Dorian wants a friend, someone he can trust.

- KARAMO: I don't have any real white friends.

- Why don't you have any white friends?

- My father, upbringing.

At the age of , my father had me reading books

on the Civil Rights Movement.

As I became more educated on the struggles of African-Americans,

it turned me off more and more from White America,

because I didn't have anyone there telling me, "Listen,

what happened then isn't happening now."

Dorian has noticed that I do have some distrust issues with

people outside of my race.

That distrust that was subconscious caused me never to

pursue a friendship.

- I don't have that distrust.

- It's just not something that I had.

Some of my closest friends are white guys.

From my years on this Earth, these people who have become

some of my best friends have never done anything to me to

warrant me to not trust them.

- ♪

- Dorian's not what I'm used to dating.

We can have some very intellectual conversations.

But after the intellectual conversations, I need an oomph,

and essence that will captivate me and get me going

and keep me intrigued.

[sighs] I don't know if like these feelings are just because

I'm in this environment.

- He's a very nice guy.

- When we're in his car, we were listening to like--

[laughs]--'s--'s R&B, you know what I mean?

That's what he loves.

I need somebody who also embraces the hip-hop culture,

and really has that inside of them.

When things start to bother me or start to worry me or I start

thinking about something, I pace.

It's how I process, you know what I mean?

- Yeah, we all different ways.

- SARAH'S MOM: Everything here is quiet.

I'm still finishing up radiation.

- SARAH: My mother is sick.

She was diagnosed when I was with CLL,

which is a type of leukemia.

She's undergoing radiation therapy, which is good,

and she's happy.

As happy as you can be.

How's radiation going?

- SARAH'S MOM: Oh, it's such a barrel of laughs.

Like some sort of medieval t*rture.

- SARAH: My mom, with her cancer,

kinda fooled herself into thinking that she could

control it.

And then in the past few months,

she didn't have control over it anymore.

And she...crumbled.

- SARAH'S MOM: Everything that I eat is like sawdust.

So everything that I eat I have to glass of something

with--water, tea, anything.

It's like awful.

It's pretty funny.

So, uh, but it hasn't stopped me from exercise.

- [sighs]

- ♪

- My eating problems didn't start until I found out

my mom had cancer.

I felt so out of control in my life,

I didn't know how to deal with it.

I didn't wanna express it outwardly,

and I just started to destroy myself inwardly.

- Did she have breast cancer?

- No, she has chronic lymphoma.

When we found out she had it, we were told

she had five to ten years to live.

- I'm sorry about that.

- The thing is is when someone's ill,

like everyone goes through hardships.

It's not an excuse to destroy yourself.

Like my mom wishes she could be healthy.

And I'm sitting here doing something

so unhealthy to myself.

- Was it anorexia or bulimia?

- First it was anorexia, and then bulimia.

- You're still doing it? - No!

I haven't done it in like months.

- I have been around a lot of girls who have had

eating disorders.

I do understand what she's going through.

- ♪

- ♪

- Brie's my ex-girlfriend from college.

We were together for two years.

We maintain a relationship even after we broke up.

This is the first time I've actually seen her in two years.

What's going on, Mama? - Nothing.

- I like the earrings.

- Oh, you noticed these?

- I wonder how many black people actually come in here.

I really feel like real ignorant,

because I haven't been here, and I'm in Philly.

- ♪

- Philadelphia has a rich tradition.

I see all these things that talk about liberty and justice and

how this is the founding place of all that is our country.

These founding fathers had sl*ves,

and so I'm in turmoil over that.

Remember our freshman year when we all marched on the Capitol?

Were you there that day? - Mm, yeah.

I kinda went halfway. - [laughs] Halfway.

- [laughs] We don't look back enough.

- Hmm-mm. Not hardly enough.

- This so crazy--sitting here with you.

We didn't even go out to dinner that much when we were together.

- That's because we were poor and freshman.

- During the time that we were together,

I didn't sleep with any man.

After we were finished, I was like, "Brie,

I really do enjoy the company of men more than women."

We were able to be such close friends now because

I was fully honest with him.

- Do you love your boyfriend?

- Are you talking about Dorian? We're just talking.

I don't know if it's gonna work. - Why?

- I like more, um, hip-hop type style.

- So what is he? Like-- - He's--

- --a Banana Republic? - He's--yeah,

and he likes way too much pop music for me.

