into this great wilderness
for an expedition of their own?

[Bear] I'm heading to pick up Luke Dimyan,

who plays Judas Iscariot
in the hit TV show, The Chosen.

Luke wants to be challenged
to face some fears,

and there's nowhere
like this place to do that.

[suspenseful music continues]

[helicopter blades whirring]

[Luke] I am somewhere
in the wilds of Utah.

There's a lot of… rocks.

It's how I'm kind of navigating my, uh,

my location and where I'm going.

Just looking at the rocks,
giving them names.

That one's Jerry.

I think I've maybe passed Jerry
a few times already.

["Walk on Water" playing]

[Bear] Luke Dimyan
is an actor in The Chosen.

I'm Judas, of Kerioth.

[Bear] As the most successful
crowd-funded series of all time,

this dramatization of the story
of Jesus Christ

has been seen by
hundreds of millions of people

around the world.

["Walk on Water" continues]

I believe you are going
to change the world,

and I want to be a part of that.

[bear] Luke plays Judas Iscariot
who infamously betrayed Jesus,

setting in motion the events
that led to the crucifixion.

Luke has just finished filming
some of his toughest scenes,

and is now ready to take on
his next challenge:

a mission with me through Utah's
treacherous Castle Valley.

[playful music playing]

[Luke] Bear asked me to come out here
and meet him.

Usually, um, when I get weird
invitations to meet someone, uh,

into the open desert,
I don't, uh, normally say yes.

I am doing this with Bear,
mostly 'cause he asked.

Uh, how do you say no to Bear Grylls?
Trick question. You don't.

Hello.

I've never been camping,

I've never been much
of an outdoors person,

but I've always appreciated nature,

so I'm really excited
to take on this challenge

with, uh, Mr… Mr. Bear.

It's technically Mr. Grylls, I guess.
I don't know.

Mr. Bear Grylls, full…

Sir. Was he knighted? He might have been.

[dramatic music playing]

[Bear] I've served with
the British Special Forces,

climbed Everest, and led expeditions

to some of the toughest jungles,
deserts and mountains

on the planet.

As a fan of The Chosen,
I'm now taking its cast members

on missions into the wild.

I hope to uncover who they really are

by pushing them to their absolute limits.

Bear Grylls! Are you out there?

My survival skills? [chuckles]
How to describe them…

Uh, they're none. None. None at all.

Naturally, I'm someone who's very afraid.

I do not like bugs,
specifically scorpions.

Uh-- Oh. [chuckles] Oh, wait.

"Hey, Luke, every adventure takes
a leap of faith. Never give up.

[sighs] Uh, I'm no professional,
but, uh, this looks like a parachute.

It's a parachute. Oh, yeah, okay.

[ominous music playing]

Oh! [echoes]

What am I doing with my life?

[helicopter blades whirring]

I see a chopper.

Oh, my goodness, I just realized
I've never been in a helicopter before.

[dramatic music playing]

[Luke] Ladies and gentlemen,
this is how you make an entrance.

-Hey, Luke.
-Hi.

-How you doing, buddy?
-Good.

-Are you okay?
-I'm doing all right. How are you?

-Feeling all right? Ready?
-Oh, ready as I'll ever be.

[laughs] Well done. You got the parachute.

-I do.
-We're gonna need that.

-I've got another one in there.
-Fantastic.

Whoa!

So, have you ever parachuted before?

No, why?

There's first time for everything.

[dramatic music playing]

[Bear] Mine and Luke's mission has begun.

We have just one day
to get to our extraction point.

First, we must reach the start
of the Canyon Trail

by skydiving onto it from 10,000 feet.

-We've got this, okay?
-Let's go.

You've got it, Luke. You've got it.
Okay, are you ready?

Set. Go!

Whoo-hoo!

[dramatic music playing]

Whoa! [laughing]

Whoo!

Yeah!

Whoa, whoa, whoa!

Yeah! Whoa. Whoo!

Whoa, whoa, whoa! [screams]

He's under canopy.

