[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

[CLASSICAL MUSIC]

It's with you, Davenstock.

I'm all in.

[MEN LAUGH]

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

- Are you sure?
- Never more so, Cadogan.

- I'll see you.
- [MEN LAUGH AND CHATTER]

- [MEN EXCLAIMING]
- Pair of aces.

Nine...

- Ten.
- [MEN EXCLAIMING]

Jack.

A run beats a pair.

[LAUGHING]

Same time next week?

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

Wait!

One final wager.

All or nothing.

Our estates in Chelsea.

Similar size, I believe.

One cut of the cards...
winner takes all.

Aces high?

Well, there we are.

You've been very sporting
about this, Henry.

I shall let you keep a few acres

as a memento of the evening.

[CHUCKLES]

I'll have them drawn up on the map.

[DRAMATIC CLASSICAL MUSIC]

[BELL TOLLING]

All in.

I call.

[DEALER] Call.

Two pairs.

A straight.

Straight wins.

Can you advance me 15, old boy?

We agreed a limit.

Well, then let's agree another one.

I'll need a signature.

I'm not signing some piece of paper

while I'm in the middle of the game.

- I'm the Earl of Davenstock!
- Rory, just...

Just don't...

[INDISTINCT MURMURING]

[FREDDIE] Maybe we should
just leave here.

Come on.

Give me the money.

Deal the cards.

[BIRD SCREECHING]

[INDISTINCT MURMURING]

[EXHALES DEEPLY]

- Full house.
- Oh, f...

Come on.

[DEALER] And a flush. Full house wins.

[EXHALES]

How can you do that night after night?

When you run out of money?

And don't you think we should
be slowing down anyway?

Why?

You know why.

What difference does that make to me?

It makes a difference to us!

I don't want to talk
about this right now.

You never do.

For God's sake, Freddie!

Look, it's been a long night
and I'm gonna go to bed.

I'll see you in the flat, yeah?

[SIGHS]

Is that you?

Mmm...

For Christ's sakes,
do we have to keep arguing?

What do you want?

I want the money you owe me.

Well, you can't have it.

What's the matter?

Aren't you good for your debts?

Maybe I should take
the deeds to this church.

Isn't that what Davenstocks do?

Sell off their family heirlooms?

Piss off!

You owe me hundreds
of thousands of pounds.

- [LAUGHS] Put that away.
- [g*n c*ck]

Oh, don't be such a bloody idiot.

I'm warning you.

I should have seen this coming,

borrowing from scum.

You'll get your money.

This is your last chance.

[IN MOCKING ACCENT] "Oh,
this is your last chance..."

[LAUGHING]

[g*nsh*t]

[THEME MUSIC]

[g*nsh*t]

Ooh. Forgive them, Lord.
They know not what they do.

- [INDISTINCT CHATTER]
- [CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS]

Morning, Max.

- Layla.
- Morning.

What have you found, Ashley?

Male, early 40s, k*lled by
a single shot from a handgun.

It's a Baikal IJ-70.

Well, you don't see too many of those.

Mmm.

And who's the victim?

- Erm, Trent Wilsher.
- Of the Wilshers?

There's a second b*llet
lodged in here.

I was tempted to do that
to my alarm clock this morning.

Any others?

It doesn't appear so.

We found two b*llet casings.

And who's the chap outside?

He's called Freddie Rollanson.
He called it in.

Thank you.

Rory and I were with friends.

They were here till pretty late.

- How late?
- About 4:00, I think.

And who's Rory?

The Earl of Davenstock.

He's my partner.

He lives in a flat
at the back of the church.

We both do.

Go on.

Er...

But when everyone had gone,

I came out here
to smoke a cigarette...

I saw Trent Wilsher
going back into the church.

He'd been here earlier,
and then I heard these shots.

How many shots?

Two.

Why did Trent Wilsher go back inside?

There'd been a poker game.

Rory owed him money.

So what did you do
when you heard the g*nshots?

I waited till everything was quiet,

then I went back inside and...

I found Trent Wilsher lying there.

There's a b*llet lodged
in the clock in the church

which suggests that the shots
were fired at 04:27,

but you dialled 999 at 04:36.
Why the delay?

I was scared.

I thought I'd get shot myself.

And as far as you know,

Rory Davenstock was the only
other person in the church

when the sh**ting took place?

- Yes.
- [MAX] So where is he now?

I have no idea.

He must have left
through the side door.

I've been trying
to get in contact with him,

but his phone's not responding.

The victim is Trent Wilsher,
older brother of Carl Wilsher.

Emergency services
were called at 04:36

by Rory Davenstock's partner,

Freddie Rollanson, who claims he was

outside the church
and heard two g*nshots.

According to him, Rory Davenstock,

whose family own the church,

was inside when the sh**ting
happened and is now missing.

I want to know
who went into that church

and what time they came out again.

I've put out a request
for CCTV footage

from the church
and the surrounding area.

Great.

Now, Jess, I think we've all
heard of the Wilshers.

Is there anything particular
we might need to know?

Oh, they moved to England

There's not much they're not
involved in... drugs,

ill*gal gambling, extortion.

But they've never been
convicted of anything.

Trent Wilsher was married
to Abby Wilsher,

who you'll find all over Instagram,

and who has her own line of cosmetics.

Just Abby.

Now, the Wilshers'
big thing is money lending.

They don't operate like
your average building society.

My dad knew the Wilshers
back in Dublin

when he was in the Garda.

Carl Wilsher was tried for the m*rder

of an Albanian drug smuggler.

He got off, but there was a rumour

he was only taking the rap
for his older brother.

They have a reputation for not
cooperating with the police.

You can expect a bumpy ride with them.

Well, they'll want their money.
And they'll want revenge.

As far as the Davenstocks
are concerned,

I've been on Debrett's Peerage
and Baronetage...

Tage, tag...

- Is that how you say it?
- Sure.

Yeah. The family used
to own half of Chelsea.

