You know, I'm M.J.'s wingman, and he's my wingman.

He's there for me, and I'm there for him.

- Last week, I kind of tested the waters,

and it's not worth it to me.

You're worth it to me more than anything else.

- ASHLEY: I think I catch your drift.

- This is the true story--

- Of seven strangers-- - MAN: Oh, my god.

- Picked to live in a house--

- Work together and have their lives taped--

- To find out what happens-- - WOMAN: I'm over it.

- When people stop being polite--

- WOMAN: Oh, shut up.

- And start getting real.

- [bell dings]

- M.J.: I'm wanting to slow down a lot, I guess you could say,

as far as going out

and just doing stuff that's kind of out of character for me.

I know I've been going through some changes

as far as the way that I want to act when I'm here.

I truly in my heart feel like Ashley

is the person who I would compare everybody else to,

and there's nobody that I think compares to her

at this point in time in my life.

I think this weekend is going to be, like,

the big telltale sign for us.

- LANDON: How much we need to slow down?

- No, for Ashley and I--

- Oh. - --because she's coming

into town this weekend.

Ashley is coming to Philly, and I'm really looking forward to it

because now we're kind of on a new level,

and she's my girlfriend now,

so I don't have to worry about the trivial stuff anymore.

- ♪

- I can't wait to make out with you.

- ASHLEY: I'm going to kiss you a lot.

- Oh, my god.

I just want to hold you and kiss you.

I might grab your boob.

- ASHLEY: Stop it. - We're years old,

and we're crazy about one another,

and we're talking about kissing like we're planning out--

- ASHLEY: Oh, god.

- The connection that you have with somebody

when you can actually feel their heartbeat

and just hear them and smell them,

it is so much better than, you know,

calling them up on the telephone and just being like,

"Hey, what's up?"

Hey, how excited are you about David coming up here?

- ASHLEY: I am so excited. - David is my best friend.

He's the exact same person I am, personality-wise.

He just happens to be black and '".

David just got drafted

in the first round by the Indiana Pacers.

- ASHLEY: I was just thinking about it,

how many tickets I need to ask him for.

- Yeah, it's going to be awesome.

- ♪

- [phone ringing] - MELANIE: Hello?

- ASHLEY: Hi, is M.J. there? - MELANIE: He is sleeping.

Is this Miss Ashley?

- ASHLEY: Yes. - MELANIE: Are you here?

- ASHLEY: No, girl. I am on a five-hour delay in Nashville.

- MELANIE: No way.

- ASHLEY: Go wake him up, please.

- MELANIE: I will. Hold on a minute.

- ASHLEY: Thank you. - MELANIE: No problem.

M.J., Ashley is on a five-hour delay. She's on the phone.

She's still in Nashville.

- Hello? - ASHLEY: Hey.

- I already kind of heard. - ASHLEY: M.J., this is awful.

The pilot came on and said,

"When you do get to Dulles, Washington,

you'll probably have another two or three-hour delay there.

- Oh, my god, baby. - ASHLEY: I'm telling you,

I'm going to have to sit in an airport for seven hours.

- Oh!

- ASHLEY: What do I do? - This sucks so bad.

I hate not being in control of my environment and my situation,

and especially when it's somebody

that I care about so deeply.

- ASHLEY: M.J., I don't know what to do.

I'm really ready to cry.

- Well, I'm sitting here in my head

trying to think of something that we can do.

- ASHLEY: I mean, there's nothing you can do.

I'm just going to have to tough it out.

- ♪

- MELANIE: M.J., I'm so sorry. It's just so frustrating...

when you can't be in control of something.

- I'm just worried.

I want to be--

I wanna be there for her, and I can't be right now.

You know, I don't like this feeling.

- [phone ringing] - Hello?

- ASHLEY: M.J.? - Hey.

- ASHLEY: I lost my luggage. He said, "Well, ma'am, it's

probably already on a flight to Philadelphia in the morning."

- Why is this happening to me right now?

Why is it happening to us?

All we need to do is just see each other, and we can't do it.

We've been looking up all the Amtrak stuff,

and it can get you here in an hour and minutes.

- ASHLEY: I'll have to get on a taxi,

drive to this train place at o'clock in the morning,

get there at a.m. I mean, I'm just like, I've had it.