-Well done, Luke. Okay.
-[Luke] Yeah!

We've got to get him on the ground safely.

Yeah!

Ah.

That is amazing!

I thought I was gonna die.

[triumphant music playing]

-Well done.

Who am I?

Where did… What time is it?

-Proud of you. Well done.
-Thank you.

I'm confused. A lot has happened
in the past few minutes.

Uh, yeah.

Seeing Luke land, uh, is a good feeling,

but really, the journey starts from here.

We've got about four or five miles
through all of these canyons,

big desert cliff spires.

We're dealing with a lot of steep faces.

I just jumped out of a helicopter.
I can handle whatever's out there.

Right?

-We're heading that way.
-All right.

So we've got about four or five miles
through all of these sandstone cliffs.

We want to be heading south,
so we want to kind of

keep the sun basically
a little bit in our face.

-All right.
-Yeah?

Awesome. Let's do it.

[Bear] Today, I'm taking Luke
on the journey of a lifetime

through the beautiful
but unforgiving Moab Desert.

Our journey will take us through a maze

of sharp rock formations and deep canyons.

To navigate this treacherous terrain,

I've preplaced rope crossings
and tactical anchor points.

This should give us a fighting chance

if we're gonna get to
our extraction point before sunset.

Shall we strip down some
of these layers, Luke, do you think?

-Sure.
-It's gonna get hot, isn't it, I think.

Oh, I mean, I don't mind the heat.

I usually have to wear, like,
an extremely thick tunic.

Really? So, are you good in the heat?

Oh, absolutely. You kidding me?

I feel like my ancestors would be
upset at me if I wasn't.

Tell me about your ancestors.
Who were they?

Oh, well, uh, I'm Coptic Egyptian.

-So…
-Coptic Egyptian?

Yeah. Coptic is kind of like
a dead language, like, uh, Latin.

It's the language that
came from the hieroglyphs.

And being Coptic Egyptian,
uh, means I am a descendant

of the Pharaonic Egyptians.

-What's Pharaonic? Pharaohs?
-Pharaohs, yeah.

-That's pretty cool.
-That's those people.

[Bear] So, in Egypt, do you…
do you speak the language?

[Luke] Arabic? Uh, yes.

Coptic, it's hard.

We mostly use it for
religious practices and stuff.

But Arabic, I do speak.

-Very poorly.
-Yeah.

[Luke] Kind of like a three-year-old
speaks Arabic.

I sadly also only know how to speak
in the male conjugation

of verbs and adjectives because
that was what was spoken to me.

-[chuckles] Yeah.
-So I'll say something--

So you're not good at
chatting to girls in Arabic?

Nope!

[Bear] Luke's impressive career
should do the talking for him.

But even that was originally in question
with his loved ones.

Was your dad encouraging when you said,

-"This is what I want to do, be an actor"?
-Oh, no.

Oh, man, he was like, "No, stay safe."

-Stay safe?
-Get a desk job,

find a nice, tiny, depressing cubicle
and stay there.

-Get paid, be safe, all that stuff.
-[chuckling]

And my mom basically agreed with him
because all they knew about acting

was the gossip columns, the tabloids,
the bad things that came with it.

-Scrutiny?
-Yes.

Well, you've already started
breaking rules.

-I did. I mean, they were both…
-Awesome.

When they found out I got onto the show
and was getting paid,

they were both like,
"Okay. Glad we were wrong."

[laughs]

[dramatic music playing]

[Bear] Okay.
So we've got to get across this.

[Luke] Oh, fun.
Wouldn't want to fall off that.

Basically,
our direction of travel is that way.

We've got all of these canyons.

You can see there's a whole series
of them like this.

-[Luke] Uh-huh.
-[Bear] So we can either climb down

and then climb up,

but you're going to end up doing
four times the distance every time,

so I've put in, uh,
an old traveler's line across here.

[suspenseful music playing]

-Yeah, so here we go.
-[laughs]

So I've secured this around that rock,
around that one,

and it's just a line that
search-and-rescue and climbers use,

quick way of getting across canyons.

