17x23 - Regaining the Pace

SVETLANA: Martin feels this is the deciding factor of whether

or not we're going to be together.

His dad passed.

For him to say the things that he was feeling,

my heart just, like, crumbled.

Martin and I got over a huge amount,

and it's just bumps in the road left.

Picked to live in a house...

SVETLANA: I can't believe Martin's going to be here in the morning.

What time is he coming in?

:. I got to go pick him up.

I can't wait for Martin to come.

I absolutely cannot wait.

Every time I think about it I get giddy.

You're really nervous.

You don't want anyone to talk to him.

I don't want anybody to talk to him.

I'm afraid Tyler's going to be, like,

"Oh, I hear you don't like [bleep],"

or something like that.

He'll turn bright read. He blushes.

That's going to be funny.It's not funny.

Yeah, it is.

We've all sort of been anticipating this visit

from Martin for the longest time.

I'm curious to see

who this guy really is.

So what do you want for your birthday?

I know you want a marble cake.

With fudge on top.Uh-huh.

And then white lettering

and like white frosting lettering.

Why does the lettering have to be white?

Because I want some frosting, but I don't want too much.

So if the lettering's in frosting, it's not too much.

It doesn't overpower the fudge.

JANELLE: Me and Svetlana

have become closer over the past couple of weeks,

since our little talk.

And I'm trying to make Svetlana's th birthday

really nice and special.

So fudge all over

and then white frosting on top of the fudge?

The lettering has to be in white frosting.

And like, little, little like flowers on the end.

'Cause I want that little flower.

It makes sense.

Any other demands for your cake?

That's all I want.Okay.

PAULA: Dr. Covin asked me what I would like to accomplish

before I leave.

And the forefront of my mind is, I guess, establishing

a good communication with my parents

and kind of letting them know

that Keith still is in the picture.

If me and Keith are really going to be

a supportive healthy couple, I need to start

acting positively towards our relationship

and being more open about it

to people that really matter in my life.

I'm writing this e-mail to my mom

and I'm going to let her know,

you know, everything that's been going on.

"I'm faced with a dilemma.

"Don't give me and Keith a chance

"for the sake of my friends and family

"and then I'm sad and miserable,

"or I give him a chance and completely

lose the faith and respect of everyone that cares about me."

It felt like I was living like two separate lives.

I was so scared to bring those two lives together

that I kept them as separate as possible

because I didn't want to, like, let anybody down.

Once you click "send" it's like, "Here goes."

And, oh, my God, I'm actually doing this.

I'm actually going to send this to my mom.

And I don't know how she's going to react.

But I hope this is going to turn out okay.

She's tripping out about Martin coming. Why?

Because he doesn't talk about politics and all this stuff.

He's going to be like, "Huh?"

JOHN:"What are you ideas on foreign policy?

He doesn't know anything about it.

He doesn't know anything about politics.

SVETLANA: I'm very nervous for Martin to meet the roommates,

because Martin's shy and Martin doesn't like to talk a lot.

And my roommates love to talk

and love to spark our conversation

and love to just pick at people

and maybe make them feel uncomfortable.

JOHN:You are the least tactful person in this house.

If he can deal with your antics

I'm sure he can deal with ours.SVETLANA: I'm not like that--

around him-- we just fight.

[phone ringing]

And you are?

JANELLE: She's freaking out.

She feels like people are going to try to get into

an intelligent conversation with him.

Because he doesn't know politics, doesn't know religion.

Oh... So he's stupid?

[laughing]

That's cute. He's pudgy and stupid.

JOHN: You should just be, like,

overly flamboyant around him.

Right when he gets here just see how he reacts.

Go like this...Hey, Martin.

How funny would it be if I try and be as g*y as possible?

Every g*y stereotype that I can think of,

and try to display all of them at once.

Just to try and make Martin feel uncomfortable.

[laughing]

JOHN: No.

I should just put on an evening gown.

Oh, I haven't even put my makeup on, Martin.

You're making a fool out of me.

PAULA: I checked my e-mail the next morning.

And I'm, like, "Oh, my God, my mom already responded."

This is my mom's response.

She writes,

"Dear Paula, I ready your e-mail very carefully

"through misty eyes in most parts.