I just think I'm going to get a hotel and stay somewhere here.

I could get on that train in the morning, I guess.

- Yes. I hope that this doesn't affect the weekend

that Ashley and I had planned

because all I want to do is just make her happy

and let her know that I'm the man that she wants,

the man that she cares for, her boyfriend.

I just want to see you, baby, I do.

I mean, there's just been so much, like, leading up to this.

Like, we've come so far, and I'm more into you

than I think that you really think that I am.

- ASHLEY: I know you are, and you just are precious,

and I can't wait to be there.

- M.J.: You're finally here.

I'm so sorry for all this, sweetheart.

It feels great to see Ashley. She's been through hell

and back trying to get from Nashville to Philly.

Her poor little sweater is all kind of ripped up and worn.

You look wonderful, though, for a girl

that's been traveling so much.

- Whenever you're constantly talking to somebody

on the phone, all you hear is their voice,

and when you can actually see a face

and hear that voice at the same time,

it makes everything worth the wait.

- DAVID: [indistinct] - Welcome to my humble--

- Abode? - --abode.

- This place is awesome.

- ♪

- Shavonda, this is David.

- Hi, David. - DAVID: How you doing?

- SHAVONDA: Nice to meet you. - This is Landon.

- Hi, nice to meet you.

- ASHLEY: What are you doing up here, by the way?

- I'm just done with preseason camp.

- LANDON: David is kind of like M.J.'s protege,

you know, the kid that he knew in high school

that M.J. helped all the way up through the ranks

and is now become very successful in the NBA.

- SHAVONDA: Are you playing for the Pacers now?

- Yeah.

- SHAVONDA: I bet you can't dunk like I can dunk.

Watch out there.

- ♪

- LANDON: Oh!

- Whenever I look at David, it makes me really happy.

He's just a happy-go-lucky guy

and doesn't take life too seriously.

- ♪

- I'm going to sit here for a second

because M.J. and Ashley are fighting like little girls.

- What are they fighting about? - Girls, I don't know.

- SHAVONDA: Are you guys going out?

- I don't want to. All I want to do is go to bed.

- I truly did not think that having Ashley and David

up here at the same time would be that hard to deal with

and be that hard for Ashley to deal with.

Don't be mad at me.

- Mm. - M.J.: You are, though.

- I'm furious.

- M.J.: Whenever Ashley gets upset,

she really won't tell you and plays that little game.

"I'm not mad. No, do whatever you want to do,"

and I hate that.

If somebody's going to be mad at me, just tell me you're upset.

- ♪

- ♪

- She's the love of my life right here,

and she's mad at me right now.

- M.J.: I need some boy time. I'll be right back.

- I'd probably be pretty upset if I was Ashley.

His friend was just blowing through,

and Ashley had made time to come here.

Ashley took time off work.

Ashley took the extremely horrible flight.

You would think that

M.J. would hang out a little bit more with Ashley.

- M.J.: I just know the look that Ashley can get in her eyes

whenever something is wrong.

As beautiful as those eyes are, they can also just--

[cat screech]--like, pierce right through you.

She's upset, but she's the type of girl

who won't ask like she's upset. It's like this.

"Hey, baby. I'm not upset at all.

- M.J.: Thanks for coming up and seeing me.

- It just doesn't work very well

to have your buddy and your girlfriend in the same place.

- Let's go home. I'm going to walk you home.

- I'm fine. You don't have to walk me home.

- Shut [bleep] up. I'm going to walk you home.

- I go down the street and take a left. I'm fine.

- M.J.: I'm going with you, though.

- DAVID: I'm a grown man. - M.J.: I want to. I need to.

- ♪

- DAVID: Oh, M.J., this was so hard.

I'm so glad you walked me home.

- No, actually, I just needed to walk down and get a--

- [horn honking]

-- breath of fresh air.

- You do what you [bleep] can.

- I've probably gotten deeper emotionally with David

than I have with any other of my friends.

Even though we're athletes and supposed to be,

like, dumb jocks, we both have a good self-awareness,

and we both can talk.

- I'm not trying to be some,

like, sentimental [bleep] right now,

but, like, you can do anything you want to do,

and that's what makes me mad about you.

You don't realize that.

Even since I was a sophomore in high school, I looked up to you.