Okay. So I'm gonna go first.
See how I do it.

Let gravity do the hard work,

and then you'll have to
pull yourself the last bit.

Dig in, core strength.

-Biceps.
-I can do that.

-[Bear] Yes.
-I have some of those sometimes.

[tense music playing]

[Bear] He's jumped out of a chopper,
but this is different.

This is kind of, in a way,
it's a bit more tangible,

it's that fear when you go over the edge.

It's all very kind of still,

and that can be quite scary.

Luckily Luke doesn't worry very much.
We'll be fine.

I worry a lot. I'm constantly worried.

[Bear] That through that. There you go.

Done. And then I know you're good.

Looking at this situation,
there's a few things

that I can list off
that I'm worried about.

Heights, rope weight, pulleys.

Remember,
gravity will take you the first half,

-and then you need to pull the second.
-All right.

-Happy?
-Yeah.

[Bear] Here we go.

[tense music playing]

Oh, there he goes.

-And don't look down.
-Thanks.

[dramatic music playing]

He just… he just looked down. He just
did the thing he told me not to do.

Okay. And then once you're across,
I'll meet you here.

-You'll be good.
-Okay.

[dramatic music playing]

[Luke] Didn't get too far.

-Do I pull the rest?
-[Bear] Yep.

[Luke] Oh.

[dramatic music playing]

[Bear] Well done, keep going,

and then I'll be able to give you
a little bit of assistance.

-[Luke] Oh, thank you.
-[Bear] For the last bit.

-Some Coptic muscles going on there.
-[Luke] I'm doing my best.

-Are you there?
-Yeah.

Keep going. There you go.
You should be able to stand up.

-[Luke sighs]
-Great job.

We fight on.

I thought I was gonna be stuck
there for a second.

But, uh, we did it. We're across.

[pensive music playing]

You know what I see when I look at this?

-Uh, very nice rock formation?
-Shade.

-Also very beneficial.
-Shall we sit in this, have a drink?

-Five minutes, hydrate?
-Yeah.

And then we'll carry on.

Come on.

[Bear] Well, I know you love the heat,

but even in the heat, we've got to keep…
keep resting, keep hydrating.

-Absolutely.
-Get any bits of shade like this we can.

[Luke] Mmm.

I bet a lot of people struggle.
You're filming in the desert all day.

It takes a toll, yeah?

We're filming in a desert all day.

We're in multiple layers of cloth,
out in the sun.

I mean, they must be so hot,
those clothes.

It is extremely hot.

And then on top of that,

some of the biggest scenes, multiple days,

back to back,
same extremely emotional scene

that you have to get through,
and honestly, I think one of my…

the biggest blessings
of this project is this cast.

I, as a relatively, like, younger member,
have learned so much just watching them.

I'm very appreciative
for the cast that we have.

They're like…

And I don't say this lightly,
but it's very much like family.

Yeah. Yeah, I bet you've got
good bonds with them.

You can kind of feel it, really.

[gentle music playing]

[Bear] So, do you think
your Coptic background,

do you think that brings,
like, a different dynamic

to what you try and show, or…

Being so ingrained in that culture,
in that community,

-and being an artist…
-Mmm.

…it was difficult,
'cause you are naturally curious.

You're naturally, uh, looking out
to see what's… what's out there,

what other answers could there be,
when the entire community is like,

"Well, we have our answer,
and we're satisfied with that."

And me personally,
I wasn't completely satisfied

with the answers that are given to me.

I love searching, I love finding more
and not taking everything on face value.

-And challenging things?
-Exactly.

-Yeah.
-I always prefer a challenge.

That's why this character means
so much to me.

I've had so many people tell me,
"Oh, I'd never play him."

-I was like, "Good."
-It's the toughest one in many ways.

Yeah. And that's why I wanted him.

I wanted that challenge.
I wanted to do it because it was hard.

Because I think he deserves that chance,

as a character, to be seen
as something more than just

someone to be reviled
and hated and separated from.

