02x02 - Episode 2

Post by bunniefuu »

LUDWIG: I've always enjoyed
looking for needles in haystacks.

14 whole days wading through
Sinclair's files.

You've found nothing out at all.

Why hasn't the station called?

Need you back in there.
That's where we need you.

Digging about, finding some facts,
for God's sake.

John Taylor, crime scene consultant,

DC Ethan Cole
and DC Caitlin Sullivan.

Hello. All I really need

is a little lanyard with
your publication's name on it,

and someone who's willing to say
I was on assignment.

Your mate was in here this week,
sat right there.

Russell Carter has been to visit
Adam Newsum.

How do you know that?

Because I've just visited
Adam Newsum in prison.

I was engaged, she died.

Her name was Mandy Ziegler.

All of Holly Pinder's computers
have been brought to the station.

The basement is now out of bounds
to all of us.

They're going to find whatever it is
we're looking for.

Our new consultant, John Taylor.

DCI Taylor's brother.
Identical twin brother.

Joanne Kemper, member of Parliament
for Cambridge St Michael's.

-Nice to meet you.
-She definitely knew James.

And she called Ziegler Ronan.

Did James mention a Joanne Kemper?

She's in the Sinclair files.

But this is absolutely ridiculous.

You may kiss the bride.

- AUDIENCE:
- Aww!

CHEERING

CHEERING

A little help, please!

In your circles, let's go.

LIVELY STRING MUSIC

MUSIC BECOMES OMINOUS

SHE SCREAMS

Hold on a minute!

When did you slip these in?

I put them in quite openly
in front of you.

Look at this. Page six.

I gave him an actual photo
of an actual suspect

being arrested for an actual m*rder.

That's me in the background. Look.

With an actual consultant
in the actual background.

Look what makes the front page.

Right.

That is quite a saving.

-Is it possible?
-Is what possible?

What it said in the Sinclair file
about Joanne Kemper, her family?

Well, no.

Are you sure?

"The ritual of human sacrifice,"

"carried out by each member
of the Kemper bloodline,"

"if performed once a decade,"

"guarantees the promise
of eternal life."

Pretty sure.

All right, I was only asking.

It's no more bonkers than
anything else that's been going on.

It's a lot more bonkers

than everything else that's been
going on. It involves magic.

OK, but she is in the file.

Ziegler is directly
connected to her.

And according to you,
she knew James.

Oh, she definitely knew James.

OK, so that's one, two,
three coincidences.

That's... that's a thing.

That thing, that's... that you...

What is it? What do you call that?

A statistically significant number?

It is, yes.

PHONE RINGS

Hello?

John, where are you?
Are you at home?

No, I'm in the car. Lucy's here.

-Hello, Russell.
-Hi, Lucy.

-He says hello.
-Yes, I know. I can hear him.

Has there been a m*rder?

Well, as a matter of fact,
there has. Yes.

In public, with a knife,

with over 30 witnesses
standing around in a circle.

And you need help with that?

Well, why don't you come down here

and you let me know
whether or not I do?

I'll text you the address.

What's that?

It's that thingy
you lot wear at weddings.

It's a cummerbund, sir.
It looks like he pulled it off

and tried to hold it to the wound
to stop the bleeding.

Which it did pretty effectively.
There's more in there than in him.

And the rest of it
is spilled at the feet of...

..30 witnesses,

all of whom somehow managed to avoid
seeing the actual crime

happening right next to them.

Lost in the music.

That's very poetic, Constable.

John, we might have to put a limit

-on how far I'm willing to drive you for a m*rder.
-Mm.

Ooh! Fancy crime scene.

Lucy! Wait... Don't... Ugh!

Stop... stop it!

Stop it! DCI Carter's coming.

What's he going to do? Confiscate
my camera? I know my rights.

Do you? What are they?

He's very photogenic, isn't he?

Now, we need an answer on
this little prison visit of his.

Can we not talk about this
while he's walking towards us?

He visited Adam Newsum in prison,
Holly's k*ller.

He's not supposed to go
anywhere near that case.

-I know that.
-So you're going to have to drop his name in subtly

-and see how he reacts.
-I can't drop names in subtly.