You're still, like, the definition of a great guy.

All I wanted you to do was make it because that's what you are.

- M.J.: David is a professional athlete now.

In a way, David almost feels sorry for me,

that I am not in the same boat that he is.

It's taken me over a year

to, like, realize that that's not happening,

and now I have to go down a different road,

and it's been the hardest thing in my entire life.

Football was my life, and that's really all that I knew.

I was totally dedicated to it.

When that didn't happen, it totally changed my life,

and so here I am now trying to really figure out who I am.

All right, man. I love you, dude.

- LANDON: Tonight, David was like,

"You don't even know."

He's like, "The M.J. here is nothing like the M.J. at home."

- I can see it. I can totally see it.

- LANDON: Well, I thought I've, like,

known M.J. pretty much the best and, like, can understand

where he comes from, but after talking to David,

it's kind of like I don't really know.

I went to M.J..

I'm like, "M.J., I just learned more about you in minutes

"on a taxi ride with David

than I've learned about you in the entire time I've been here."

- SHAVONDA: Damn. - I feel a little bit closed

out of M.J.'s life

just because of stuff that he doesn't tell me,

and I feel like we should be, like, the best buds.

I don't even know what to think because, like, I thought,

you know, like, I don't know.

- ♪

- ASHLEY: Hello, monkeys! - M.J.: They're spider monkeys.

I want to show Ashley a little bit of Philadelphia.

I really want to go out and just have time alone

where we can sit and talk

and kind of just catch up on what's going on in life.

- Kind of looks like me. - M.J.: You have those eyes.

You have feline eyes. I think you're

a little bit better looking than a cheetah though.

- I don't know. - A little bit.

Ashley had asked, you know,

if I had done anything more than kiss some girls,

and I told her that I have, you know, gone further

than I really wanted to go,

and it was something that made me a little nervous,

but she handled it well, and I've told her

that that's not going to happen again.

If I want to have a future with her,

you can't be doing stuff like that.

- ♪

- Got it. - Word.

Ashley does have to leave now, and looking back on the weekend,

it has been a really good weekend.

- Bye, Shavonda. - Have a safe trip.

- All right. - It was so good to see you.

- It was fun.

- I know.

- He'll be back before you know it.

- I know.

- Yeah. - I know.

- He'll be back sooner than you want him back.

- [laughs]

I'm sorry that some of this weekend

was hard for you, but--

- It was just stressful. It's okay.

- It was so wonderful to see you, though.

- I'm just ready for you to come home.

- M.J.: We did pretty much get in a little fight

because David was here, but I don't think

that it's hurt my relationship at all with Ashley.

It's just something that kind of put a damper on the weekend.

- [phone ringing] - M.J.: Hello?

- ASHLEY: I'm home.

- M.J.: I'm glad you made it home safe.

- ASHLEY: I wish you could have somehow talked to me tonight.

- Why? Why do you say that?

- ASHLEY: I just want to talk to you...

- Well, we haven't been able to do that

since we've been here, so--

- ASHLEY: I know that.

- Why are you worried about it now?

- ASHLEY: I just have some questions for you.

That's all.

- What is it? Is it bad stuff?

- ASHLEY: M.J., I'm not going to talk to you about it here.

- So I have to wait until I get home whenever I first see you?

- ASHLEY: [laughs]

- Well, that's going to be a real inviting way to come home.

- ASHLEY: Right, I know.

- M.J.: I just feel like at times with Ashley,

I can't get her to put as much out there

as I do in the relationship,

to really talk about issues or talk about problems.

- ASHLEY: Sorry, I guess I'm not as--

- No, but you're not sorry, Ashley,

but you're really not because this is starting to turn

into something that's, like, selfish,

and it's not fair to me. It truly is not fair to me.

- ASHLEY: Look, we're not going to get anywhere else tonight,

so I want to go.

- Well, then it sounds like I'm not getting anywhere

else tomorrow or the next day or the next day or the next day.

- ASHLEY: Please! I'm done.

I don't want to talk about it anymore.

I'm going to go. I don't want to talk about it.

- M.J.: As much as I want things to work out

between Ashley and I, I'm frustrated,

and I don't know what to do at all.

- I feel like I'm going to bed

with some unsettled business between Ashley and I.