To make him into a caricature baddie
is a cheap, easy route, isn't it?

You know, the reality would be a much,
much more complex dynamic.

And he was so close to Jesus,
by all accounts, you know.

He loved him. He would not have done…

half of the stuff he did
if he didn't love him immensely.

-'Cause he's not thinking about himself.
-Yeah.

He's thinking about
what the Messiah needs to be.

Yeah, it's almost like he
kind of thought he knew better.

But it never really works,
second-guessing Jesus.

-No, no.
-[chuckles]

And that's kind of a poetic tragedy,
that's my favorite part about him.

No matter what version
of the story you see,

he always loses.

He's doomed to fail

for no other reason

than because he wasn't able to accept

-what was out of his control.
-Mmm.

[somber music playing]

Do you get people kind of
blurring the line between acting

and that you really are Judas Iscariot?

Do you get people…
You must get a little bit of that.

I have a lot of people just kind
of coming up to me

and being like, "Oh, we don't like you."

I'm like, "Oh, thanks."
And they leave. I'm like, cool.

-And then they leave?
-Yeah.

Wow.
That's actually a pretty hurtful thing.

In their minds, they're playing.

They're like, "Oh, you're the character.
We're just joshing you around.

-Just ribbing you."
-Yeah. Yeah.

But, uh, ribbing hurts.

What do you say? Like, "Thank you"?

I'm like, thanks. That's the,
like, ten thousandth one today.

I mean, it's easy to be…
it's easy to be the goody. [chuckles]

-Yeah.
-I mean, I respect you. Good for you.

-Thanks. No, I… I…
-Good for you.

I wouldn't have wanted
to play any other part.

'Cause I didn't do it to be easy.

-I didn't do it to be liked.
-Exactly, yeah.

Where does this love
of challenge come from?

I think it comes from
a feeling of not being good enough.

Like, even doing this,

there's a part of me
that feels like I haven't earned it.

So that's why I wanted
to do it to its fullest.

Listen, first of all in life, you know,
first of all, you have earned it.

You've earned it not only in your actions,
but also you're a humble guy.

You know? You're instantly in the 1%

just 'cause you have that gentleness.

I'm so happy you're here,

and I think you've earned
everything good in your life.

and I'm sorry occasionally
you get people being a bit crazy.

Talking of which,
we've got some journey to do.

-Shall we get going?
-All right, let's do it.

We've got, like,
steep edges all the way here.

[Bear] Look.

Oh, that's alive. Oh, oh, oh.

Bear? Bear? [chuckles] What are you doing?

[dramatic music playing]

[Luke] Oh, cool, cool. I'm just gonna…

-[Bear] There we go, look.
-…keep a good distance from it.

Desert hairy scorpion.

-Okay, cool. That's alive.
-Big one.

-Yeah, it's very big.
-That's the dangerous bit.

Yes. I mean, the pincers
are also not great, but…

You know what they normally do, if you
pick it up like that, the danger is?

You think you've got it by the stinger.

And then it turns around,
gets you with the claws

that aren't dangerous.

So you go, "Ah!"
and then you let go of the stinger.

-And it gets you.
-Then it gets you, yeah.

This one wouldn't k*ll you.

Yeah. Oh, that's… nice.

If you've got big claws, that's a clue.

He uses his claws, doesn't need the venom.

When they're little pincers
and a big venom sack, boom.

And the smaller ones can k*ll, you know…
If it's a child, it can k*ll a child.

-Oh, wow.
-So, yeah. But…

I mean, I've eaten a lot of these
over the years.

-Oh, fun.
-Have you seen one of these before?

Nope, this is a first.

I've got some, uh, good tips.

Very similar to, uh, rattlesnakes.

Just bigger pincers, you're okay,
but the smaller pincers,

they need that venom, so don't get stung.

So that's, hey, that's new information.
I learnt something new today.

I've also never been stung before.

When you're filming in the desert,
you take your shoes off,

-make sure you tip your boots out.
-Yeah.

