Well, her life itself

when I was like 20.
I got married really young.

And then I did get divorced
a couple years ago.

And so, just kind of living

out on my own after all of that.

But I feel like, with every
sad thing that happened,

you know,
something good happens.

My collection is fully modest.
It's super important for me

to be able to show that
on a platform

as huge as New York
Fashion Week.

So we can start with this one.

It's got ruffles.

It's sheath style,
but then, you know,

-has layers and things.
-Beautiful.

This one was a little bit
more casual.

And then I paired it
with a miniskirt,

and then these, like, slacks.

The distressing was inspired
by the birch trees

-I took pictures of.
-I can see.

AYANA:
Hopefully.

I can just reach out
and touch Fashion Week.

Like, it is so close to me.

So, if I can just get
everything done,

then I feel like I have
a really good shot

to show at New York
Fashion Week.

You need to work hard,
and you need to work smart.

So, this is my parents' house.

How I came up
with this collection is:

I grew up in a really fun house.
We had a really fun couch.

This is an actual picture of
my parents' couch in the '80s.

-All right.
-And it was two fabrics,

and they were very wild
and tropical.

I'm putting fish. I'm putting
parrots. I'm putting

everything but the kitchen sink
into this collection,

and I'm kind of scared.

I love, and I'm obsessed
with textiles.

So, to design my own print
was a must for this collection.

-Exquisite.
-Thank you. You like them?

I love them. Don't just
like them. I love them.

Oh, that's great.
'Cause I love them, too,

but I'm like,
"Are people gonna get it?"

I'm crazy about them.

[hushed]:

I could die of happiness
right now.

The second part of it is,
I designed this crochet

to go with these gold rings.

For me,
it has a cheapening effect.

-I think it brings it down,

and to a level
that it doesn't need to be.

If you send out all these looks
with these gold rings,

you are sending out
a sinking ship.

I based a lot of it around these
gold rings. Now it's like...

But there's no reason
to change a single shape.

Just get rid of them.

But I'm, like, scared that if

I take these out...
what will I do?

-Well, that's a question.
-I'm sure I'll figure it out.

That contrast,

My looks are totally me.

They can be super fun,
flirty and romantic in a way,

but there's always in my
styling and the silhouettes,

there's always room
for a little bit of hip-hop,

and that's kind of me.

I feel confident about my looks
and what I presented,

and I feel it's strong enough
to get me through

to New York Fashion Week.

AYANA: I cannot get
enough of those pants.

MARGARITA: She walks out,
and she is k*ller.

I can see Zac and Nina's face.

Eyebrows are rising.

It is incredible.

I hope the judges can see

that I am not just
any old designer.

I am an apparel designer.

of how I create.

with nude pleated look,

thinking,

that I've selected

are intended
to be teaser pieces

to make the judges think,

"Well, what else
do you have to say?"

And I hope that I've selected
the right ones.

I'm showing the judges
something

a little bit different
than what I normally show them.

what I've done,
if the judges understand

where I'm coming from,
then they'll want

to see more from me.

Designers, before we decide

we have some questions for you.

Kenya, we're going

Tell us about your inspiration
and why you chose

those two looks
to present us today.

I made this collection
that was vacation, dreamy

and a little business
at the same time,

and I chose these two pieces

because I think these ladies
look classic

and chic and sophisticated
and polished,

and that's what I like.

-So, I like your pearl cover-up
very much. -Mm-hmm.

I feel like there's
a cover-up story happening

from these two looks
in different ways,

but I think that there
are some major fit issues.

When the black dress came
down the runway,

it was moving
all over the place,

so make that fit great,
because if you nail that dress,

it's a dress you could run with.

Got you.

Can you open the robe
a little bit?

-Oh, well, look at that.

NINA: I don't understand
why everything has a cover-up.

do look cohesive,

because you see all the seams
and all the lines,

but you have to be careful, too,

that it's not gonna be
a snooze fest.

It's a make-it-work moment.

HEIDI:

Ayana, please tell us
about your inspiration.

Um, I titled my collection
"Evolution,"

to tell my personal story
of my journey through my life.

There have been lots
of ups and downs,

and my collection is kind of
an emotional type of collection,

and I thought it would work
in my favor to

show you something that maybe
you haven't seen from me before.