But the first Earl of Davenstock

gambled it away
back in the 18th century.

Rory is the 13th Earl.

Describes himself as a "bon vivant".

His mother, Allegra,
lives near to the church

with his sister, Sylvestra.

And his brother, Andrew,
runs Davenstock's Bank.

So, our priority is to find
Rory Davenstock.

Let's talk to family,
anyone who knows him.

Someone might be helping him to hide.

The longer it goes on,

the harder he's gonna be to find.

Uniform broke the news
to Abby Wilsher.

Why don't you two go
and see what she has to say?

[JESS] I used to have an aunt
who lived in Chislehurst.

We all thought
she was very lah-di-dah.

[LAYLA] We're very sorry
for your loss, Mrs Wilsher.

I can't believe this has happened.

It was all kicking off last night.

Rory Davenstock, he'd been drinking,

but how could he do this?

We haven't arrested
or charged anyone yet.

It was him, though, wasn't it?

He's a person of interest.

Were you aware that Mr Davenstock

was running up debts
with your husband?

Trent lent lots of people money.
He was very generous like that.

I didn't get involved
in the business, no.

You're best off speaking
to his brother Carl.

- Was Carl there last night?
- Yeah.

Yeah. I left with him.

- He gave me a lift home.
- What time was this?

Maybe 4:00. Zak drove us.

Did you try to call Trent?

No, I knew he was busy.

[LAYLA] Weren't you worried about him?

We've examined his phone

and there were no incoming calls.

He didn't like to be
disturbed when he worked.

We've only been married a year.

I don't know what I'm gonna do
without my Trent. He made me...

He made me feel safe.

Where did you first meet,
if you don't mind me asking?

[SCOFFS]

Why does that matter?

Well, it's just one of our inquiries.

In hospitality.

If you must know.

Here you are.
I've got you some samples

from the Just Abby makeup range.

You could hand them out
to your colleagues if you like.

That's very kind, but we're not
allowed to accept gifts.

- Are you sure?
- Police regulations.

[SINISTER MUSIC]

Oh, Carl.

You're all right?

- It's gonna be all right.
- Carl Wilsher, I'm DS Walsh,

and this is DC Lombard
from Chelsea CID.

We need to ask you some questions

about what happened last night.

- Not now.
- It's important that we speak...

I said, not now.

I'll come to the station later,
with my lawyer.

In the meantime, I'm gonna console

my brother's grieving widow,
and you can do your job,

which is to find Rory Davenstock.

Come on.

Well, they seemed close.

I noticed. Is that how you greet
your brother-in-law?

Layla, I've met her before.

She was probably about 19 at the time.

It was part of an investigation
into lap dancing clubs.

She was one of the dancers.

The Wilshers had just started
muscling in on the club scene.

She married the boss?

Looks like it.

[MOBILE RINGING]

Max.

Er, yeah, sure.
We'll head straight there.

Er, no, the traffic
shouldn't be too bad.

OK. Bye.

He thinks that Chislehurst
is halfway to Brighton.

That's what happens when you cycle

around Chelsea your whole life.

These detectives
are looking for Rory, Mummy.

It's about something
that happened in the church.

What happened?

Somebody died.

Was it a burglar?

I don't think so.

They're wondering
if we know where Rory is.

What's he supposed to have done?

A man was shot dead

in St Edward's Church
last night, Lady Davenstock.

Your son was there,

and we need to question him urgently.

Well, if he's done something
bad, he'll have to pay.

He's always been headstrong, Rory.

Is he still friendly
with that young man?

Do you mean Freddie Rollanson, Mummy?

They're in a relationship.

I wouldn't be surprised if
he isn't at the bottom of this.

I know his type...
spongers, parasites.

I don't know why you're asking me.

My son's in his mid-40s,
you know. He isn't a child.

You'd be better off
asking my daughter.

They've always been thick
with each other.

Have you heard from Rory,
Miss Davenstock?

Not at all.

We were here all evening,
weren't we, Mummy?

We played Scrabble, didn't we?

Did we?

You'll have to excuse her.

She gets confused,
especially later in the day.

Do you live
with your mother full-time?

Yes. It's just the two of us.
I'm unmarried, you see,

and she needs me.

You mentioned Freddie Rollanson.

- So you know him?
- Not well.

Rory lives his own life these days.

Were you aware he was gambling
in St Edward's last night?

That's most nights, sadly.

Well, if you hear from him,

please get in touch
with us immediately.

Of course.

Why do you say that
about Rory's friend?

Because it's true.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

Good morning.

Follow me.

My brother and I, we move
in very different circles.

When Rory inherited the title
after my father died,

he moved into St Edward's and...

...turned it into
some sort of nightclub.

Goodness knows what our ancestors

would have thought of that.

Rory's the eldest.

Well, technically, that's my sister.

She and Rory are twins.

She popped out 10 minutes earlier,

but... he's the Earl.

Remind us how that works.

It's primogeniture.

The title passes down the male line.

Tough on Syli, but there it is.

- Syli?
- Sylvestra.

We... We call her Syli.

Has your brother ever been
involved with the family bank?

Other than to take money out,
not at all.

Well, the bank is owned
by the three of us.

But believe me, we keep Rory away

from the day-to-day running of it.

Mr Davenstock, are you aware
that your brother has been

borrowing money privately
to finance his gambling debts?

Well, gambling is the family vice.

If he's the head of the family
that owns the bank,

why would he need
to borrow from loan sharks?

You'll have to ask him that.

He's got a line of credit here
if he chooses to use it.

I'm sure you're also aware
that to hide somebody

who is wanted for questioning

in relation to a crime
is a crime in itself.

Is that right?

So just ask again.

Have you any idea where he might be?

He might be my brother,
but I am not his keeper.

There's a camera that picks up

Freddie Rollanson sitting on a bench

in the Square, which doesn't cover

the church's main entrance.

Here he is, smoking a cigarette.

Then he stands up, he's on his phone,

and he walks out of shot. Now...