'Cause you don't want
one of these guys down there.

That is terrifying.

-Should we let him go?
-Yes, please.

Let him be free. Let him go home.

[playful music playing]

Normally, you know, in the old days,
that'd just be a snack.

That'd be protein, that would be dinner.

But nowadays, I kind of, I don't know,
getting a little softer, maybe.

Unless I really need to eat it,
I tend to let them go.

[lighthearted music playing]

-Why is he coming towards me?
-He's not. He's going for the shade.

-Oh.
-Heat of the day, look.

Let me make it… make it nicer,
and he'll go under it.

[Luke] Oh, yeah. It's so sweet.

-Yeah, chill out, buddy.
-[Bear laughs]

You take a good rest. We're gonna…

-We're gonna keep going.
-Yeah.

[Bear] Rad might be having a rest,

but we've still got three miles
of tough terrain to cover

before we reach our extraction point.

Yeah, look, we want to go down here, Luke.

-Okay.
-It's a little steeper.

-Maybe we should just use this.
-All right.

I tell you what,
if we just tie it loosely round,

around the tree, maybe double,
and we can just overhand it down.

He just started tying
some rope around a tree.

We'll see how that goes.

[dramatic music playing]

It's fine. It's cool.

Yeah, nice, steady footing.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Luke] Oh. Okay, it's my turn.

[Bear] Take your time on your footing.

[Luke] There we go.

-Ooh.
-[Bear] Job done.

-Awesome.
-And then we'll pull it through, carry on.

Okay.

Off we go.

Maybe just on your backside,
and use your hands as your brakes.

Good friction.

Well done. Beautiful.

[Bear] We've reached
the hottest part of the day,

so thirst is starting to kick in.

But before we can look for a drink,

Luke has spotted something.

-What was that?
-I thought it was a mouse.

It looked small,
and it scurried right under that shade.

-Where?
-Right… Right here.

[Bear] Oh, yeah.

-[Luke] Oh, it's not a mouse at all.
-[Bear] Oh, it's a frog.

[Luke] Is it… Is it poisonous?
Is it venomous?

-You know what that tells us, though?
-What?

It's another sign of water.

So much of survival, I think,
is always taking little clues.

-Mm-hmm.
-So you've got a lot of shade.

-Look at all this shade here.
-Yeah.

You've got a lot of green.

That needs water.
And you've got frogs. They need water.

Okay, let's keep going.
We'll find a low bit and we'll dig.

Let's do it. Wow! Nature!

[Bear] It doesn't take us long
to find something

which might just quench our thirst.

-[Luke] Oh.
-[Bear] Here we go, look. Feel that.

[Luke] Yeah, that's very damp.

-Probably never sees sun under here.
-No.

And also, any moisture coming down,
even if it's under the sand…

-Mm-hmm.
-…is gonna pool in this low bit.

Uh…

You know a good way
of getting the moisture out of that?

-How?
-So, we'll wrap that in something.

-Maybe one of our socks.
-Mm-hmm.

And then you just squeeze it, squeeze it,

and you can actually even suck
through the sock.

-[chuckles]
-You suck the moisture out.

-Look, this will work.
-Sock sucking. Just casual…

-Sock sucking.
-[chuckles]

Well, the thing is,
when there's so little moisture,

you want to take whatever you can get.

-Yeah.
-Okay, here we go.

-Oh, using your sock?
-Do you want to use your sock?

-I don't know.
-Let's both use our own socks.

-I love that. I love that idea.
-[chuckling]

[playful music playing]

[Bear] I've used my socks and underpants

and all sorts of things
for this over the years.

You know, it's a kind of toss-up
which is worse--

sucking wet sand out of your underpants

or sucking wet sand out of your socks
you've been hiking on all day.

I ain't here to get pampered.
I'm surviving in the wild.

-Let's go.
-[Bear] Come on.

[playful music playing]

Okay, so you've got a thing of damp sand.

Look, it's already beginning to pool.
Look.

