as a spiritual person.

Like, last night I just had
to finally just draw the line

-and be like, you know, "Enough."
-Yeah. [chuckles]

[soft rock music concludes]

[jazz music playing]

[kisses, laughs]

Oh, Jamie!

[laughing]

-I need a man, dude.
-Yes, you do.

[Melissa laughs]

-You definitely need a man.
-[Melissa] Why?

'Cause you're horny.

-She needs a man, too.
-See you later.

Julie, you need a man, too.

[Julie] I don't need no stinkin' man.

[Jamie imitating]
I don't need no stinking man.

[Melissa laughs]

Jamie, I don't need
a man because I'm horny.

I need a man because
I need love and affection and attention.

-[sighs]
-[Melissa sighs] My goodness.

[kisses]

I just don't know
what to do with myself, Jamie.

[jazz music concludes]

You know, when you say grace,
do you say, like, a specific grace,

-or like...
-Just whatever you want to say.

We don't have memorized
prayers in my church.

[Jamie] Really? So, like,
I mean, if you don't mind,

what would be an example
of something that you'd say?

-That I'd say?
-[Jamie] Yeah.

I think Julie and I, we can really
learn a lot from each other.

I like to talk with her about her faith.

I ask for blessings for people I love.

I don't know.
Whatever you feel like you want to say.

[Jamie] That's cool.
I'm gonna start doing that.

You are? That's cool. I'm glad
you're going to pray. That makes me happy.

-[Jamie] I will pray above these ramen.
-[Julie chuckles]

[upbeat music playing]

I was thinking I was going to go
to the museum tomorrow.

-I'm praying. [laughs]
-[Julie] Sorry, sorry. [laughs]

I'm going to listen to my music.

-Hold on. I will be done in two seconds.
-[Julie laughs]

All right, that was good.

[upbeat music concludes]

-[Matt] Melissa?
-Yes?

-[Matt] Your boy's here.
-[Melissa] Oh, my God! Okay.

-[Matt] I made him wait outside.
-[Melissa] What?

-Why did you do that to him?
-I do it to all the guests.

[mild tempo music playing]

-I don't know who he is.
-[sighs]

I've never gone
a long time without a boyfriend.

Hello. How are you doing?

And that is rooted
in my deep codependency.

Look at this.
I'm putting you in my Palm Pilot.

-This means you're somewhat important.
-Thanks.

[Melissa] See you later, Matt.

[traffic whizzing]

[mild tempo music concludes]

[streetcar bell dinging]

-[waitress] There you go.
-[Melissa] Thanks.

You're welcome.

[soft rock music playing]

[Eric] I'm not going to pull you,
like, and lead you on.

-I'm seeing someone else.
-Oh, my goodness.

-[Eric] Give you a vote of confidence...
-I can't believe you just did that to me.

-[laughs] No, it's fine.
-[Eric] I mean...

-I don't want to lie to you about it.
-[Melissa] No, no.

And, you know, I want to be your friend.

[sighs]

I mean, it's really unfair.

How many times can one girl
have her heart broken? How many?

-[Eric] Erasing my number?
-[laughs] Oh, my God.

No, I didn't erase it.
I swear, look. But I did add a little...

I edited it.

-I changed your title.
-[Eric] What title do I have now?

[Melissa] It says,
"Eric, has a girlfriend."

-[Eric chuckles]
-[laughs]

I'm such a dork when it comes to boys.

I had fun. Thank you.

I probably should retire
that game for a little while...

See you later.

...and work on me. [sighs]

-Where is Julie?
-[Jamie] She's upstairs.

-[Julie gasps]
-He so has a girlfriend.

[Julie] Oh, how do you know?

-He told me just now.
-What?

Right now, Melissa needs
to quit trying to change the external

and start working on the internal.

And that's the way
she's going to start to find happiness.

[Melissa] He had the friendship talk
with me, and we weren't even going out.

I mean, I felt like I got dumped.

He should not have done
that to me, though.

[soft rock music concludes]

[dramatic music playing]

-[Jamie snickering]
-[Julie laughing]

Look at us talking about this.

-I'm a good kisser.
-Are you?

[Jamie] Yes.

-I don't any of that alien tongue.
-[chuckles]

Oh, no. What is it, church tongue?
What kind of tongue do you have?

[Jamie] Out of the seven roommates,
Julie the virgin... [laughs]

...has the strongest sex drive
in the whole house.

-You're a biter.
-[Jamie] I'm just delicate.

-You're a nibbler.
-[Jamie] A nibbler, that's the word.

[Julie] But I can never kiss you.
I live with you, man.

-Oh, if you kissed me...
-Oh, you'd rock my world, would you?

-[Jamie] I'm saying, if you kissed me...
-[chuckles]

Julie wants a challenge.
She's interested in people that

would be hard to attain.

If I kiss you, like, first of all,
Melissa and I would no longer be friends,

-I have a feeling.
-Why?

I don't know, 'cause I just think she
would take something like that very bad.