-You know I can't drop names in subtly.
-Anyone can drop a name in subtly

if they really put their mind to it.

-Afternoon, DCI Carter!
-Mrs Betts-Taylor,

were you just taking pictures
of my crime scene?

Not exclusively.

Right, I'll be off!

Have fun.

Don't worry. I'm sure I won't.

DC Cole, I do hope that's not the
m*rder weapon you're handling there.

It's a steak knife from the buffet,
sir.

There were dozens of them,
they were on every table,

and if the k*ller
didn't bring their own knife,

I'm betting they used one of these.

How do you know it's not
the m*rder weapon, then?

Sorry?

You don't, do you?

Well...

Just pop it in... there.

The odds are in your favour,
DC Cole.

I'm sure it'll be fine.

Unless you did it.

Victim's name was Owen Doyle.

Ex-partner of the bride.
Not on the guest list?

Yes. That much we have managed
to gather from them.

He just turned up
during the ceremony.

Yeah, and then this big

choreographed dance number
took place.

-What?
-Seriously.

All we did at my auntie's
was a bad Macarena.

This lot put on a whole
Highland fling right here.

Victim finds himself
in the middle of it somehow,

and by the time it's over,
it's m*rder on the dance floor.

-Nice.
-Thank you.

-Did you want to see the body?
-Not really, no.

Where are the suspects?

Having the worst reception
in history.

CROWD HUBBUB

Oh. Is anyone going to give us
any idea what's happening?

-Are you eating?
-Yes.

Didn't you just witness a m*rder?

Didn't everyone here
just witness a m*rder?

Look, that one over there
is drinking champagne!

Seems apt. Where did they get it?

Mum!

Well, which ones are the suspects?

You what? Who is this?

This is John Taylor,
crime scene consultant. Excuse me.

We don't have suspects, John.
We have witnesses.

Well, this is no good.
This is no good at all.

I can't work with this.
We need to whittle it down!

If he was k*lled
in the direct centre

of a choreographed dance number,

then the k*ller must have been in
the choreographed dance number.

So who here was in
the choreographed dance number?

Everyone.

-What?!
-Everyone.

Even the bride and the groom.
I told you, it was a whole thing.

-Everyone?
-Mm-hm.

But that's too many variables.

You can't have that many variables.

VOICES ECHO

Is it hot in here?

LOUD CRUNCH

John. John. John!

Sorry...

-Is he all right?
-Yeah, yeah.

It's just, uh, too many variables.

What an odd little man.

I take it you're not wondering
why we called you in any more.

-It is very much in my wheelhouse, isn't it?
-Yeah.

Oh.

-Wow.
-OK.

I am going to have to look
at the body.

Oh, no! It's a really horrible one.

I knew it would be.

Can I see the actual...?

Ugh.

That's definitely steak knife sized.

What? No. I'm sorry.

There's just no way
you can know that.

How tall was he? 5'11"?

And he was standing up, of course,

turning one way and the other...

..I would have thought,
trying to work out

why he's suddenly
in the middle of Brigadoon.

And then it must have come from...

Yes, I think so.

And it would have been... upwards?

Downwards?

Downwards.

k*ller was right-handed, over 5'11",

and is going to have
quite a lot of blood on them.

All of that, though,
is a complete guess, isn't it?

I like to think
it's a fairly educated one.

-Let's try it.
-Try it? What do you mean, try it?

John, what do you mean, try it?

HE CLEARS HIS THROAT

QUIETLY: Uh... Excuse me.

CLINKING

CROWD QUIETS DOWN

Oh. Thank you, Constable.

Right. Yes. Um...

OK. Would anyone who doesn't
have any blood on them

please raise their hands?

Seriously? I can't even see
if anyone's hand's down.

Would you raise your hand
if it's down?

Well, that didn't help.

-Everyone's hands are up now.
-Yes. Thank you, I noticed.

OK, then.

Um, if you're left-handed, lower it.

That's better. Now we're whittling.

We got rid of almost
a quarter there.

OK. Um, please lower your hands
if you're under six foot.