[g*nsh*t ON VIDEO]

There's the first g*nsh*t.

Wait for it.

[g*nsh*t ON VIDEO]

And then the second.

The time code is 04:27,
which matches the time

on the broken clock.

We're chasing footage
for the camera that covers

the church's main entrance,

where Freddie said he was
before he went in.

As for the side door
that Rollanson said

Davenstock left by,

Sod's law... it's a blind spot.

So we've only got Rollanson's
word that he didn't

go into the church
until after the sh**ting?

Exactly.

Anything on Davenstock's phone?

The last signal was inside the church

just after the m*rder,

but it seems to have been
switched off ever since.

The b*llet entered here,

clipping the left pulmonary artery

which would have caused instant
exsanguination, blood loss.

A round from a Baikal IJ-70

creates a narrow, deep wound channel.

It tore through the sternum
and the intercostal muscles.

There's an exit wound on his back.

Er, would he have died instantly?

Mmm... Well, I... I don't think so.

Oh.

Do these blood smears indicate

that he managed to crawl
a few feet before he died?

Yeah, he would have entered
hypovolemic shock

and lost consciousness
very quickly after that.

And the proximity of the shot?

Well, the blood pattern analysis
on Trent Wilsher's clothing

should determine who was where
when he was k*lled.

Although looking at the angle

and the velocity of the b*llet alone,

he appears to have been shot
from about 10 feet away.

What about the g*n itself?

It's of Eastern European origin
and quite rare in the UK.

The serial number's been filed down,

- so it won't be easy to trace.
- Fingerprints?

Afraid not.

So it's, erm, all about
the missing Earl.

Yeah, that's certainly a main focus.

I've been looking
into the Davenstocks.

The earldom was created in 1740s,

but the lineage goes all the way
back to the Norman Conquest.

One of the Davenstocks
was ex*cuted by Henry VIII.

I'd never have thought you'd be
into all that aristocratic sh*t.

I've got a subscription
to ancestry.com.

[SNIFFING]

Mmm.

[MOBILE RINGS]

How are you doing?

I've been thinking about the Wilshers.

Mmm-hmm.

Now that Trent is dead,

we're assuming that Carl

becomes head of the family, right?

Yeah, that would make sense.

There was always a lot of rivalry

between the two brothers
back in Ireland.

What I'm wondering is,
is there any way that Carl

could have framed Rory Davenstock

for Trent's m*rder?

Well...

We can't place Carl
in St Edward's Church

- at the time of the m*rder.
- Not at the moment, no.

Abby said that they left it
at around 0400.

Obviously, we need
to corroborate that.

Yeah. OK, let's assume
Carl k*lled his brother.

Why would Rory Davenstock
go on the run?

If he witnessed it,
he'd be in fear of his life.

- What's that?
- Avocado salad.

You got a problem with that?

- No.
- Have you eaten?

Well...

There's a funny smell on the boat.

It's rather put me off my food.

Good morning.

Got you a bacon roll.

Ooh.

- Naughty...
- Just think of it as fuel.

I won't tell Helen if you don't.

[BEEPS]

Look at this.

I'm on Davenstock's iCloud account.

His phone's just been activated.

Let's go.

[MOBILE RINGING]

- Connor.
- We've got a trace

of Davenstock's phone.

He's at Chelsea Embankment Gardens.

Great. I'll meet you there.

Keep your jacket on.

We're on the move.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

Anything?

- He's in there.
- Layla, Jess, top entrance.

- Connor, come with me.
- Yup.

Police! Keep your hands
where I can see them.

[FREDDIE BREATHING HEAVILY]

So, Mr Rollanson,

why did you have
Rory Davenstock's phone?

He left it behind.

I found it
when I discovered the body. I...

[SNIFFLES]

I thought it might contain
the numbers for dealers and...

...the stuff
that could incriminate him.

So, having apparently just shot
a man dead, you were worried

he was going to get into trouble
for buying drugs?

I wasn't thinking straight.

And it's been
in your possession ever since?

Yes.

We call that concealing
vital evidence.

Why did you turn it on again?

Why now?

I don't know.

I'm trying to find Rory.

I thought it might give me
a clue as to where he is.

- A... a message or something.
- [JESS] And did you?

No. I don't even know his passcode.

I thought it might be
his birthday, but it wasn't.

I don't know where he is.

You have to believe me.

On the CCTV footage
we recovered from the Square,

you made a call on your own phone?

No, I didn't.

Let me show you.

I was just picking up messages.

- [MAX] From whom?
- Friends.

Our technical team will confirm that

one way or another.

How do we know you didn't sh**t
Trent Wilsher yourself?

Why would I sh**t Trent Wilsher?

To get him off Rory's back.

This is mad.

I need a solicitor.

- We can get you a solicitor.
- [FREDDIE CRIES]

But I didn't do it.

I wasn't there.

Rory and I love each other.

His family hate
the fact that he's g*y.

Davenstocks can't be g*y.
They have to keep breeding.

And then I come along.

And you imagine...

...I'm literally
their worst nightmare.

Well, what would you charge him with?

Obstruction, perverting
the course of justice.

- Is that it?
- I've got six.

[CONNOR] Max, just had an ANPR

from Chelsea Bridge
showing Abby and Carl Wilsher

with their driver heading south
on the night of the m*rder.

- Chislehurst.
- What time was this?

The timecode was 5:02,

but that's more than half
an hour after the m*rder.

So Abby Wilsher lied to us.

Now, you're back.

We have a few more questions,
Mrs Wilsher.

Have you found him yet?
The man that k*lled my husband.

We'll let you know
as soon as we've got any news.

Abby, when we met before,
you said that Zak drove you

and Carl Wilsher back to Chislehurst

together at around 4:00 am.

Yeah, that's right.

We have video evidence of Carl's car

on Chelsea Bridge at 5:02 am,

an hour later than that.

Could you explain
how that's consistent

with what you told us?

I was confused.

I was in the early stages of grief.