I honestly think that
she has feelings for Jamie.

And I don't want anything
to come between Melissa and I

because she means the world to me.

-[Jamie snickering]
-[laughs]

Look at us talking about this.

-[dramatic music concludes]
-[seagulls squawking]

[mild tempo music playing]

-Do you know what Zazen is?
-No.

[Jamie] It's something
that is very difficult to master

because it is the practice of sitting
and concentrating together.

"It is not about philosophy, ethics,
or religion. It is simply the practice

of waking up to reality
and being present and aware."

All of the faiths
have very valuable paths to this

understanding of a higher consciousness.

And I'm just sort
of exploring those paths.

Let's practice 30 seconds of Zazen.

Be mindful of everything.
The cars, the trees, me, you, everything.

Okay, let's go.

-[mild tempo music concludes]
-[streetcar bell dinging]

[church bell tolling]

-[birds chirping]
-[dog barking]

See our car?
Think I can hit it with this grape?

You just lost. It's 30 seconds
of silent sitting concentration.

-Oh, sorry. [laughs]
-[Melissa laughs]

[Jamie] I've definitely realized
that contemplative existence

is so much better, but I'm not there yet.

It's an evolution.
It's a constant. It's never-ending.

[upbeat music plays]

Yo, I have a party
we can go to tonight at six o'clock.

It's at a big gallery.
All the, like, trendy artists are going.

It'll be full of pretentious,
emotional people.

[Melissa] We would have so much fun there.

[seagulls squawking]

[streetcar bell dinging]

[indistinct chatter]

Oh, I'm so excited
I bumped into you again.

Lionel is my friend
that is a very talented artist.

-What are you doing tomorrow?
-Chillin'. Nothing.

Chillin'. Then call me in the morning...

How about I call you
in the morning when I get up?

I'll put on some painting clothes.
We'll go grab lunch and then we can paint.

[indistinct chatter]

[Melissa] Ah, this is just
overwhelming, all this art.

Oh, my gosh! Look at this
cute baby table is in our house!

-[chuckles] Yeah.
-[Melissa chuckles, gasps]

-I love that.
-[Lionel] Thanks.

[Melissa] I look to Lionel and I think
he is someone to be admired.

-Is this what you're doing for Jazz Fest?
-Mm-hmm.

[Melissa] He's taking time out
of his busy painting schedule

to teach me, and that is really nice.

Let's talk about this.
Let's strike a deal here.

All right. What kind of deal
do you want to strike?

I'll come over for a lesson every...

[clicks tongue] ...Sunday afternoon
at noon. It'll be like therapy.

And you can just let me do my thing
and then laugh when I leave.

-I can't laugh while you're there?
-[laughs]

[upbeat music playing]

-[Craig] James.
-What up?

Wake up. [chuckles] Pillow fight!

[Jamie] Craig is this kid
who I met down on Magazine Street.

He's from, like,
a neighborhood around where we live,

and I thought
that I could really help this kid out.

[Craig chuckles] Get up! [grunts]

I'll be up in five minutes.
Give me five minutes.

Then you can come back in.

-[Craig] And then you want to mud-wrestle?
-Sure.

[upbeat music concludes]

All right, I think we have enough water.

[Jamie] When Julie says,
"I'm making a mud wrestling pit,"

the immediate thing
that popped in my mind was, "Yes!"

In the beach trunks...

[Kelley] Take your pants off,
Julie, I'll tell you when.

-...there is Jamie!
-Whoo!

-[Julie] Whoo!
-The wannabe sexy lady...

-[crowd laughs]
-...Julia!

One, two, three! Let's get the fight on!

-[rock music playing]
-[Julie screams]

[crowd laughs]

[Jamie] It's cool, it's raw, it's primal,
it's mud wrestling at the Belfort.

[Jamie] Oh, yeah! She's getting nasty.

It's almost like animally,
like the way she can look at you.

[Julie] First he's beating me up,
but then I start to come back,

and then he slammed me down on my neck.

I don't know what
I was thinking with that mud pit.

[Jamie] Julie emits this vibe
of, like, sexual energy,

and being a man,
you can't deny the vibe. [chuckles]

Hey, this is getting sexual now.

I can't deny
my sexual attraction to Jamie. I can't.

And it's bittersweet
that I can't have him.

[pants, chuckles]

That night, we end up...

in the s... He, huh...

It's just weird.

[Jamie] We were just sort of,
like, around each other,

and you sort of, like, get close
and then closer and then closer

and then kiss.

[both kissing]

[rock music concludes]

[soft rock music playing]

[birds chirping]

What the hell happened last night?

-Mm...
-[Kelley] Spill it, girlfriend.

I want details. I want, like,
up-to-the-moment, the moment,

-and post-moment, after it happened.
-[laughs]

I was being really flirty.
Like really bad.

I just kissed him, whatever.

[Kelley] My theory on Jamie
having a crush on Julie is,

Jamie is supposedly finding
this newfound spirituality in his life,

and Julie is basically
the epitome of spirituality in our house.