Oh, come on!
You're all under six foot?

ALL of you?

-Is that a problem?
-Well, it's not ideal.

Er... Oh. Um...

That's all. Thank you.

This one's really hard.

I think you're going to have
to take more statements.

-Have fun. -Yeah.
-Yeah.

OK...

DOOR INTERCOM BEEPS

DOOR INTERCOM BUZZES

HE SIGHS

SHE SIGHS

- ON INTERCOM:
- Hello?

Hello, package.

What is it?

Calculators.

DOOR BEEPS

How did you...?
You need a fob to get in here.

Well, you obviously don't, do you?

You put a picture of an actual
arrest of an actual k*ller

in the Spotted in Cambridge section.

Yes, because you didn't give me
an actual story to accompany it.

-You couldn't work it out?
-Where are my puzzles?

Yes, yes. Uh, he's rather
dragging his feet there.

I'm as frustrated as you are.

-I don't think you even know him.
-What do you mean, I don't know him?

That... That's... That's him there.

-That's Ludwig?
-Mm-hm.

He's also a police consultant.
I told you.

You do realise,

a professional puzzle setter
solving a m*rder

is an actual story, don't you?

Yes, yes, I know,
but you can't mention him in writing

in case his brother sees it.

-His brother? So, your husband?
-Yes.

It's a whole thing.
You don't really want to know.

No, I don't. Thanks for popping by.

So I'd like to do an expose
on Joanne Kemper.

She's our local MP.

I am aware. What has she done?

I don't know.
I haven't written it yet.

Can you help me get an interview
with her?

No.

OK. If I get one myself,
will you vouch for me?

When am I going to get my puzzles?

Soon. Soon.

-We good? All on board?
-Please leave me alone.

I'll be in touch.

These are from nine
different phones.

Everything we've got.

And not one of the dance.

Well, they were all dancing.

I'm not saying it wouldn't
have been blurry,

but it still would have been nice.

He is in the background
of one picture.

My Nana always said it takes
more muscles to frown than smile.

She was wrong. It takes fewer.

Mr Doyle was hardly likely
to be smiling at anybody.

Consensus is he was roundly hated
and banned from attending.

Oh, I see. So, as well
as everyone being in the dance,

they all had a motive too.

This just gets better and better,
doesn't it?

It's not even a puzzle.

Er, how is someone getting k*lled
in the middle of 36 witnesses

not a puzzle?

Correctly phrased,
it could be a riddle,

but you can't have a puzzle
with this many variables,

unless the high number of variables
are what makes it the puzzle.

But that's quite unique.

BRISK FOOTSTEPS APPROACH

Ma'am, we've got statements
coming from...

It can wait, DCI Carter.

It can?

My office. You too, John.

Do you want us there too? Or...?

I assume you've got work to do.

-Yeah.
-Yes, ma'am.

OK, then. Do it.

Clique here, isn't it?

Chief Constable Ziegler is on
official leave as of this morning.

-For how long?
-Well, given he hasn't had a day off in 30 years,

I can't even begin to guess.

Nor did I hear it from him directly.

I'm assuming this isn't normal.

No, John.
Taking an impromptu holiday

in the middle of a major internal
investigation is not normal.

-Do you think...
-I don't think or know anything.

..Holly had something on the
Chief Constable and they found it?

His leave is official.
He's on holiday.

With respect, ma'am,
you can't actually think that.

I can say it.

All this will filter through
the station now.

Standard gossip will follow.

You've been given a selective
heads-up here, for obvious reasons.

And if anyone brings it up,
you know what to say.

You do know what to say,
don't you, John?

Well, it sounds like
he's been suspended,

but in a way that doesn't make it
look like he's been suspended.

I presume I don't say that, though.

PHONE RINGS

Two secs.

Ziegler's been suspended.

How do I get an interview
with Joanne Kemper?

-What?
-What?

-Ziegler's been suspended?
-Yes.

We aren't meant to talk about it
or contact him.

But DCI Carter
keeps texting somebody

and he's gone really serious.

Have you dropped that name yet?

Now, what did you say about
Joanne Kemper?