So, what were you doing between

leaving St Edward's Church
and driving home?

We were waiting for Trent.

[LAYLA] Did you know he'd gone
back into the church?

I knew he was angry
with Rory Davenstock.

Trent didn't like it
when people were rude to him.

How long were you waiting?

I can't remember.

[SIGHS]

We wanted to see what was going on.

When we got to the church,
we saw the police cars arriving.

We didn't know what had happened.

Did you know Trent had a g*n with him?

- No.
- Weren't you worried about him?

Surely your priority was to find him

rather than driving home
with your brother-in-law?

Of course I was worried.
I was worried sick.

But Carl wanted to go home.

I was confused.

I wasn't lying.

[WHIRRING]

Then she must have known
we'd find out.

I'm pretty sure she's forced to say

whatever Carl Wilsher tells her to.

And the driver
confirmed what she said.

Well, the driver is
on the Wilshers' payroll.

[SCOFFS]

Max, that footage from outside

the church's main door
has just landed.

Freddie Rollanson
was telling the truth.

He was still outside
when the shots were fired.

Show us.

[g*nsh*t]

[g*nsh*t]

We have to let him go.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean
he isn't part of a conspiracy.

Where are we with Carl Wilsher?

Er, his solicitor's stalling.

His client's got a busy schedule.

He'd rather we went through him,
et cetera, et cetera.

We can't arrest him.
We haven't got any evidence yet.

[LAYLA] Even if we did arrest him,

it's not gonna help us
find Rory Davenstock.

Mmm.

Max, I know you don't like
this sort of thing,

but I'm beginning to think
we need to raise

the profile of the case.

[MAX] Mmm.

How about a public appeal?

We'll just get a flood
of false sightings.

But we only need
one of them to be right.

I agree.

I am absolutely not going
to hold a public appeal.

[REPORTERS CHATTERING]

[REPORTER] Any comment at all?

No comment? No?

I'm sorry.

We've written a few notes
for your mother,

but it's important that
she says it in her own words.

Well, let's explain it to her.

Mummy, the detective needs a word.

I don't understand
why I'm waiting here.

Can't we get on with it?

Er, Lady Davenstock,
this is an outline

of what we'd like you to say.

Where are my reading glasses?
Do we have them?

Oh, I've got them.

But those are the wrong ones.

We're all ready.

Have I got time to go to the bathroom?

Er, yeah.

Erm...

Please bear in mind
that Rory Davenstock

may have changed his appearance.

If you see him,
please do not approach him.

We would appeal to anyone
who has information

relating to the m*rder
to contact us immediately.

I am now going to ask his mother,

Allegra Davenstock,
to say a few words.

Rory, darling,
the police need to speak to you.

They want to know
what happened in St Edward's.

It's very important
that you get in touch.

You've always been a naughty boy.

And it sounds as though you may
have gone too far this time.

So be a good boy and hand yourself in.

[FAINT LAUGHTER]

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

[APPLAUSE]

You were always a naughty boy.

It was fine.

No-one will remember a word I said.

Well, the online reaction's been good.

We're gonna get swamped.

There's somebody who's convinced

they saw him at Victoria Station.

Someone else who thinks they saw him

at the Chelsea game last night.

Another person saw him booking
into a hotel in Bayswater.

[PHONE RINGS]

DI Arnold.

I'm on my way.

Madeline.

Olivia, are you all right?

- I'm fine.
- Has something happened?

That's why I'm here.

Look, I've only got five minutes.

I saw your press conference.
You really ought to brush

your hair if you're going
to do these things.

Four minutes.

Allegra Davenstock. Lady Davenstock.

We go way back.

We used to go to the same parties,

although she wasn't
quite so posh then.

Do you know where she came from?

- Swindon.
- Swindon?

Well, a small estate just outside.

No more than a couple
of hundred acres.

Well, I thought

if I bumped into her by chance,
she might tell me something

that she hasn't told the police.

- What do you think?
- Olivia...

...I'm going to spell this out
really clearly.

No. No. No.

My aunt wants to join the team

- as an amateur sleuth.
- I love your aunt.

You love her because you see her
in very small doses.

How is she?

Well, despite her recent mugging,

she's pretty irrepressible.

She certainly seems keen
to get out of the house.

Er, surely that's a good thing?

No, it unleashes her
onto the streets of Chelsea.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

Good afternoon.

Andrew Davenstock. I understand
you might be interested in...

Ah. Er, do I know you?

I'm Carl Wilsher.

Of course.

I was so sorry to hear about you...

I'm not here for your sympathy.

I'm here cos
your family owes my family

a lot of money.

Are you talking about
my brother, Rory?

Yes, I'm afraid Davenstock's Bank

isn't responsible
for his private debts.

If you're, erm...
If you're trying to find Rory,

you'd be better off
talking to his friend,

Freddie Rollanson.

I daresay he can help you.

Get out.

Get out or I will call the police.

No, you won't.

I'll let you know the amount

and you'll pay it.

[SIREN CHIRPS]

[LAUGHTER]

What are you two laughing at?

Nothing.

[LAUGHING]

What?

Max, you're a meme.

This man threatened me, Mummy.

- In my office!
- Who was he?

He was one of the Wilshers.
He said his name was Carl.

You'd better go and talk
to those detectives.

There's nothing we can do.

Did Rory actually k*ll
this frightful man?

Well, the police seem to think so.

Well, let's hope they're wrong.

This won't be good for business.

Davenstocks needs to project
an air of solid

respectability at all times.

That's your forte, isn't it?

I'm surprised Rory managed
to sh**t in the right direction.

He was always hopeless.

You're all as bad as each other.

No, we're not!

I didn't sh**t a man
dead in a drunken rage.

Honestly, I came round thinking
I might get some sympathy.

It's always been
in short supply in this family!

My eldest son
has been accused of m*rder.

What sympathy am I getting?

Do you have to be so hard on Andrew?

You're no better.

You never stopped complaining
about your childhood,

that the boys got all the attention.