-Oh, nice.
-You got a little…

Not very much, but drips.
But if you squeeze that and then suck…

[mumbles]

-You can see it's coming out here.
-Yeah.

[slurping]

It's kind of naturally filtered
through the sand anyway.

We're taking it, and it's getting another
filter through all these microfibers.

So actually, sucking out of this,

even though it's a bit gross
with all the sweat…

-[chuckles]
-…it actually works.

I mean, hey, sweat's just flavor.

Let's get this. There you are.

-Oh.
-Suck it. Give it like… [sucking]

[slurping]

[smacks lip]

-Wow. It's actually not that bad. Yeah.
-There you go.

I mean… [chuckles] …it's definitely got…
It's got an edge.

Cheers.

[chuckles] Cheers.

-Sock sucking. With Judas Iscariot.
-[laughs] Sock sucking.

Mmm.

[Luke] Whoo.

Those are very strapping boots.

[sighs]

Oh, he walks really fast.

[spirited music playing]

Wow.

This is probably the part where
the John Williams score comes in, right?

[Bear] We'll have five minutes here.

But one thing we should do is just make
sure we're getting a good direction still.

-'Cause now we're down in the canyons…
-Yeah.

…it gets harder to navigate.

-All we need is this little stick.
-Mm-hmm.

Super simple.
Literally… stick it in the ground.

-[Luke] Mm-hmm.
-Look at where the shadow finishes.

There. Ten, 15 minutes,
that shadow will move.

And that is your east-west line.

-[Luke] Oh.
-So north-south.

Humans would have used this method

for thousands and thousands
and thousands of years

as a way of navigating through the desert.

Oh, that's so smart.

And super simple. I mean--
I mean if you think about it…

Egyptians--
I mean, first of all, I love Egypt.

And actually, Jesus was a refugee
in Egypt.

When he was first, born,
that's where he stayed.

-To stay away from Herod. Absolutely.
-Yeah.

Jesus might not have done this
when he was four.

But his mum and dad definitely
would have worked that out.

-Probably.
-And then when he went into the wilderness

-as a 30-year-old guy…
-Yeah.

…he definitely would've used this,

because it's, like,
just a super simple way

-of working out your direction.
-Do you think he would use this?

Or do you think he just would have known?

I don't know.
You know, everyone's view differs,

but my view is that he was much more human

-than we maybe realize.
-Yeah.

I definitely don't think
he would have been going,

"Oh, which way is east? Tink. I know."

I like your… your take, your theory.

I like the idea that
he would have used this.

Yeah, I definitely don't think
he was using his God powers to go…

"Hey, Dad."

-Yeah.
-"Left?" "Left."

-[imitates robot]
-Yeah. Shadow stick.

-Shadow stick, absolutely.
-[chuckling]

[atmospheric music playing]

Okay. So, we'll let that do its thing,
the sun do its thing,

and then we'll work out our direction.

I bought a little snack for us.

-Oh.
-These are military MREs.

So an MRE is a meal ready to eat.

It's what the military use.

It's a complete meal in a pouch, sealed.

As soon as that gets wet,
it gets super hot.

You put the ready meal next to it,
and it heats up.

So that's the pouch.
There you go. That's the menu.

Oh, shredded beef in barbecue sauce.

Yeah, but obviously it's cold now.

-Can you see this?
-Oh.

-When that gets moisture…
-Mm-hmm.

-…it starts to combust and get super hot.
-Okay.

So we put that in there.

[laughs] We put the shredded beef
and barbecue sauce in there.

-Uh-huh.
-And then we just put some fluids in here.

[playful music playing]

So, you can either…

Well, the problem is
I don't want to waste our water.

I wonder what other fluids
are in our possession. [chuckles]

Bear has these old, uh, army MREs

that you can heat up
with water or any liquid.

Emphasis on the "any liquid."

The thing is, if you pee in this,
it's totally gonna work.

And it's not gonna contaminate
our shredded beef…

No, because it's covered,
so technically it could work.

-Um…
-Want to do the honors?