-Are you avoiding the question?
-Are you?

No, I want to get an interview
with Joanne Kemper.

-Do you know who I should contact?
-How should I know?

Also, that sounds like
a terrible idea.

No, it's not. She's our main lead.
It's what James would do.

In fact, for all we know,
it is what he did.

Well, that's hardly a good sign,
is it?

Maybe she's got an office.
Might try there next.

Have you not been home yet?

Lucy, we've got choc ices
in the boot!

I've got to go.

Adam Newsum, drop it!

Oh!

-Lucy?
-Hmm?

Oh, no.

Steve.

Steve?

My friend, Steve.

Where are we going?

Bride and groom's room.

OK, two people, that's better.

That's easier.

Oh, for...!
What are you all doing in here now?!

Where are we supposed to be?

Aren't you the best man?

Yeah. I'm also Sienna's brother.

Nobody's confined to a room, John.

They can pretty much go wherever
they want.

We can even leave the country
if we wanted.

Obviously can't do that.

Oh, well.

I see you found the champagne, then.

Excuse me?!

Well, I do think
we should address that obviously,

as shocked as we all are
about what's happened today...

-..doesn't seem to be a huge amount of grief in the room.
-Ugh...

Is that fair to say?

Owen Doyle was a psychopath.

He made my sister's life hell.

My daughter was a virtual prisoner
of that man for two years,

and it took all of us
as a family to get her back.

- WHISPERS:
- Hey...

I met him when I was 18.

By 19,

he had me cut off
all contact with everybody.

Moved us halfway down the country.

I'm sorry to hear that.

I'm going to have to ask,
did he hurt you, physically?

-No.
-Does it matter?

No.

Hurt's hurt.

Hmph.

Did you know him at the time, or...?

Hmm? Um, no.

I didn't know any of them.

Me and Sienna,
we met a couple of years after.

Certainly knew him then, though.

He just never stopped.

Till this very day,
he never stopped.

Eight years.

- LAUGHING:
- Well, he's stopped now!

Babes, you're not helping.

Detective, the man was obsessed
and dangerous.

Not that any of your lot
ever agreed.

You reported him?

CHUCKLES DRILY

All of us have
at one stage or another.

Check your records.

There must be, what,
dozens of incidents

all filed away under "ignore".

And he was told, specifically by me,

that if he showed his face
here today,

it would be the last thing
he ever does.

Which it was.

Did YOU do it?

No.

Look, I just don't see how
anybody here could've done it,

and not one of us notice.

Yes! Thank you!
Isn't it frustrating?

Well, whoever it was,
I'd like to shake their hand.

Chances are, you already have.

So it's all true, sir.

The bride, the groom,
the best man, the parents,

they all put in reports on Owen
over the years. All filed.

They were followed up,
but no charges were ever made.

Well, that's going to look bad,
in't it?

Multiple warnings about
a dangerous individual

that eventually results in m*rder?

Yes, but it resulted in the death
of the dangerous individual, so...

Yeah, suppose that does take
the edge off a bit.

Plus they all fall into
that grey area,

with him just turning up places
and being visible.

Why? What was the point?

That was the point.

He needed her to know that
he would never not be in her life.

Psychological t*rture.

Unfortunately,
he still requires justice.

Yes. So, standard procedure
from this...

Well, wait a minute. What's that?

This? This is the choreography
for the dance.

-They all got sent one.
-It has instructions?!

What, you thought
they were just freestyling?

So... so these circles are people,
are they?

And the directions of rotation
they take,

with the adjoined arrows
showing where

they crisscross with the others?

And the victim
was in the middle here,

right where that happens.

Then these second arrows show how

they all pulled back out
of the centre again,

taking opposing sides to
where they started,

reversing rotation, and then back
to the middle again.

Is that right?

All I did was print it out.

It's a gear puzzle!
Or at least near as dammit.

Excuse my language,
I got excited.

These are gears, see?

No, those are people, John.

People, gears, it doesn't matter.

They're all just variables.

Can I have this?

Can you have it?

This is genius.

Gears usually just rotate, but
these rotate AND move in and out.

You'd better leave this with me.

