[theme music playing]

-[Wes] This is the true story...
-[Lacey] Yee-haw!

-[Lacey] ...of seven strangers...
-[Rachel] ...picked to live in a house...

[Nehemiah] ...work together
and have their lives taped...

[Johanna] ...to find out what happens...

-[Danny] ...when people stop being polite...
-Shut up.

-[Melinda] ...and start getting real.
-[all laughing]

-The Real World: Austin.
-[music concludes]

[rock music playing]

[crowd chanting] Stop the w*r!

[Lacey] Whose palace is this
that you're in?

S*ddam's.
It's one of his palaces in Baghdad.

[Rachel] I want my roommates to know
what I went through

because it's part of who I am.

I fought for this country,
and it gives you a sense of pride

that you actually added
to this country's well-being.

[Danny] Yeah, what happens
if you got caught

having sex with one of the soldiers?

-I did. [scoffs]
-[Lacey] You got caught?

[laughs]

[Rachel] I have a boyfriend.
His name's Eric.

We've been dating
for nine months. We met in Iraq,

and Eric is currently stationed
at Fort Drum,

and he's still in the army.

My punishment
was to have to guard the roof

for five nights in a row.
So, after my workday was done,

and I worked at the aid station
all day in the hospital,

and then they had me go sit up
on the roof for five hours.

[rock music continues]

[Rachel] We only had water in Iraq,
and we didn't have any kind of juice.

We used to put a whole bunch
of Starburst jellybeans and Skittles

in the bottom of your water bottle,

and it would taste like fruit iced tea,
like at the end, it was really weird.

Think about what people
in jail have to do.

[Melinda] No, whatever.
People in jail have it made.

You're crazy.

-[Melinda] They got the internet.
-I think they get juice.

[Melinda] They got libraries, gyms.

-People in jail have it made?
-Uh-huh.

[Rachel] Being deployed
is a lot worse than going to jail.

-Hell no.
-Do you know what?

I dug a hole and [bleep] in it.

[Melinda laughing]

Do you know how degrading
that is to dig a hole

and poop in it?

I had it up to here
with her braggin' and boastin'

because I'm against w*r.
And for me to sit back

and hear her brag about it all the time,

and I'm gonna react to that

because I have an opinion
just like she does.

-It's...
-You signed up for it.

-Well, jail, they committed a crime.
-Not all of 'em.

Jail, you have your freedom taken away.

I would much rather go to jail
than get deployed to Iraq

-for a year again.
-I bet you, you wouldn't.

[Rachel] It's hard coming from somewhere

where everybody understands
what you've been through

to coming somewhere where people

don't even really know
where you're coming from.

Maybe we should ask someone
who's been to jail and Iraq,

and see who can compare 'em.

[Rachel] It's only one guy
in the house that's acting like that.

He said he'd rather go to jail than get...

Or jail is harder than
getting deployed to Iraq.

I'm like, "No, you're safe.
You're not getting shot at."

[Erik] If you didn't go over there
and fight a w*r,

your roommates
wouldn't be able to have an opinion.

Yeah.

[Erik] You fought
for them to have an opinion.

-[Rachel] Yeah.
-[Erik] But because they're expressing it,

that's wonderful. That's just showing you,
you've helped them earn that privilege.

[Rachel] It's like chiseling away at me.

Pretty soon, I'm gonna freakin'...

say something. I can't take it anymore.

[Danny] So where exactly
are you guys going tonight?

[Melinda] I'm not sure.
I wish you could come out with us.

Go out and have fun.

-Just be very careful for me, okay?
-Mm-hmm.

[Melinda] When I go out
and Danny is still in the house,

I feel like I don't wanna go

and I just wanna
spend all my time with Danny.

But I know
that I still need to get to know

the rest of my roommates,
and that's very important to me.

[chuckles]

[Danny] I think the only thing
that makes me uncomfortable about Mel

and the only thing
that turns me off in a sense is that

I'm used to dating
more conservative girls,

girls that don't dance
on top of the bar when they get drunk.

Surrendered in me
A most unordinary

Shadow of your face...

but it's kind of different.

[soft music playing]

-[Rachel] Did you make out with Melinda?
-[Lacey] She said...

-Yeah.

Okay, first off,
it was absolutely nothing.

It seemed like some drunk,
random party thing to me.

The entire time I was kissing her,
I was thinking, "Danny's back at home."

[Lacey] How long were you kissing her for?

[Wes] It... There was...

there was a good quality of time
that me and her were kissing.

[Lacey] Are you gonna tell Danny
you kissed Melinda?

-[Wes] I don't know.
-If that's your boy, you should.

-Just be honest about it.
-You know what? I probably should,

but if he could see it,
he would understand.

Why was that happening?

Why did that come up in the first place?

That's the only thing that bothers me.

I don't want their little
happy love affair thing to get

squashed in a month,
and then it be awkward and horrible.

[soft music concluding]

[rock music playing]

We gotta leave here in 15 minutes, okay?

[Nehemiah growls]

We're gonna go meet Jenn
and P.J. at the Velvet Spade

and try to put to use all of our training
on the camera and sound.

Are you almost done in
the shower, Danny?

[Danny] No, I'll probably be in here
twenty more minutes.

[Rachel] 'Cause I think
we have to in ten minutes.

[Johanna] Rachel overwhelms me
because she is always

trying to be in control.

-[Rachel] We're leaving in six minutes.
-[Wes] I'm speedy.

Okay, get ready.

People taking so long
to get their asses out of the door

is driving me crazy,

because in the army,
people are very punctual.

"There's five minutes left.
Okay, five minutes left, everybody."

"Get in the door in five minutes."

If we take a cab, we gotta call two cabs
and we gotta wait for them to come here.