Well, they did!

You had a splendid childhood.

All those skiing holidays.

I am going for a walk.

Don't you want me to come with you?

I do not need mollycoddling.

I just want some fresh air.

Oh, for God's sake, answer your phone.

Allegra Davenstock!

Well, well, well.
It's been such a long time.

Olivia Arnold, Livy.

It would be so nice
to have a catch-up.

So this is Davenstock Square.

It's absolutely lovely here.

Do you know I've never
even seen it before?

It's not generally open to the public.

You live in Chelsea, do you?

Oh, yes. Oh, I have done all my life.

Actually, it's quite extraordinary

we've never bumped
into each other before now.

Do you remember those parties
we used to go to?

What fun they were.

If you say so.

You're lucky that
you don't have children.

Mine are a constant source
of heartache.

One of my boys is in trouble

over this nonsense at the church.

Yes, I did read about that.

The police have been round,
asking all sorts of questions.

Oh... they're so annoying,
aren't they?

It was easier when their father
was still alive.

Now I have to deal
with everything on my own.

They squabble with each other
all the time.

They simply don't know
how lucky they are.

I have a nephew,
I know just what you mean.

- He's very spoiled.
- Hmm.

My eldest son, he's in
a relationship with this man.

Oh, dear.

I'm so sorry.

I know we all have to adapt.

And young people
see things differently, but...

Really, it's just too much.

Absolutely.

You're not a journalist, are you?

Good Lord, no!

I'm just a sympathetic friend.

[WHISTLES]

Where's your boyfriend?

- What do you mean?
- Where is he?

I've no idea. I haven't seen him.

He k*lled my brother.

Listen, if I could help, I would,

but I don't know where he is.

I don't believe you.

No, no. Please, please.

[DOOR OPENS]

[DOOR CLOSES]

Where have you been?

You've been gone all day.

We were busy.

Doing what?

Never mind what.

Trying to get back
the money we're owed.

Can I have a word with you?

In private.

[EXHALES]

I feel so vulnerable.

I'm all alone now.

You're not alone.

You'll look after me, won't you?

You haven't been drinking
those all afternoon, have you?

I've only had a couple.

Oh!

Oh! Oh!

[RINGING]

Er, sorry, I, erm...

I just need a minute.

[SNIFFS]

Back with you.

[CONNOR] Freddie Rollanson.

He's been beaten up pretty badly.

He was found unconscious
near the Thames path.

Where is he now?

[JESS] Chelsea Central.

We won't be able to talk to him
until the morning.

Is this Carl Wilsher?

- It sounds like it.
- He's probably thinking

that if he intimidates Freddie,

he'll lead him to Rory Davenstock.

We can't let Carl
get to Rory before we do.

[KNOCK AT DOOR]

Er... I'm coming!

So I've got to go.
I'll call you straight back.

- Oh, it's you.
- Well, who else would it be?

Oh, Max, what is that smell?

It's a mystery.

- Was I expecting you?
- Possibly not.

But you'll be glad when you hear
what I've got to tell you.

I... bumped into Allegra
outside Davenstock Square.

You don't even live
in that part of Chelsea.

Well, I've gone for a walk

and I wanted to increase
my step count.

Go on.

Let me see if I've got this right.

Rory Davenstock is planning

to marry his lover and start a family.

But an adopted son
can't become the Earl.

It has to be a natural Davenstock.

Rory has taken so many drugs
over the years that, apparently,

he now only shoots blanks.

Now, I'm no detective,

but I wondered if this might
have a bearing on the case.

- You're right, Olivia.
- Thank you.

You're no detective.

And I asked you
specifically not to interfere.

We were just having a friendly chat.

I asked you not to interfere
because any defence barrister

who discovered that
a senior detective's aunt

had entrapped his witness
in a m*rder investigation

would ask the judge to throw out
the case and may well succeed.

I'll get my coat.

[MAX SIGHS]

[PIANO PLAYING]

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

[JESS] I've spoken to the
Davenstocks' solicitors, Max.

There's an important detail
about the terms of succession

that were established back in the day.

If the Earl is sent to prison
for what they call

a heinous crime,
he forfeits the title.

So if that happened,
who would inherit it?

Andrew Davenstock.

And there's more. The two brothers

are at loggerheads over
the terms of succession.

Rory's trying to change them,
but Andrew's opposing it.

Why would he want to do that?

Maybe Rory thinks
all this primogeniture stuff

is outdated nonsense

whereas Andrew prefers the status quo.

It's easy to imagine
that he might well

want to become the Earl himself

and pass the title down
to his own children.

[MAX] Ah.

The aggrieved younger brother.

So, if Rory Davenstock
were convicted of m*rder,

Andrew is a direct beneficiary,
and his family, too.

All right,

let's speak to him again.

[CONNOR] How you feeling, Freddie?

I'm alive.

- Who did this to you?
- I don't know.

I didn't see them.

Come on, Freddie.
It was broad daylight.

Everyone's after me, aren't they?

Davenstocks hate me.

Rory's mother won't even
look me in the eye.

Are you seriously telling me

that one of the Davenstocks did this?

It sounds a lot more
like the Wilshers.

I'm not testifying in court.

You're the victim
of a serious as*ault.

All you need to do is give me a name

and then we can make an arrest.

Please.

I don't want to get involved.

I just need a name, Freddie.

[MOBILE RINGING]

Connor.

Freddie identified Carl Wilsher.
We're good to arrest him.

OK, I'll come with you.

Great.

Will you pick me up
from outside the hospital?

Yeah, 10 minutes.

I assumed you were getting in touch

to update me on the progress
that you're making.

We're exploring
various lines of inquiry.

[CHUCKLES] The Davenstocks
are one of Chelsea's oldest

and most distinguished families.

We have a right to know
how you're getting on.

With respect,
you have exactly the same rights

as any other family
in a similar situation.

We're not living in the 18th century.

Yes, more's the pity.

It was a joke.

As we understand it,
if your brother goes to prison,

you become the Earl yourself.