So, he can just go home
whenever he wants, can he?

So you went straight to her office?

Yeah, tried to doorstop her
for an interview,

staked the place out all day.

Staked it out?

Yeah, you know, parked outside.

Nobody came.

A whole electorate office
completely closed.

Goodness knows where they were.
I don't know why we pay our taxes.

She was at a hospital, Mum.

-Meeting nurses.
-Oh!

Even so.

JOLLY ACCORDION MUSIC PLAYING

-Hello.
-Oh, there you are.

Look at this! They're all like this.

-What's...
-What?

Oh, that's called a ceilidh.

Isn't it awful?

Is that my laptop?

Yes! I managed to find that video
all by myself,

after I called the station
and they talked me through it.

Your password is ridiculous,
by the way.

You need to change it.

Sorry, what is this?

A version of a gear puzzle,
based on the dance.

In a gear puzzle,

there are multiple rotating cogs,

all of which move
in conjunction with each other.

That's not right.
Go back the other way.

There are literally
hundreds of computations,

but only one that places
each and every gear

at the precise rotational angle
to solve the puzzle.

TRIUMPHANT JINGLE

Yeah.

All of these circles are dancers,
our gears,

turning in unison with each other.

All of the dancers
have a field of vision,

marked with these little Xs,

which changes continuously

as they rotate both clockwise
then anticlockwise,

whilst also repeatedly

collecting in the centre here

before spreading back out again.

They do that eight times in total

and on one of those eight occasions,

everyone's field of vision

must have wound up facing away
from the victim.

Everyone's...

..apart from our k*ller's, that is.

TRIUMPHANT JINGLE

Oh! Er, sorry. This is the wedding
m*rder from this morning.

I... I probably should've said.

Aren't there
quite a lot of variables?

There are quite a lot of variables!

But they're a lot easier to handle
when they're not in person.

John, has it ever occurred to you
that Ziegler's suspension

might have nothing to do with
Sinclair, or Holly's files?

Wait, Ziegler's been suspended?

I told you that, sweetheart.

No, you kept on about interviewing
Joanne Kemper.

You interviewed Joanne Kemper?

I WILL interview Joanne Kemper.

Please don't interview
Joanne Kemper.

What if Ziegler's suspension
is because of you?

I mean, think about it.

Ziegler is a Chief Constable,
who can suspend him?

Chief Constables are suspendable.
Even he answers to someone.

Yes, of course he does.

But... but he's on her side.

If there is a side and she's on it.

Ziegler took you to her house.

She thought you were James,
still might for all we know.

Next day, Ziegler's gone.

That is three...

..coincidences.

You're getting a bit free and easy
with those.

It doesn't make sense, Lucy.

If Ziegler's in her pocket,

the last thing she'd want is him
out of the picture,

particularly with the Pinder enquiry
going on in the basement.

Wait, I thought you were going
to try and get in there?

I'm still working on that.

I thought you were going to drop

Adam Newsum's name
in front of Russell?

I'm still working on that too.

Solving this would probably help,

or at least put him in a good mood.

He's definitely out of sorts.

ACCORDION MUSIC

Oh, goodness,
do we really need the music?

Well, I'd rather not have it,
but what can you do?

MUSIC MUTES

Oh! Thank you very much.

So it was a match?

Yeah, it's not THE m*rder weapon,
but it's identical.

Just like John Taylor said.

He cannot have known that
from the wound.

No? He did.

What else did the pathologist say?

k*ller was around six foot,
probably right-handed.

So basically he got
three out of three?

Three out of three!

Steak knife, right-handed, six foot!

Obviously.

And unfortunately,
of no help whatsoever.

All night I've spent on this,

going through every computation
of every variable.

I've had, like, eight hours' sleep.

That's a completely normal amount.

Don't be silly.

I love this thing, it's brilliant.

A gear puzzle where the gears
don't stay fixed.

It's highly original.

-I should probably think of a name for it.
-Um...

Slidey Circles?

I'm not calling it Slidey Circles.

And here's the thing, it works.

It's actually 100% solvable

if we adjust a couple of
the starting positions.