"I trust your judgment, Paula, and I know

"that you will make smart and sound decisions

"in this situation.

"I'm glad you're seeking help, Paula.

"There's nothing wrong with that in the least.

"I just hope we can be close and not reluctant to talk

"about any issues that come to mind whether it's good or bad.

"Also, always remember, Paula,

"I'm always here.

"I don't talk that much, but I'm a good listener.

"Love you always and forever, Mom."

The whole world lifts off my shoulders.

It's the nicest thing to be proved wrong

in this type of situation.

[dialing tones]

[distant phone ringing]

I ready your mom's e-mail.

Yeah, what'd you think?

Um, I think I love your mom.

Yeah, right?

I wasn't expecting that at all.

She's, like, "I'm mad chill, and I love my daughter."

So leaps and bounds today.

It's a great feeling to see somebody

after you've missed them for so long.

To finally see them,

it's just the best.

I'm, like, all scared.

I warned everybody. I was, like,

and, like, make me really embarrassed.

Before Martin arrived, Fitz made a point

I asked Martin his name, and that was pretty much it.

and I just kind of put my wrist out, just limp.

I don't know what he's necessarily

thinking about all this, but I'm having a fun time with it.

Svetlana made him out to be

some big six-foot three Russian model,

and he's maybe, like, five-, pudgy

and has a dry sense of humor.

And that's fine 'cause I'm not the one

who has to go have sex with him.

They're like Romeo and Juliet.

Martin is not what I was expecting.

I'm dealing with my parents,

I'm not hiding issues anymore.

It's like I have the strength to actually go home.

I went in last time and, uh...

it was nice.

He looked at my arms.

He's like, "You stopped picking it." I was like, "Yeah."

He's like, "Why do you think you did that?"

I was like, "Well, 'cause I stopped, like,

picking on myself."

It really makes me feel good to hear from Paula

that her doctor is noticing

all the progress that she's been making.

The thing is, it's so weird, is like,

okay, I'm doing this for myself, but...

I think the part that helped me realize how bad it got

was you guys. Yeah.

'Cause you guys saw it.

I needed to get around strangers

who weren't my friends who...

TYLER:Weren't gonna sugarcoat it.

Right.

They've seen the worst parts of me

and they have just...

backed me up time and time again.

Honestly, I think there's no going back, dude.

I think that when you got here, you were at rock bottom

and there was only up, dude, there is no more down.

And I think to the point that you're at now...

I don't think there is any way to go back.

Key West has, like, changed my life.

Like, I don't know where I would be without it.

Like, some people come here

and get lost.

And, like, I came here and got found.

Here I had to learn to like, pull somebody aside

and be like, "Listen..." like, I worked through [bleep].

It's not like I could just write them off,

I had to live with this person--

live, work, eat, breathe this person

and it's so hard. And I was miserable.

I was totally miserable until I could pull one of them aside

and explain to them, like, this needs to stop.

Well, I think this is the first real experience...

I've never been away from home, yeah.

So that's how we learn.

SVETLANA: It took me a long time to realize

that people are who they are

and you have to learn how to deal with people,

and you have to learn to step back and look at yourself

and evaluate your actions.

That was the negative.

What about the positive?

I can't believe I was able to be away from him for so long.

I think I grew up a lot.

I wouldn't take it back, that's the best part.

JOHN: Tonight is Fitz's birthday, and, um,

Janelle has taken it upon herself to

basically take care of all the cake and party preparation.

Janelle approaches me with a pretty good idea

about switching out cakes and kind of playing a joke on Fitz.

Don't put it out yet, don't put it out yet.

I'm kind of really waiting to see

Fitz's reaction when she sees it.

It's gonna be one of those situations

where you pretend to be really happy,

but in the back of your mind you're just like,

"What the hell am I looking at right now?"

This is what we'll do, dude,

"Happy birthday," and then she'll be like, "Oh..."

SVETLANA: That's a pretty card.

I'm not sure.

Today I'm .

That means that I am no longer a teen.

And it's a new chapter in my life.

When I first came here,

I thought Martin and I really weren't gonna make it.

We might grow apart, or just things might not work out.

And the complete opposite happened.

We became mature together

and we've grown together.