- [phone dialing and ringing]

- ASHLEY: Hey, this is Ashley. - [machine beeps]

- Hey, Ash. It's M.J., I just got out of bed

and was calling to see how you were doing this morning.

I hope that you're doing better than last night,

and sorry if I got frustrated, but it's just hard.

Please give me a call when you get this.

- M.J.: That's all she says is just,

"Get home, get home, get home, get home."

- Yep. - And I can't.

- And now you can't talk to her to even figure these things out.

Ah, man.

- M.J.: It's just a very, very awkward situation.

I don't feel like Ashley is telling me stuff

that she needs to tell me as far as some of her feelings.

She just was like, "Drop it! Just drop it!

Don't want to talk about it right now,"

and I was very persistent about her saying it,

and finally I was just like--

There was no endings. I just hung it up.

- [Shavonda gasps] - So I brush my teeth,

and I go to call back, and she had turned her phone off.

Bad move by me.

- [phone ringing]

- ASHLEY: Hello? - Oh, my goodness.

I've been worried all day.

- ASHLEY: Well, first and foremost,

don't hang up on people.

That's just disrespectful. I mean, you just don't do that

to somebody you truly care about.

- I apologize for hanging up the phone.

I won't do that again,

but I was just so, you know, shaken.

- ASHLEY: I don't have bad feelings toward you.

It's just I want to get some questions answered

before I move on with someone. Do you know what I mean?

- M.J.: It's just beyond me,

and it seems like a selfish thing

on your end, and-- - ASHLEY: Whatever.

Uh-uh, no, don't even go there-- - --because see?

- ASHLEY: Don't even go there, though...

because I let you have your selfish time.

My heart was there four months ago, and I got a call.

- M.J.: I'm getting a taste kind of my own medicine

because I did it to her earlier on,

and now it's kind of hitting me in the face, and it hurts a lot.

- ASHLEY: Am I % with you? No, I'm not.

- Well, then it's either

all-or-nothing for me then right now.

- ASHLEY: Okay. Okay. Well, if it's all-or-nothing,

then I'm telling you that I'm not % there.

- Okay, then I'm not either anymore.

- ASHLEY: Okay.

- M.J.: Throughout my life in the relationships that I've had,

it's all comes down to,

like, my control over that relationship,

and if I feel like I can't control something

in a relationship, then I'm done with it.

I've never been around a person who can just change like that.

I did not see this coming at all.

I'm beside myself,

and I'm having to hold a to back in right now myself, too.

- ASHLEY: I'm going to let you go.

- M.J.: Okay, bye-bye.

To know somebody's going to be there whenever I get home

has always been my safety, and now three weeks left,

my safety net is gone, and it's scary.

- ♪

- LANDON: I think M.J. can feel that we've been growing apart.

We have not had, like, a time where we've,

like, communicated at all

about what's been happening the last couple months.

- M.J.: Landon? - LANDON: Yeah?

- M.J.: So tell me,

what are the issues that you have with me?

- LANDON: I feel like you give me half of who you are,

just by the things David has said,

just by things that you've said--

- Okay, what did David say? - He had told me,

"You don't know the M.J. that I know,"

and that's what's stuck in my mind.

- M.J.: The only thing that I haven't shown here is my anger

because I know if I do get pissed, it's bad.

Nobody here in the house really knows about me and my history.

I've never really had a friend where I'd tell them

everything about me. There's something

that I envy about you more than anything else,

and it's how into this process you've gotten.

I don't know. I just feel like I could have invested more.

I have to open up and let people get inside M.J.,

and I'm still learning how to do that.

- LANDON: I think you had a really good start,

and I think a lot of the Ashley stuff has backed you off.

What happened after she left?

- So she left, like, we were still talking,

but it was just kind of,

I could tell, like, something was wrong,

and I could tell that there was something

that she wanted to tell me or whatnot but--

- LANDON: But she wouldn't. - Wasn't willing to tell me.

- You've been in limbo -- weeks, dude,

where you don't know what's going on, where you're like,

"I don't know what she's feeling. She won't talk."

That's bull -- . So I just want you to be happy,

and I just don't feel like you're happy.

I think everything is kind of solved between M.J. and I,

and both of us can relax around each other a little more

because we understand each other more.