- You can't not like somebody just because

of their music choice.

- Right, but what about if music is a large part of your life?

I listen to music a lot.

And that's a problem.

- Maybe you haven't exposed him to that.

You shouldn't just give up on a person.

- We'll see.

- It was just good to be with somebody who knows

my personality, knows my sense of humor.

It was just a big relief.

- ♪

- Hello? What's wrong?

- RACHEL: I'm in Philadelphia. - Oh.

- RACHEL: We'll be there in an hour.

- I didn't know this.

Why didn't you tell me this ahead of time?

- RACHEL: We just decided.

Instead of staying in Baltimore, we'd stay in Philadelphia.

- My mom and my sister have decided to stop off

in Philadelphia for a night before they drive to New York.

I knew that they were driving up,

but I wasn't even expecting to see them at all.

[sighs]

- RACHEL: Don't act annoyed.

- I'm not annoyed, I'm just saying,

like you should warn me about these things.

And I have work tomorrow.

- RACHEL: Well, fine, be a b*tch if you--

- I'm not being a b*tch, Rachel, it's my job.

- RACHEL: Fine, we'll stay in Philadelphia

and not see you, okay?

- I wanna see you, but what am I supposed to do?

I'm blindsided by the fact that they're in town,

and I wanna see my mother.

But at the same time, I don't.

She's just undergone radiation therapy,

and I've never had to see any physical effects

from...her illness.

It's selfish, but it's just the way I feel.

- SARAH'S MOM: Hi, sweetie. - Hey, Mommy.

- SARAH'S MOM: You can't get out of whatever you have today?

- No, I have to do it. - SARAH'S MOM: Are you okay?

- Yeah, I'm fine, I'm just tired.

- SARAH'S MOM: I love you. - SARAH: I love you, too.

- SARAH'S MOM: Okay. - Bye.

- SARAH'S MOM: Bye-bye, take a nap.

- ♪

- MELANIE: What's wrong? - Nothing.

- ♪

- My mom and my sister are in Philly.

- MELANIE: They're in Philly? - In an hour.

- MELANIE: So cool.

- SARAH: I'm just in a bad mood. - MELANIE: Why?

- They should have told me earlier, you know?

Like warn me. - Yeah.

- You look like you're in the worst mood today.

- Well, I don't like seeing my mom when she has like no hair.

- It's hard, huh? - Yeah.

Me being here right now, as much as I don't want to admit it,

is an escape for me.

I'm kind of like in a bubble.

I'm upset right now that I'm crying,

I'm upset that I'm not wanting to see my own mother,

who I love more than anybody in the entire world.

My bubble has burst.

- ♪

- [bell dings]

- [groans]

- MELANIE: [whispers] Should I leave you alone?

I'm just sad that you're not gonna see her.

- I'm just able to avoid a lot of things right now in my life.

I get in this bubble and avoid reality, and...

- Sarah wants to not deal with the fact

that her mom has cancer.

I can really relate because when my grandma had cancer,

I would avoid home a lot and not wanna deal with it much

in the same way that Sarah's dealing with her mom.

It's hard, Sarah.

Let yourself be upset.

- I know that it's probably gonna be good for me to just

see her tonight, and get used to confronting her cancer.

- ♪

- [phone ringing]

- SARAH'S MOM: Hello? - Mommy?

- SARAH'S MOM: Yeah. - Hey, have you guys eaten?

- SARAH'S MOM: No, we haven't eaten yet.

- Do you wanna go eat somewhere?

- SARAH'S MOM: We'd love to go eat someplace.

- I was thinking of taking you to this restaurant

called Joan's.

- SARAH'S MOM: Okay, that's good.

- You could come meet me here.

- SARAH'S MOM: Okay.

- Is Daddy with you? - SARAH'S MOM: Yeah.

- Oh, I didn't know that.

- SARAH'S MOM: So, we'll be leaving in about five minutes.

- Okay. - SARAH'S MOM: Okay.

- Love you. - SARAH'S MOM: Bye-bye.

- How are you?

- You seem much happier to see us now.

- I am. - Are you okay?

- Yeah.

My sister and I are complete opposites,

but we have that sisterly bond.

How are you? - I'm bald. [laughs]

- Yeah, look at her hair. - I know.

- [laughs] Pretty bad.

But we'll survive.