What are you talking about?

The terms of succession.

Any Earl of Davenstock
convicted of a heinous crime

- forfeits the title.
- [LAUGHS]

Now you're living in the 18th century.

Is it true your brother
wants to change the terms?

- Does he?
- Well, he wants to enable

any children he might have
with Freddie Rollanson

to inherit, whether they are
biological Davenstocks or not.

The terms of succession
can't be changed

without the unanimous agreement
of all living family members.

They've stood for the last 200 years.

There've always been bad Davenstocks

and good ones
that keep the show on the road.

We had to cut Rory off
before he bankrupted us all.

When we interviewed you before,

you said, "He's got
a line of credit here

- "if he chooses to use it."
- Oh, did I?

Why would you have said that
if it wasn't true?

What business was it of yours?

Remind me where you were

the night Trent Wilsher was k*lled.

I was... I was at home with my wife.

Ask her.

What on earth are you implying?

That I somehow arranged
Trent Wilsher's m*rder

so that my brother would go to prison

and I'd inherit the title?

[SCOFFS] For God's sake,
this is lunacy!

Mr Davenstock, please calm down.

I am calm.

Now, if you do eventually charge Rory,

I would appreciate knowing in advance

so that I can prepare
my elderly mother

for this devastating news.

Your mother seems well looked after

by your sister.

Yes, well, that cuts both ways.

There he is.

[TYRES SCREECHING]

[LAYLA] OK, call it in.

This is DS Walsh and DC Pollock

in Malmains Way,
Chislehurst, in pursuit

of a dark green Range Rover,
Bravo One Gold Alpha Foxtrot.

Heading west towards Foxgrove Avenue.

All units in the area,
name of driver, Carl Wilsher.

[SIREN WAILING]

- [HORN HONKING]
- sh*t!

- Move!
- Come on!

Go, go, go!

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

That's it.

Are you in a hurry, Carl?

I'd hate to see you
getting a speeding ticket.

[KNOCK ON DOOR]

What are you doing here?

- I was hoping to see Syli.
- Syli is out.

She's at the doctor's.

I can wait.

Have you heard anything?

From the police?

The family are being
kept in the picture.

Has Rory been in touch with you?

[DOOR OPENS]

[DOOR CLOSES]

Freddie.

What happened to you?

It was the Wilshers.

They think I'm hiding Rory.

How about you?

The doctor says
I need to avoid stress.

We're all under stress, dear.

What would your father
have made of all of this?

Daddy loved Rory.

Certainly preferred him to Andrew.

Parents aren't supposed
to have favourites, Mummy.

Not this again.

You know better. You always did.

Your father and I did everything

we possibly could have as parents.

And this is how you repay us,
all of you.

Did you hurt your hand there, Carl?

I was in the shed
trying to fix something.

Oh. You do your own handiwork, do you?

[CHUCKLES]

Yesterday, this man was attacked

in broad daylight
in the heart of Chelsea.

It's a dodgy neighbourhood.

People think it's full of rich folk,

but you'd be surprised.

He's identified you as his attacker.

Has he now?

I was in Chislehurst all yesterday.

My sister-in-law will back that up.

The same sister-in-law who told us

you left the church at 4:00 am

when, in fact, you left at 5:00.

Listen...

...my brother was m*rder*d
two days ago.

My... brother.

And what have you done? Have you
arrested the fella who did it,

this Earl?

No, you haven't.

You're harassing me,

and you've been harassing his widow.

I hear you've been
a great comfort to her

since Trent died, Carl. That's nice.

[CONNOR] The latest sightings
of the Earl

include a woman
who thought she saw him

at the airport in Buenos Aires.

Someone else at the
Penguin Beach at London Zoo.

Hey, I'll check that one out.
I love penguins.

Er, where are you off to?

Just popping out for some lunch.

Do you want anything?

I'm sorted.

I was thinking maybe...
a double cheeseburger

with some fries.

Maybe some hash browns on the side.

- You're lying.
- Mmm.

[LIPS SMACKING]

Sticky-toffee pudding to follow.

You're still lying.

Hi, guys. Gettin' some lunch.

- You want anything?
- That's all right.

Are you a police officer?

Er, yes. How can I help?

I'm the Earl of Davenstock...

...and I shot Trent Wilsher.

We argued. I borrowed
a small amount early.

You know, 15 or something,
it was no big deal.

I just told him to add it to the rest.

How much do you owe the Wilshers?

I have no idea.

Trent pulled a g*n on me.

I said, don't be silly
or something like that. I, I...

I lunged at him
and he shot. It missed.

Then after that,
I don't know how it happened.

I got hold of the g*n and it went off.

I didn't mean to k*ll him.

Obviously, we were both
just trying to grab the g*n.

So the two of you were
up close together.

We were.

[LAYLA] Forensics show
that the fatal shot was

fired from roughly 10 feet away.

Yeah, that's right.

Once I'd got the g*n,
he pushed me rather forcefully.

I was staggering backwards
when it went off,

so 10 feet sounds about right.

You didn't sh**t deliberately.

I'm not used to handguns.
The trigger was very sensitive.

We didn't find
your fingerprints on the g*n.

I wiped it clean.

Have you changed your clothes
since this happened?

How could I? No.

Good. We'll send them to forensics

to check for g*nsh*t residue.

Be my guest.

Perhaps you can drop them off
at my dry cleaners

in Sloane Street afterwards.

[MAX] So, having accidentally
shot Trent Wilsher,

anyone else would have
called an ambulance,

notified the police, but you didn't.

Well, I could see how it might look,

so I decided to lie doggo for a while.

Why didn't you ask
Freddie Rollanson for help?

He was just outside the church.

Well, I didn't wanna get Freddie
mixed up in any of this.

- It's not his fault.
- We found him with your phone.

Did you give it to him to keep safe?

No, Freddie's got nothing
to do with this.

I... I read about him being attacked.

Is he OK?

[MAX] Why did you
give yourself up now?

