- Dorian is the guy who signed us up at the gym.

I really don't know Dorian at all.

I'm the only one who hasn't come yet.

- It's a three-level club.

So on the first level you have your fitness studios,

they have yoga, pilates, kickboxing, boxing.

On the second level is our main workout floor,

it's your cardio equipment, your free weights,

your Nautilus equipment.

So that's pretty much what you're, what you're looking at

in terms of our facility. - Cool, awesome.

I go to work out.

- MELANIE: I'm really excited to be working

with The Philadelphia Soul.

We're going to be working with kids

and building a playground for them.

- Good morning. - Hello, hi.

- This is Donna, she works at Northern Home.

- Hi, welcome. Welcome to Northern Home for Children.

- SARAH: Northern Home is a non-profit organization

that works with kids in the community.

They have a truancy program and a foster program.

- DONNA: We're a very positive place.

We really believe in bringing kids to their fullest potential

and making them feel really good about themselves.

A lot of the kids that come to our programs

have some pretty upsetting backgrounds.

But the interesting part about them,

that I think you're gonna all find,

is they're sponges for love.

If you smile, they're yours for life.

- WILLIE: These kids have no resources at all.

And a lot of them, I assume, really just don't have

much positivity or love in their life.

The fact that it's our job to make them happy

is really rewarding, and the best part

of this whole experience.

- SHAVONDA: I'm Vonda.

- MAN: [yelling]

- LANDON: I feel very fortunate to be part of the benefit

that The Philadelphia Soul is bringing for Northern Home.

- [horns honking]

- MJ: We need to find East.

- LANDON: Traffic, traffic.

- KARAMO: Hold on, that says East over there.

- LANDON: Yeah, you're right.

- MELANIE: Ugh, Landon.

Landon gets really pissy sometimes

and I'm kind of over the pissiness.

Landon, chill out. - [unintelligible]

- MELANIE: You said, "[bleep] you" to me for no reason.

- KARAMO: You do it every day.

- MELANIE: I don't say it with such animosity

as Landon said it to me. - Yeah.

- I'm really, like, mad at Mel right now.

Just because of the way she b*tches me out all the time.

- MJ: Yeah, well, everybody is though.

- It really upsets me. - MJ: Everybody's like that.

- I know, but I'm the only person she attacks.

I think as a person, I'm much more sensitive

than just the average Joe.

I think too deeply into what people say sometimes.

It's just annoying and it hurts, you know?

- MJ: Just be like, "Hey, I'm tired of you always

"snapping at me, Mel."

She'll do her little eye thing or she'll go like this,

[sighs] Whatever.

But I mean, she's gonna take it in

and she has a heart too.

She just has to be set in her place sometimes.

We're all just kind of fed up

with Melanie's opinions on everything.

She's not wanting to piss people off in the house

then she just needs to relax a little bit

and just kind of go with the flow.

So, moral of the story is just walk up to her,

punch her in her nose, kick her in her teeth.

It'll all be okay. - LANDON: Totally [bleep] off.

- WILLIE: What's up, man? - Hey, how you doing?

- KARAMO: I want a companion for my fate,

someone to share everything with as I live in Philadelphia.

I don't know what initially it was that made me

Everybody that I've been chilling with is friends of Dan.

- [laughing] I hear you're in the mob.

Hopefully both of us will be having some action tomorrow,

- So, I've been told that everyone's aware

of the project that you're gonna do?

- ALL: Yes.

- Our special project is to build a playground

on the premises of Northern Home.

- ANTHONY: Today we wanna select a location

on the grounds here.

And I'd like you to walk around the grounds,

we're gonna do that next.

- KARAMO: Well, we're all very excited.

We're ready to get started. - WOMAN: Perfect.

- Let's pick the location.

- LANDON: This design that we're gonna have to do

for the playground is so me, this is what I've been going

to school for the last three years.

This would be a high-use area.

- I don't like it here.

- LANDON: No, I was just saying, like...

- MELANIE: I don't like it.