-Oh, man.
-[chuckling]

Count yourself lucky you're not
drinking it. Just put a little bit in.

True. I was afraid to ask
about that beforehand, but okay.

Off I go.

All right, there's no peeking.

[playful music playing]

-How are you getting on?
-It's fine.

It's good. Solid stream. Nothing…

Nothing to be concerned about.

And to be absolutely clear,
am I actually peeing in this thing?

-Yeah.
-Okay.

-[Bear chuckles]
-Let me…

[Bear] I thought you had stage fright.

All right, all right, here we go!

I-I can take direction pretty well.
It's part of my job.

Um, when it comes to down there,
it's a bit harder to, uh,

perform under pressure.

Unlike "survivaling",

when you make a mistake
at improv, you can just move on.

It's the best… you take it on the chin
and you're like,

okay, so nobody actually liked that scene.
We'll just do better next time.

It's a great way to live life.

Most people are terrified of failure.

I'm one of those people. But…

I don't think I'm in the point
in my life anymore

where I want it to have
a say in what I do.

The thing is,
most people's fear of failure

stops them doing anything,
stops them taking risks.

And it's like, you know, failure's…
failure is a stepping-stone, isn't it?

-You can't get to the good stuff…

…unless you're willing to,
in improv, look a bit crazy or…

Very crazy.

Or in your career,
to fail a bit, you know?

Absolutely.

-Have you filmed the Last Supper?
-We have.

-How was that?

[Luke] It is such a heavy,
uh, historical moment.

Like, everybody knows about
the Last Supper.

And everyone brought their A game.

And it was actually also sad too,

because the Last Supper
was a two-week sh**t.

And I was looking around,
I was talking to everybody, I'm like…

"This is my last day with you guys."

That hit really hard for a lot of people.

Let's try on this one,
having that bother you.

[Luke] I've been with these guys
for almost three years.

We've all gotten to know each other,
like, intimately.

We've basically survived in the heat,

in the cold, blistering storms.

We've been through so much,
kind of like what we've done now.

And the bond we formed
was so strong that it was sad,

but it was also heartwarming, that
no matter what happens with this show,

I've gained, like, 12 brothers for life
who are always gonna have my back.

When you look at the whole journey
you've been on and…

…and seeing the story of Jesus close up…

Mm-hmm.

…I always wonder, what do you think it was

that really drew people to Jesus?

This is just me personally,
but I think it was his acceptance.

He saw people,

and he allowed them to be

-the best versions of themselves.
-Mmm.

I hope more people see that example

and realize that
that's a most definite human trait

of Jesus's,
and hopefully take that on a bit

in their day-to-day lives.

Love someone, unabashedly, fully,

-mistakes and all.
-Mmm.

Give them the chance to be
the best version of themselves.

if you offer it to them, they'll take it.

Where do you draw your strength?

I was very lucky.
My grandfather was a priest,

a Coptic Orthodox priest, um, an icon,

a huge figure in our church
and our community.

He built a church from
the ground up in Alexandria.

He had this presence.

He had this presence of strength
and care and kindness and peace

that I was very lucky
to grow up with in my life.

Whenever I'm stressed,
whenever I'm frustrated,

I just remember that,
and I find that peace.

And your grandfather's
no longer alive now?

No, no. He, uh, passed away

right after my last audition for the show.

He must be… well, he will be…

so proud of you.

[Luke] We talked about it before.

My parents…
not supportive of my career at all.

He always was.

I think if there's one person
I have no doubt

that I ever had to prove myself towards,
it was my grandpa.

He was my number one supporter
from day one.

Mmm.

But my dad always used to say,

And when you get close,
you find a little kind of route.

-Yeah. I used to climb a lot of trees and…

not canyons, but we had a lot of
rock ridges and hills where we lived, so…

Well, you've got a natural climber's…
climber's physique.

I might take up rock climbing if I, uh,
if I find the fancy for it.

through his desk afterwards,

and I found in his diary
a handwritten prayer,