Which unfortunately we can't do,
because they were where they were.

Which means?

Well, weirdly, it means that

there was no way the victim
could've been stabbed unnoticed.

In fact, it means the only answer
is that

none of this even happened at all.

Mmm!

All right, that's a bit of a problem
because he's definitely dead.

Yes, I remember, but that's still
what the puzzle proves.

What happened didn't happen.

Is it just me or is that quite
a cheap-looking suit?

Especially compared to the rest.

I imagine the dress code came
with the invite he didn't get,

along with the dance moves
that may have saved his life...

PHONE RINGS

Sorry. Ma'am.

Yeah, we're actually just at...

Ma'am.

Won't be long.

She didn't ask for you, John.

She might like to see me anyway.

Fair enough.

Hello! Hello.

Sorry, am I late? Early?

Um...

..I'm not sure, actually.
Who are you?

Lucy, Lucy Betts.

And you are?

-Hannah.
-Hannah! Her secretary...

-PA.
-PA. We exchanged emails.

We did? Um, what was it about?

Oh, I'm supposed to be interviewing
Joanne today, for the paper.

Which paper?

The East Anglia paper.

-The East Anglia paper?
-Advertiser.

It's just a profile piece.
No politics,

just a "get to know your councillor"
type thing.

What book would you take to
a desert island?

Who's your favourite member
of Take That? Gary, for my sins.

Just all the classics.

Right. Um...

It's just that I'm usually
fairly on top of the interviews

that she's doing, and this one
just seems to escape me.

That's quite all right,
everybody makes mistakes.

Is she here?

She's not, no.

Are you sure?

Joanne's in meetings all day.

Who with?

I'll tell you what.
Why don't you give me your card?

My card?

I can do one better than that.

I'm going to give you the card
for my skipper, Gareth Fisher.

Editor in chief.
We like to call him the skipper.

He can vouch for me.

Actually, he broke that theatre
m*rder story the other day.

Perhaps you read about that?

Um, no.

No, I didn't.

Sorry, what did you say
your name was again?

You have any idea what all that
stuff in the basement's about?

I do, actually, yeah.

-Well, would you care to share it with the class?
-Not really.

I'll tell you what
I heard today about Ziegler...!

What about him?

You don't know
what's going on in the basement.

Are you all right, Mr Taylor?

W-What? Uh... yes, thank you.

Er...

Are you?

What... what's this, please?

-A cummerbund.
-Ah, yes. So... so it is.

And... And he was stabbed
through it?

No, actually.

We think just about above.

I don't think so.

So that would mean...

..that...

..someone must have...

I see.

This is such a good puzzle.

What a complete waste.

The whole thing was just

a bog-standard observation test
all along.

It was the variables
that threw me, you see.

Are you saying you've solved it?

LOUDLY WHISPERS: Russell!

RUSSELL SIGHS

What are you doing here?

I didn't know where else to go.

They keep asking me
to tell them who did it,

but I can't without
demonstrating it first.

You get it, you understand.

I'm sorry, have you...
have you solved the m*rder?

John...

Who's that?

He's been brought in to oversee
the Pinder taskforce.

Don't worry about it.

Deputy Chief Constable.

I wasn't aware you'd be here.

John? John?!

Hmm?

Have you solved it or not?

-No.
-You just said you had.

No, I didn't, you did.

I said I need you to do
a demonstration first.

Can you come over and tell them
I need to do a demonstration?

OK, OK, OK.

Appreciate you want the legroom,
but do you mind swapping back?

Cos I need it exactly as it...
Thank you.

And then,
just hold those positions, guys. OK.

OK, they are all exactly back

where they were sitting
during the service.

Really?

They didn't need to be.

What...?

Hello!
Sorry to bother you all again.

I'm afraid it's another
quick round of "Guess Who?"

Ah, I used to be so good
at that game.

It's a children's game.

I actually did have
a much better one,

but unfortunately I...

No, fair enough.

JOHN CLEARS HIS THROAT

Would you all please stand up?

OK, stay standing if you're a man.

Almost half.

Go figure.

Since when did we know
the k*ller's sex?