So, he can get that through her.

So let me ask you this question,
and don't lie 'cause I'll know if you are.

-[Julie] What?
-[Kelley] Do you have a crush on him?

-Mm-mm. Mm-mm. Mm-mm.
-[Kelley] Don't lie.

-No, I'm not lying.
-[Kelley] You did. I knew it.

You wanna know how I know?

No, Kelley, I'm not lying.

I like being friends with him
and I like chillin' with him.

He's my homie, you know, but I don't like
kissing up on him because it...

That's just, like, weird then, you know?

First of all,
I'm not going to try and, like,

make this thing with Jamie
at all happen, at all.

I'm not going to try and feed into it.

I'm just going to be
as normal as I've ever been.

Hmm.

I just think he's hot, and that's why
I flirt with him, just 'cause it's funny.

-You know?
-I love this stuff.

-[Julie] Mm-hmm.
-[Kelley] Drama, drama, drama.

-[soft rock music concludes]
-[gentle music playing]

[birds chirping]

Lionel, I just think I'm a natural.

-[laughs]
-[Melissa laughs]

Lionel is teaching me how to paint

and to him it might just be,
"Oh, you know, I'm letting this girl in

on something that
I've been good at all my life."

But for me, it's a quiet way...

to deal with my head,
and I don't feel so scatterbrained

when I'm with him.

What color should I do the background?

-You can do red. You can do...
-[gasps]

Oh, my gosh,
a whole red thing'll be so cool.

See, because I know about this art stuff.

I've been doing this
for, like, four hours.

-You're a pro, huh?
-[Melissa laughs]

[gentle music concludes]

[upbeat music playing]

On your marks.

Jamie and I are just cool.

[Jamie] Get set.

-Whatever.
-[Jamie] Go.

I'm going to dominate you, girl.

[Julie] You've been skateboarding
a little longer than I have.

[grunts]

He can smooch me.

We can have a little smooch fest
and it will be not a big deal.

It's just a good way
to get to know someone.

-What? What are you talking about?
-Last night you go,

"Jamie, do you really think that
we're going to be friends after this?"

-Jamie...
-What?

...you're making me sad right now.
[chuckles]

-No, seriously, though...
-What do you mean?

...promise me, like,
when this is over, we can be friends

'cause I think
it would suck if we weren't.

I came into this thinking
that she was like a naive young girl.

When the reality of things is, like,
completely opposite of what Julie is.

Julie is deep.

[Julie] I like you as much
as I could possibly like a male

without making it all sexual.

-[Jamie] The feeling is mutual.
-Good.

So, you think that these paintings
will really help insanity?

[Melissa] Heck yeah.
'Cause when I paint, man,

I don't think about much else
but making it right.

It really helps.

It's amazing how much
learning how to paint can be therapeutic.

It's less emotionally

invasive as, say, something
like talking to a therapist.

He is cute.

[Matt] She's so much more fun
to be around and more solid.

A little more likable.

I mean, she's just a better person.

I could bang these out
and have a little gallery.

For me, this is, like,
a big, gigantic deal.

I'm stepping far, far outside

of the person that I was
when I first got here.

Lionel is giving me a gift
that's bigger than I think he understands.

Piece number two. Done and done.

[upbeat music concludes]

[funky music playing]

-Look at my self-portrait.
-Wow, that's tight.

[Melissa] These are the ones
that I've finished.

[Lionel] Yeah, I like them all.

[Melissa] You see, these are all things
that I feel about myself sometimes.

Most people can't come right out

and acknowledge their flaws with words.

But with painting, it's, like,
really, really easy for me to say,

"Hey, look, there are things
in my life that I'm fearful of."

-This is tight, know what I mean?
-[squeals]

[Lionel] It's nice designs.
Real nice design.

[Melissa] I'm an artist, Lionel.

My life here has taught me
that I can try new things

and I might possibly be good at them.

Love me some Lionel.

I gotta paint. I gotta paint. [yawns]
I gotta wake up 'cause I gotta paint.

[funky music concludes]

[drums playing]

[Danny] Jazz Fest
is way better than Mardi Gras.

There's a different type
of music at every stage.

So, you can constantly
wander around and listen to music all day.

-It's fun as hell.
-[indistinct chatter]

Sticker man! Sticker man! Can we
have the "I love sex" sticker for her?

-Yeah, girl.
-Then you get this one.

There you go.

[Jamie] I'm with Julie at the Jazz Fest
and we're talking about

existing on this higher level
of consciousness.

[rock music playing]

You're trying so hard
to reach this elevated level

that you're missing it.
Like, you're not realizing

that you're... you're there.

[indistinct chatter]

[Jamie] If you want to see these
higher levels of consciousness

and understanding and clarity,

you could travel to Tibet,
the Himalayas, parts of India,

or you could live with
the horny Mormon at the Belfort house

and you can see it, too.
And I've seen it through her.