- ♪

- SARAH: It's nice to see you guys.

- I haven't seen you since I had radiation.

Actually, I've improved a lot.

- RACHEL: It looked like someone had put an iron

to the side of her head. - Yeah, it was not pretty.

- SARAH: I'm glad I didn't see it.

- Want some salad? It's very hard to eat.

- I'm full. - Okay.

- SARAH: I want a couple bites, 'cause I like it though.

- Help yourself. It's really hard for me to eat.

- I know.

I can't control my mom's cancer.

I can't control so many things, and that is ultimately what

drives my obsession with my body and my criticism of myself.

Dad, look how buff I'm getting.

This is thousands of dollars of training.

- Can I ask you a question? - What?

- Have you thrown up? - No, why?

- RACHEL: Just wondering.

- Why are you asking me that, Rachel?

- 'Cause I wanna make sure you're being healthy.

- Rachel-- - [laughs]

- Why are you doing this? - Yeah, Rachel.

I'm eating healthy, I walk everywhere, and I go to the gym.

You know how my face gets, Rachel.

Is my face bloated?

I'm very close with my sister.

I love her to death.

But she does things and thinks certain ways

that I can't understand.

There's a lot of things that I've come to accept about her.

But I don't agree with.

- SARAH: I love you.

Dude, Dorian said he was gonna come over.

He's on the phone.

- You're gonna have to get up. I have my best friend out here.

Are you getting up at all?

- Alright, give me eight minutes.

- I just hate people to stop by my house unexpected,

and then to wake me up out of my sleep?

I hate that crap.

- This is my best friend. Steve.

- I'm not gonna tell Dorian that I'm aggravated.

- I have a headache from like down here,

all the way up to my head.

I feel it in my eye.

but I don't think it's gonna happen.

tonight so that I don't have to.

party, and then you come out with me.

- I'm still really annoyed with Dorian.

- I'm just annoyed.

I mean, he would be a great friend, you know what I mean?

- But sometimes you change your mind.

I force feeling for Dorian because I want companionship

even though he's not really what I like.

- What do you think it is?

- It's a little bit of his personality,

the things he likes are not for me.

And he stops by.

And I was like--

- "No, I have a headache."

- Dorian is great, and I know that Karamo's a hot and cold

person.

But he should take responsibility

and understand that.

Are you feeling him or you're not?

I feel it's unfair for Karamo to lead Dorian on when, really,

he could care less.

- Dorian's on the phone.

- It's supposed to be easy when you date guys,

not supposed to be like girls.

- DORIAN: Tonight, when I came over to see you,

you had a headache.

And then I go out and I come back,

and then I'm told you're out at Pure, it doesn't add up.

- After y'all left, Willie was like--he wanted to go to Pure.

I still had a headache, I wasn't feeling good,

but I knew that it was like gonna be a chill atmosphere,

wasn't gonna be hectic like Glam.

I wasn't in a social mood, especially with meeting your

friend for the first time.

He would have thought I was a straight a*s [bleep] if we

wouldn't went out, and I would've been sitting down.

- DORIAN: Tonight was just like a totally different side of you,

a side of you that I haven't even seen before.

Are you playing?

I mean, that's just as blunt as I can be.

- What the hell?

We're not in a relationship, we're not dating,

we were talking.

- No, there isn't any type of--there's no playing or

anything of that nature.

- DORIAN: I'm telling you right now,

if I didn't think that you were worth having in my life,

- This is more of a conversation we should have face to face.

When I see you, we're really gonna clear some things up.

- It was really good seeing my family.

And I can't say that it made me feel more reassured about her

illness, but I just want her to be okay with things.

I want her to know that I'm at peace.

I want her to know that I'm okay.

- Even though I haven't lost my mom,

when I found out she had cancer, I mourned.

- She's still here.

Honestly, you can't mourn.

You just have to find some way that works for you that lets you

deal with what you're going through.

You don't wanna forget about her.

You don't wanna deny that she's going through that.

- I agree with Melanie that I should not bottle up my

emotions, but I'm just so used to having my emotions

be private.

Sometimes just saying things and talking about them just--

- That's huge. - --makes it more real.

Sometimes you can't always say something,

or sometimes you don't always want to say something that

you're feeling inside, but you can write it down.

- I know that I need to change.

I know that change needs to come from my end.

Nothing is easy in every experience.

That's where growth comes from.