About half an hour ago.

All right, let's go through
yesterday's questions again quickly.

Remain standing
if you had no spots of blood on you.

Remain standing
if you're right-handed.

And if you're over six foot.

Did your corpse doctor say
"six foot" or "around six foot"?

Around six foot.

Huh!

Looks like our k*ller's trying
to get off on a technicality.

I could make you all stand up again

and start incrementally
deducting millimetres,

but I do have a quicker way.

Would all the men
who weren't wearing a cummerbund

at the wedding
please stand back up?

Someone wasn't.

Who was it?

What the hell's he talking about?

What's that got to do with anything?

We've got loads of photos
of the whole day.

Unless you think you miraculously
managed never to be caught

front-on at any point, really would
be better to stand up now.

-What?!
-Mum!

Thank you.

By the way, you did miraculously

manage never to be caught front-on
at any point.

We've "Guess Who'd" our k*ller.

Shall I get him to confess?

I'll get him to confess.

Everyone was pretty shocked

when Owen suddenly appeared
at the ceremony,

but none more so than you,
I'd wager...

..given that he was already
supposed to be dead.

I'd arrived late.

About bloody time!

Everyone else was ready, changed,

out the hotel,
heading to the garden.

He was there.

He had a room.

Must've checked in late
the previous night, false name.

We just got into it.

DULL THUD

OWEN GROANS

I don't even remember doing it.

Only suddenly seeing him, realising.

Have you all gone mad?

My brother did not k*ll Owen.

He was here, alive.

We all saw him!

I assure you, your brother
did k*ll him, Mrs Price.

Mrs Price...!

Sorry, it's the first time
I've heard it.

Sounds quite good.

There was just something of
a delayed reaction.

Mr Doyle's death could've been
avoided if he'd sought out

medical assistance, of course,

as any normal person
would have done.

But our victim's priorities were

very far from normal.

I don't think dying

was on his list of
planned activities for the day.

I... I really do believe
he thought he could do all this

and still walk away alive.

Unfortunately, there's only
so much blood a cummerbund can hold.

WEDDING GUESTS CLAPPING

Owen Doyle didn't get
the dress code,

or indeed the dance moves.

He had no cummerbund,

didn't realise it was required
and quite frankly,

didn't have a suit
that complemented one.

The cummerbund could only have
belonged to the k*ller.

The best man, Aiden Mooney.

Yeah, we know. He just confessed.

Well, good.

It's interesting, but if just
a couple of you had had

different starting points, then
it actually could've been possible

for someone to have been
k*lled mid-dance, unnoticed.

And so the puzzle does
actually work.

Though, of course, it turned out
to be hugely irrelevant.

AIDEN SNIFFS

I had one hell of a speech
prepared for you guys.

Stories, jokes.

Apologies.

For everything.

For letting that man...

Aiden.

That wasn't your fault.

That wasn't any of your fault.

I just wanted to toast
a new life without him.

We will toast a new life
without him.

-Come here.
-I'm sorry.

AIDEN SOBS

-It's all right.
-I'm sorry.

OK. Are we done pausing our arrest
for a toast, then?

-Yep.
-You're going to make someone a lovely best man one day.

I will. I will, actually.

-Good work.
-Thank you.

Russell, are you all right?

Yeah, yeah. It's just, er...

..weddings.

Oh. Of course.

I... I hadn't even...

Your... your fiancee.

You know, it's almost been a year.

Um, I've never actually asked,
but...

It was a car accident.

I'm so, so sorry.

Thank you.

John, do you know where
her father is?

Her father? Chief Constable Ziegler?

No? Why would I?

-He's probably just at home.
-He's not.

He's not answering my calls.
He won't reply to my texts.

Was it the same with your brother?

My brother walked out on his family.

John, let's not pretend like you're
not still looking for him, OK?

It's a puzzle.

You're still looking.

So what's Ziegler's connection
to it all?

JOHN CLEARS HIS THROAT
I... I don't know what you mean.

Connection to what?

All of it, John!

I am a detective, you know?

Your brother, Ziegler,
Holly Pinder, Adam Newsum.