I love this juxtaposition of
the distressed and the refined.

It does look like sportswear,
and it looks active.

So all that combination
makes it feel very luxurious.

I'm pretty mad
about that jacket.

I like that you worked
your fabrics

to get an emotional quality
to them.

I'm intrigued.

-I want to see more.

HEIDI:
Thank you, Ayana. Kentaro.

So, um, my inspiration is from,
um, Japanese dry lake,

using white sand and big stone

and using light and shadows,

so I wanted to showcase
those two, uh,

as a part of my collection.

To me, the white look
is questionable.

I'm not a huge fan of this look.

The cream, on the other hand,
I'm in absolute love with.

I think it looks so expensive
and super sophisticated,

and then you have
the white one next to it.

I just don't understand how
these two looks fit together.

To me, they're not cohesive.

There is a real disconnect
between this piece

and your white piece,

but I really love
your color palette here.

What I don't like:

It feels like you get
very conceptual

and you try very hard,
you're trying too hard,

so your clothes,
all of a sudden, have no soul.

They're just clothes.

I don't know where this is
going, so I'm a little nervous.

If it all stays
in this direction,

I don't think it's enough.

Brandon, tell us
about your inspiration

and how these two looks
represent your collection.

So I call this collection
"Layers of Love,"

and I tried to find
the girlfriend collection

-to my menswear.
-[chuckles]

I tried to make it, like,
fun and flirty and cute and sexy

and kind of everything
that I think she is.

It is the female version of you
in clothes. [chuckles]

If that's possible.

I'm particularly in love
with this look,

because it's such a phenomenal
balance of proportion.

This one, on the other hand,
she's got a lot going on.

The top, the strings.

The closures on the side.

It needs something quieter.

But all in all,
I think the attitude is great,

and I love seeing you play with
a more feminine color palette.

-I love it.

I do not care for this top.

-Okay.
-I think that the shearing

looks really sloppy
and messy underneath.

-Okay.
-It really jumps out

because everything else
is so crisp and precise.

-Okay.
-It can be better.

And I know you can bang it out.

-I've seen it in challenges.

HEIDI:

Margarita.

MARGARITA:
Thinking about the collection,

I was looking at old pictures,

and I found this one of me
and my sisters playing Monopoly,

and the couch was this wild
stripe and all-over print.

And I wanted to convey that joy.

So I reimagined that couch
from the '80s,

created my own textiles,
beaded the whole thing

because, you know,
I love sparkle.

HEIDI:
It's pretty gutsy,

I have to say, Margarita.

It's very loud,
and it's very out there.

So either people really
respond to that, or they don't.

I happen to like this print.

NINA:
There is certainly

no lack of exuberance
or attitude

in your clothes.
You don't have to put

everything and the kitchen sink
in the same outfit.

Particularly the b*mber jacket.

Can we take that off?

Is that a bathing suit
underneath?

-It's a bodysuit.
-It's a bodysuit.

For me, this short look
really doesn't look great

because you have the shearing
across the midriff on the top.

It becomes a throwaway look.

I don't need to see this
on a runway.

HEIDI:

Kenya, why should you
move forward to compete

at New York Fashion Week?

KENYA:
I think my silhouettes are good,

I think that I have
a story to tell,

and simply 'cause I really want
to be there.

Lord knows I want
to be there so bad.

I just really want it.

I feel like I'm ready.

I'm in the perfect position
of my life to take

the modest market by storm.

And I am teachable.

I'm ready to step
into the spotlight

and do what I feel like
I'm meant to do.

Kentaro.

I felt like I was ready
to showcase my collection

before I came here,
but after talking to you guys,

I feel like...
I'm, like, ready to...

not really ready, but... but...

I hope, um, I can improve
my collection

in the next few... day or hours,

so I hope I can have
this opportunity.

HEIDI:
Brandon.

I feel like I've had a clear
point of view the whole time,

and I've stuck true to that.

My identity is very clear,
and I know what I want to make,

and so yeah, I would just love
to compete on this platform.

And Margarita.

MARGARITA:
With almost 70 million

Latin Americans
living in the U.S.,

my point of view
will be wildly accepted.

And I think it's fun
and different,

and I just make sure
that the women feel

really confident and beautiful
in what I make.