- If you took out this right here and put in, like,

a retaining wall right up next to...

- MELANIE: I don't like it.

- LANDON: Not underneath but right next to it.

- I hear Mel mumbling, "I don't like it."

And I just am really annoyed and compelled

to just tell her to shut up.

We're just exploring options, honey.

Let him talk. - I am.

- LANDON: You know, just creating space.

- MELANIE: Sometimes people think I'm bitchy

or too opinionated, but I like those things about me.

- [horn honking]

- She was like, "Why were you so mean to me?"

- SARAH: Mel? - Yeah.

We're just trying to be proactive

about what we could do in this second field.

- SARAH: Uh-huh.

- WILLIE: And all she keeps on saying is "I don't like it,

I don't like it, I don't like it."

She said it six times.

Once Mel comes to an opinion about something, that's it,

there's no ifs, ands or buts about it.

That's just the way it is.

I would just like, you know, "Well, can you just please

be quiet and let him talk."

And then she's like, "Why were you mean to me?"

That's not mean, I'm sorry.

- SARAH: No.

She's very assertive and speaks her mind

but when someone gives it back to her she can't take it.

Mel needs to find that happy medium

between being a strong female and being overzealous

about her opinions.

- I'm opinionated myself, but I'm not rude.

- Exactly.

- [birds tweeting]

- [phone ringing]

- DAN: Willie, Willie. - Hi, baby.

- DAN: How are you? - Good, how are you?

- DAN: So tired. Oh, my God.

- WILLIE: Dan is a personal flight attendant.

He flies all over the world and he is never home.

I'm excited to see him.

- So maybe we can nappy nappy. - Okay.

- I've never been in a long-distance relationship,

but I adore Dan to pieces.

I do see Dan and I being happy together.

- KARAMO: Tonight is Dorian and my first date.

I'm very happy that Dorian and I are going out this evening.

- DORIAN: It took so much for me to get to where I am.

My fifth year of college, man.

Here I go from being some big ladies-man kind of athlete

to being this g*y guy.

One of the things I've learned, you know,

in my short time here on earth is you gotta stay true

to who you are. I'm g*y.

- Family members who didn't know before I left,

I had to, like, break it down. You know what I mean?

I'm the baby of three older sisters and I tell you,

I've never dealt with so much crying.

They didn't understand why I was trying to ruin my life.

But my father, my father went crazy, cussing me out,

telling me he ain't got no [bleep] son.

I'm coming from a pretty religious Caribbean background

that is not accepting of h*m*.

There's nothing to be ashamed of.

- KARAMO: It's one thing to hear that the person

you're close with is g*y but it's another thing to see them

in the act itself.

And that makes me a little bit nervous

about actually pursuing and going further with someone.

- What is the problem?

- KARAMO: I just can't deal with this.

Like, I cannot be myself with them in my face.

of discomfort with his sexuality and he feels the need

to sort of hide it.

- Did you not know this coming into this, or?

- KARAMO: Yeah, and that's why I told myself

coming into this that I wasn't gonna be intimate.

- You know what, Karamo?

You have to deal with some [bleep].

Like, that is life. That's just life.

And so, um, to deal with it is not to deal with it.

And I'll just have to abstain for four months.

of a rash decision.

- KARAMO: I'm just a shy person when it comes to

that area and I'm just...

- DAN: But maybe this is what's,

like, trying to press that issue.

Because this is always gonna be what's going on

for the next four months.

You just need to be like, "Whatever. "This is how it is."

- KARAMO: Dan is providing me with the courage

to be in Philadelphia and to seek relationships.

When I realized there's things that I don't wanna deal with,

I don't deal with them.

- DAN: So you're just sort of like,

"Okay, too intense, done."

Don't you think that sometimes things are worth going

a little bit deeper and like digging into and...

- I'm glad you think so. - DAN: Yeah?

Well, just keep an open mind.

- He's telling me this to only help me.