Is Freddie OK?

[LAYLA] He's all right. It's not
Freddie we're talking about.

Why have you given yourself up now?

[SIGHS]

Well, what else was I gonna do?

Stay on the run?

Hide in people's attics?

Look, I realise that none of
this looks good for me, but...

...I decided that I should
do the decent thing.

It was him or me, self-defence.

And is the jury really going
to convict someone like me

who managed to fight off a thug
like Trent Wilsher?

He did turn up with a g*n after all.

Some might think
that he had it coming.

[MOBILE RINGS]

- Hey, you.
- Hey, Max!

You're famous!

- Am I?
- You're all over the Internet.

- Oh.
- You look very handsome,

- I thought.
- My aunt said

I should have brushed my hair.

[LAUGHS] I wanted to check.

Are we seeing each other this evening?

Y-Yes. I'm really
looking forward to it.

OK, I'll see you later.

Great.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

We just had a sighting
of Rory Davenstock

getting onto
a fishing boat in Hastings.

Could have sworn he was sitting
in a cell downstairs.

Morning, everyone. Caffeine boost.

I hate to tell you this, Max,
it's already out there

on social media
that we've made an arrest.

It's like they knew before we do.

And the CPS have been in touch.

They're worried that if Rory
withdraws his confession,

we don't have the forensics
to convict him.

Freddie Rollanson changed his mind.

- What?
- He didn't get a clear enough

look at Carl to identify him in court.

Also, the tech team have been
looking through Freddie's phone.

He's one of these people
that deletes everything.

Recent calls, chats, messages.

We'll be able
to recover the information,

but it will take a while.

What about Andrew Davenstock,
is he still a suspect?

And what about Carl Wilsher?

- Are we pressing pause on him?
- One at a time.

- [PHONE RINGS]
- Yes.

Er, s-sorry.

Yeah, we're... we're on our way.

Hold on a minute.

I've been looking into
my own family tree,

and I thought I'd compare it
with the Davenstocks.

And?

Well, if you go back
to the early 18th century,

they've got their estate in Chelsea

and 12,000 acres in Scotland.

Whereas my ancestors

owned nothing at all and were
farm labourers in Suffolk.

Sorry, your point is?

Now he's wanted for m*rder
and I'm not.

- Fascinating.
- [ASHLEY] Right?

We got a call about...

Yeah.

Davenstock's clothing.

I've run all the usual tests,
and there's not a single trace

of g*nsh*t residue on any of them.

Which means he definitely
didn't fire the g*n.

Unless he'd stripped
to his waist first.

And is that the case
with Trent Wilsher?

Davenstock told us
that Trent fired a warning shot.

OK, I'll, erm,

re-examine his clothing
more specifically

to make sure nothing has been missed.

[INDISTINCT]

We've had the results back
from our forensic tests.

And there's no g*nsh*t residue
on any of your clothes

which suggests that you weren't
near the g*n when it went off.

Well, that's odd
because I was holding it.

Still these experts get it wrong
all the time, don't they?

[LAYLA] So your story depends

on convincing a jury that you're right

and an experienced professional
is wrong.

Look, I... I don't get this.

You're trying to convince me
that I didn't sh**t him.

I'm being honest
and saying that I did.

Tell us about the money.

Were you borrowing from the Wilshers

cos the bank had cut you off?

- Where did you get that from?
- Your brother.

He said the Davenstocks
was no longer willing

- to cover your gambling debts.
- Oh, please.

I might have had
a minor cash flow problem,

but I'm the head of the family.

What about your plan to change

the terms of succession
so that your children

with Freddie Rollanson
would stand in line?

Oh, someone's been listening
to the family gossip.

Gossip relevant to our investigation.

[LAYLA] Is it true that you need
unanimous agreement to change

the terms of succession?

I haven't read
the precious tomes recently.

So if you adopt a son,
he wouldn't be able to inherit?

There's always a way.

Look, I'm a bit hazy

about what happened that night.
I'd taken a shitload of drugs,

to be honest, slapped wrist
for that, obviously.

But what I'm telling you is the truth.

Scout's honour.

It's the first time I've met a suspect

who seemed determined to prove
that he did commit m*rder.

I know.

Max, the CPS have been on again.

The Home Office are wondering

where the charges
are going to be announced.

Tell them to mind their own business.

Really?

Thank them for their kind inquiry.

We're pursuing a few leads at present,

and we'll let them know when
we're ready to press charges.

Great.

Well...

Here we are.

Wait, this one?

Yep.

Wow, they've certainly got character.

I mean, you wouldn't want
to live on one of these

modern swanky boats, would you?

You might as well live on dry land.

And this is my new bike.

Wow.

Well, that's snazzy.

Thank you.

Shall we?

Oh, erm,

- mind your step.
- Thank you.

[SNIFFING]

Er...

Y-You might want to stay there.

[SNIFFS] Oh, no.

- Oh... Oh, no.
- Shall I come in?

Erm... er...

Whoa, Max, what's that smell?

What are you thinking?

Freddie Rollanson insists
he didn't see Rory Davenstock

leave after the sh**ting.

What are we missing?

Listen, I'm gonna take
another look at the church.

Do you want one of us
to come with you?

No, no, I'll be fine.

[WHIRRING]

Have you got a bigger spanner?

Er, yeah. Erm...

[CLANGING]

- You all right?
- Well, don't worry about me.

I'm used to getting my hands dirty.

It was your macerated pump.

The valve would come loose.

I, er, thought that was it.

Do you even know what that does?

It has a little rear,
you know, with a chop!

[LAUGHS] It's best not to ask.

- Let me help you.
- [GRUNTS]

Thank you.

Put that back in the box.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

[MOBILE RINGING]

- Hi.
- Whereabouts are you?

I'm in the church.

There's a hidden door in the flat.

Are you on your own?

I'll be fine.

I'll stay on the line.

There's a staircase.

I'm gonna go down
and see where it goes.

Are you still there?