-Ahem! Sorry, who?
-Adam Newsum?

The man who briefly framed
your sister-in-law for m*rder?

Oh, that guy!

Ah, no idea.

Seems fairly random to me.

Random to you?

Fairly.

PHONE RINGS OUT

-Yeah?
-Hello! It's me again.

Of course it is.

Um, I've got an email about you
from a Hannah Foster.

Great.

Yes, that's Joanne Kemper's PA.
What does it say?

I haven't read it.
Where's my puzzle?

Yes, it's coming.

You need to vouch for
whatever she asks for.

Does she say anything
about an interview?

Well, hang on, um...

..just refreshing my inbox.

Errrr...

No, still no puzzle.

Er, yes! Give me ten minutes...

Hello?

-Give me a puzzle!
-Sorry?

A puzzle, a puzzle, just quick.
A puzzle?

Puzzle? Er...

-Here.
-Yes! Great.

Ooh! This is your
wedding m*rder thingy.

No, it's an actual puzzle
based on it.

A complete original, and it works,
the instructions are on the back.

Great. What's it called?

Slidey Circles.

OK.

They'll probably love this.

-Who will?
-The Advertiser.

The what? No, no, no, no, no!

Give it back, please.

Ooh! Argh!

Lucy, that puzzle is a unique,
bespoke, first of its kind.

-Broadsheet only! Give it back!
-No!

You're being...
Whoo, you are being such a snob.

This is going to get me
an interview with Joanne Kemper.

I don't want you to have
an interview with Joanne Kemper!

-Yes?
-She's on the TV.

-What?
-Joanne Kemper is on the TV.

Oh!

It's not even a case of changing,

it's a case of showing
that we've changed.

Which as you know, is one of our
main party pledges across the board.

But for me, here in Cambridge,

holding the same seat that my father
held, it's even more personal.

Well, that can't be good.

What can't?

That!

Don't prod my television.

Sorry.

That man there is running
the Holly Pinder taskforce,

as of this morning.

What? Who is he?

Ziegler's replacement, and Kemper's
personal security liaison.

Well, that can't be good.

I know, that's why I said it.

This has gone way beyond
statistically significant

numbers of coincidences now.

Every thread leads to this woman.

She IS the mystery.

Nice to finally give it a face.

OK, but what actually is it?

I don't know, but it's cost
the lives of at least two people

and caused the disappearances
of two more.

Your father, and unless I hear
otherwise, Chief Constable Ziegler.

Russell thinks I know where he is.

-What?
-Maybe he thinks I know where both of them are.

He dropped the name in the end,
Adam Newsum, like an Acme anvil.

How did you react?

Appallingly!
It was a complete disaster.

He knows full well that
we've been digging.

I don't think he's going to tell
anyone, though.

Well, what does that mean?

Well, at bare minimum, it means
we need to be more careful.

Yeah, that's not really our style.

I really need to get that interview.

You see what I mean?

I think she can do it.

We're going to need to
come up with some very specific

and very camouflaged questions.

You... you can't just start
dropping names there.

Oh, no, I've gone off that whole
name-dropping strategy in general.

-Can you actually get this interview?
-I don't know.

How good was the puzzle
that you gave me?

Far too good for the Advertiser.

Dad was afraid of her.

He had to be.

Of what she was capable of doing,
to him and to us.

Who actually is she?

That's precisely what
we need to find out.

Tiffany was Queen Bee.

Millionaire by 25.

She turned 30, she retired.

CHEERING

It's just time for me
to find Tiffany again.

They were paid friends.

If you're meeting your blackmailer
in a secluded location at night

and you're still in your heels,

you're not frightened
of your blackmailer.

Scholar's Fountain.
Camera only covers half of it.

Body was found in the half
it doesn't.

I need you to take a photo of

It's not a puzzle.

-Feels like one.
-It's not.

-I got my interview.
-Argh!

I thought that was you.

It's my job to vet those
who interact with Ms Kemper.

-Are we in danger?
-She's not going to pull out a g*n

and sh**t me while
I'm interviewing her.

I'm hoping there's a limit to

the number of people you can
effectively make disappear.