So it really put a light bulb off in my head

that, yo, I really gotta work on this

before it really starts messing up my life.

- SARAH: Why is there traffic?

- WILLIE: This traffic sucks!

- SARAH: This is ridiculous!

Really fantastic.

- I hope somebody explains to Donna why we're late.

- WILLIE: You can blame it on me.

- MELANIE: I don't want the blame with anyone,

I want somebody to take the initiative.

- MJ: Mel is a confrontational girl

and I think she's always used to just saying

what she wants to say.

And kind of gets away with it.

- MELANIE: This is so not cool you guys, so not cool.

- Okay, we know. Done. - Okay, I hate being late.

- WILLIE: I heard you the first time.

- MELANIE: That's fine, I'm not talking to you, though.

- WILLIE: Sorry we're late.

- DONNA: No problem at all.

The playground's over here.

- MJ: We're going around with Donna and Anthony

and seven of the kids from Northern Home.

And we're gonna look at a few different playgrounds

and try to get an idea of exactly what we want

for our playground.

- KID: You crazy!

- Watch this.

- I like that.

I think this is fun and even like, it's plastic.

- KID: Hey look, it's a twisty slide.

- KID: We need a climbing wall.

- What about a water fountain that has chocolate milk

that comes out of it? - No, fruit punch.

- MJ: You want fruit punch?

Hey, no chocolate.

They want fruit punch.

Some of the things that the kids are wanting

are a little out there.

One of the requests is a sauna, if we can get a sauna,

incorporate that somehow.

- [laughing]

- KARAMO: I love working with kids.

Kids are great, they're our future.

We need to spend some time with them.

- Good night.

- Too much playing. [laughs]

- Yeah, just a little bit.

- [thunder booming]

- [rain splashing]

- WILLIE: Sometimes it's really annoying how Mel

like negates everything other people say

if she doesn't agree.

- MJ: She puts her two cents in

when it's not needed. - When it's not asked.

And I dug Melanie the first week we were here

and then after that... [blowing raspberry]

The way she is is hindering my wanting to hang out with her.

- MJ: We all have our little things

that bug other people and that's just part of, that's life.

For Mel, her deal is she doesn't wanna be the b*tch,

and if you say you're being like that

or you're acting like that she, like, freaks out.

And she's just kind of like... - WILLIE: But she is.

- "Oh, you don't think that I am,

"you don't think that I'm being like that, do you?

I just want everybody to like me."

- WILLIE: I hate people who pretend to be what they're not.

- Exactly!

And you need to tell her that.

- I tell everyone when they annoy me.

If they annoy me I'm gonna let 'em know.

- SHAVONDA: You know who's having a hard time

dealing with that too, is Landon.

He was like, "She's always mean to me."

- KARAMO: We're all sitting here in consensus about Melanie,

is there a consensus about everyone?

- SHAVONDA: The only consensus that I think

everyone has a problem with is Melanie.

- [thunder booming]

- KARAMO: What time you wanna hook up?

Like maybe the next hour, hour...

- DORIAN: I'm in my car right now.

- DORIAN: So, what do you have planned for yourself

this week? - KARAMO: Work.

- It's actually going pretty good.

I think I told you already, we're working with the kids

and so forth. - Yeah, yeah, the kids.

- And we're supposed to be building them a playground.

The other day we were supposed to go out and do surveys

on different playgrounds. - DORIAN: Yeah.

- KARAMO: I kept on trying to apologize to my roommates,

because they were all like, you know, looking at the things

and testing the weight, and I'm playing with the kids.

My focus is that these young brothers know

that I'm here for them, they can talk to me.

They can start to trust me.

- And it's something that's very commendable.

Because you actually care.

And no matter how rough and tough, and, you know,

hard on the outside you may be, that soft thing is still

it's there, dude.

Like, you can't change it.

- KARAMO: Dorian can see it in me,

that I am striving to open up myself.

He makes me feel like I have an outlet

while I'm here in Philadelphia.

Someone to share my fears with, my dreams with.