[ALARM BLARING]

[ALARM RINGING]

sh*t.

[MUTTERING]

[ALARM BLARING]

[DOOR CLANGS]

- [RATTLING]
- Ugh!

[SIGHS]

[RINGING]

Ashley.

Max, er, I've got the results.

Retesting Trent Wilsher's
clothing for g*nsh*t residue.

Yeah, go on.

Max, look at me.

Oh, yeah, sorry.
Trent Wilsher's clothes.

There's definitely no residue.

None at all. Sorry about that.

No, no, no, that's fine.

That makes sense.

OK. Thank... Thanks, Ashley.

[MOBILE VIBRATING]

- Jess.
- Max, Layla's

somewhere underneath
St Edward's Church.

She went down a staircase
and I lost contact with her.

She's on her own.

Her last signal
came from under the church

and seems to be heading towards...

- Davenstock's Bank.
- Davenstock's Bank.

[MAX] OK, pick me up on the way.

I've worked out what we're missing.

When Trent Wilsher was k*lled,

there were three people
in that church.

[ALARM BLARING]

[EXHALING]

[SIREN WAILING]

She's underneath us somewhere.

Signal's gone again.

There's a door here. It's open.

[ALARM CONTINUES]

[JESS] She's down there
somewhere. She must be.

[DOORKNOB RATTLING]

Hello?

Police.

[GRUNTS]

What on Earth's going on?

I'll explain in a minute.
Have you got a key?

Put your hands up!

What are you doing here?

My name is Detective Sergeant
Layla Walsh.

I'm a police officer.

I don't believe you.

I need you to put that g*n down.

I'm going to reach for my badge.

Keep your hands up!

[ALARM CONTINUES]

This isn't the sort
of thing I usually do.

- Just hurry!
- What's your accent?

It's Irish, isn't it?
You're one of the Wilshers.

I'm a police officer.

You've caused us nothing but trouble.

You need to put that g*n down.

Do you think I wouldn't use it?

Do you think
it's only men who sh**t g*ns?

Here, give them to me.

[g*nsh*t]

Sylvestra Davenstock,

I'm arresting you for the m*rder
of Trent Wilsher.

Connor.

- Are you OK?
- Yeah.

[EXHALING]

I knew Rory had been gambling,

but I didn't know how bad it had got.

I had said to him lots of times,
"Why are you associating

"with people like the Wilshers?"

Freddie left a message
saying he'd seen Trent Wilsher

going into the church.

He sounded worried.

And where were you?

I was at home.
It was the middle of the night.

I could tell it was serious.

I came round through the tunnel
so I wouldn't be seen.

There's a side door to the bank
only family members can use.

So you crept in unnoticed and... what?

They were arguing, shouting
at each other, it was horrible.

Trent had a g*n in his hand.

Rory rushed at Trent
and the g*n came free.

I grabbed it.

He started taunting me.

"You will never sh**t.
You'll never dare."

The idea that this man
was threatening my brother.

I was thinking of the family.

Of course.

The future of the family
is in your hands.

You're pregnant, aren't you?

How do you know that?

That's why you were unwell
at the press conference.

Rory can't be a father himself.

So, with you as a surrogate,
the child would be

a biological Davenstock
and could inherit.

- Well, if it's a boy...
- It is a boy.

We had a scan last week.

Me, Rory...

...and the baby's father, Freddie.

My son will become the Earl.

And you'll be in prison.

I did it to protect my brother.

So why the second shot?

That was my idea.

We agreed Rory would lay low
for a while and then

claim he'd acted in self-defence.

And Freddie Rollanson,
was he in on it?

Not at all.

Freddie's the best thing
that's ever happened to Rory.

He's finally found someone
who means something to him.

And your brother was happy
to risk being convicted

for a m*rder he didn't commit?

We're twins.
We look out for each other.

- He's an honourable man.
- Is he?

He's damaged.

We all are in this family.

Generation after generation.

It's made a mess of us all.

Abby, an announcement
is going to be made

that a suspect is being charged
with Trent's m*rder.

Rory Davenstock.

It's not quite what you're expecting,

but it won't be long now.

Abby, are you all right?

Do you need any support?

I've just lost my husband.

I don't know what you're suggesting.

I was wondering whether you
needed any help more generally.

I remember you.

I was dancing in the club in Dagenham,

working for tips
and living in a sh*thole.

I can't go back to them.

- Abby...
- [DOOR OPENS]

[DOOR CLOSES]

Everything all right now?

Yeah, fine.

Detective was just leaving.

She was always trouble.

When she was a teenager,
she was sectioned

for burning down her boarding school.

Been in and out
of institutions for years.

All of the Davenstocks have it,

but it's worse in Syli.

It's called porphyria.

Happens in families where
the gene pool is too narrow.

They used to think George III had it,

the so-called "Mad King".

He was friends with the first Earl.

They gambled together.

Well, you're not
a Davenstock yourself.

You married into the family.

I knew the risks. It was my choice.

I suppose I'll have
to get a carer now,

if only for the company.

- You've got your two sons.
- [SCOFFS]

[LAUGHS] Do you have children?

Don't depend on them if you do.

[BIRDS SCREECH]

So I'm forgiven for my little
bit of detective work?

One more strike and you're out.

But did it help you solve the case?

Well, if it did, I wouldn't give you

the satisfaction of admitting it.

I know what I was meaning to ask you.

Are there any inherited

conditions in the family
that you're aware of?

Well, does a chronic inability
to make money count?

Mmm, probably.

But there's nothing sinister
in the Arnold blood?

I could... m*rder people

who put me on hold
when I'm trying to phone

the council to complain about
the rubbish collection.

Oh, me too.

And people who ride electric
scooters on the pavement.

[OLIVIA] Now, don't get me started.

[MAX] I can't stand pizza deliveries.

They turn up stone cold.

[OLIVIA] Can't you learn
to cook for yourself?

I sometimes wonder
what you do all day.

[MAX] I'm busy solving crimes.
