[hospital monitor beeping]

{\an8}[woman] Will, can you hear me?

{\an8}2 YEARS EARLIER

{\an8}[man] Let's go. We should let him rest.

[nurse] He was very lucky.

[Will] That's what
I kept hearing around me.

- "He was very lucky."
- [woman] Will.

[Will] I didn't know where I was,
or what had happened.

- [woman] Will.
- [Will] Just that my whole body hurt.

- Oh, sweetheart.
- Mom.

Tom! Tom!

- He's awake!
- [Will] I'd finally woken up.

[mom] Tom.

[Will] But things
were only going to get worse.

{\an8}HOURS BEFORE THE DISASTER

[both moaning]

[phone buzzing]

- Don't you think we should get that?
- It's my girlfriend.

She probably wants
to wish me a happy birthday.

- Really?
- Yeah.

- Happy birthday!
- [chuckles]

[Will] f*ck.

Do you want to answer it?

She's super-nice.

Okay, I'm gonna answer it. Hey, Elena!

Cut it out!

[Will] I know what you're thinking.
That I was a total as*h*le.

{\an8}But I'm not going to hide anything.
Please just listen to what I have to say.

{\an8}[man on TV] The Perseids,
a remarkable meteor shower…

{\an8}[mom] Will!

{\an8}[sighs]

{\an8}[man on TV] You can usually see them
around the same dates…

Ah, the birthday boy!

- Happy birthday, my love!
- Thanks.

- We thought you'd sleep here last night.
- Last-minute thing.

You'll be here for the Perseids?

No, I'll pass.
I'm seeing Juan and the guys later.

{\an8}[Will] I used to live my life
without worrying about consequences.

{\an8}Assuming that everyone would just
forgive me no matter what I did.

THE MAP OF LONGING

[phone buzzing]

[groans]

[sighs]

[phone rings]

[Elena] Finally!

- Happy birthday, my love!
- [chuckles]

Thank you , sweetheart. How are ya?

Are you still in bed?

You're unbelievable. I've been
calling you all day, you know?

I know. I'm sorry, honey. It's just that,
I was busy with my parents and then I…

- Look, I'm sorry.
- It's okay, love.

- We've got to make some decisions about--
- Sweetheart. Honey, I'm sorry.

Sorry. Look, the guys are waiting for me.

But I promise you I'll take care
of everything next week, okay?

- Fine.
- And I'll cook for us.

- I love you.
- Me too.

[call disconnects]

[exhales]

- Hey! Come on, man! Come on!
- [dinging repeatedly]

[man] Coming, as*h*le!

- Tucker! There's the birthday boy!
- Hey! [laughs]

Happy birthday, man! What's with
the beard? You look like a homeless guy.

- Does Elena like it?
- What?

- At least I'm not going bald! Huh?
- Shut up! Cut it out as*h*le.

Whose car is this?

Your parents?

No f*ck' way.

No way, holy sh*t! You gotta
jump into a car like this feet first!

If you scratch it,
I'll knock your teeth out.

Don't be such a k*ll joy.

And if you step on it again,
I'll cut off your feet.

- Come on, just shut up and start the car.
- [laughs]

Will, this car is f*cking amazing, dude.

But I don't know if you noticed that
you can't fit a kid's car seat in here?

No way. His other car was awesome too.

Yeah, but the other one was a little
too basic for Tucker, wasn't it?

Haven't you seen
the mobster penthouse he bought?

- [man] No.
- No?

- How do you know about that?
- Holy f*cking sh*t.

- Your girlfriend's been posting pictures.
- Holy sh*t! Tucker, that's nuts!

Since when do you
and Elena follow each other?

Since we hooked up
one New Year's Eve. [laughs]

Sounds like wedding bells, huh?
We're gonna have a party!

Hey! Tucker's already got everything
perfectly planned out, doesn't he?

Fancy apartment, check. Girlfriend, check.

Sick car, check.
It's all check, check, check, check.

Which is why I'm not
still living with my parents.

[man] Ooh.

[man] Ah! [laughs]

- This is gonna be awesome.
- [man] Gema's coming too.

Hey!

- What the f*ck?
- What's wrong?

Don't light up that joint in here.

Hey. [laughs] What the f*ck
are you talking about, man?

[brakes squealing]

I told you not to light that.

Fine, I won't light it.

Dude, what's up with you?

What's up, man?

- [indistinct chatter]
- [upbeat music playing]

You're not drinking anything, Tucker?

I'm good. I don't want any. What is it?

That your car? Hey there, kid!

That car there, is it yours?

Yeah, something wrong?

How much did it cost?

- Quite a lot.
- [chuckles]

You know they ripped you off?

Because it's just sheet metal.

- Only good for picking up.
- [scoffs]

Yeah, but I don't need a car to get laid.
Then why'd you buy it, you f*cking loser?

Because only a loser
would buy a car like that.

I bought it because I like making
assholes like you jealous.

Hey, what's going on?

Nothing at all, man.

Whatever.

Seems like you came here to show off.
So let's race, huh?

What kind of car can you possibly have?

Mine's normal but it goes f*ck' fast.

- It's a real car. Not one for losers.
- [chuckles]

- Really?
- Uh-huh.

- I'm gonna make you shut the f*ck up.
- [laughs]

- This guy's just an as*h*le.
- Come on,

we're racing with this f*ck' loser
in the fancy shirt!

[all cheering]

[engine revving]

[Will] I should have thrown him out of
the car with all my strength right then.

[Juan] Step on it, come on!

Faster, Tucker! Step on it!
Come on, we've gotta get ahead!

Go, go! Yes, yes, yes, yes! Come on, yes!

Come on! Tucker, come on!

- Whoo! Yeah! There you go!
- Whoo! Yeah!

Come on, man! You've got this!

[both yelling excitedly]

- [horn blaring]
- [both screaming]

[boy] Look, Dad, another one.

- But, aren't they stars?
- No.

They're just particles.

They're coming from a comet
that's passing by.

And, does it happen
every year on the same day?

Yeah. The exact same day.

They come to wish you a happy birthday.

[crying]

Darling.

[chuckles] Don't move sweetheart.

You could get dizzy.

What happened?

You were in a terrible car accident.

On El Pinar Road.

[grunts]

[Tom] Careful, now, don't touch it.

Do you remember what happened?

[mom sniffles] They put you into
an induced coma because of the crash.

They took out your spleen and…
they had to do an operation on your leg.

[Tom] You were so lucky, son.

I'll go find the doctor.

[crying]

[Will] And Juan?

- Is he okay?
- [sighs]

He was with me.

No.

What?

What happened?

The paramedics
weren't able to help him, Will.

He was dead when they got there.

He wasn't wearing his seatbelt.

[mom] It wasn't your fault, honey.

[Will] Of course it was my fault.

All I could think about was Juan.

About all the things
we would have done together

and what he would never get to accomplish.

It was like he was always by my side.

- [Elena] Do you like this color?
- [Will] I was supposed to move on.

- This sink is suspended.
- [Will] But I couldn't.

I couldn't even cry.

I had no right.

- Why the f*ck hadn't I died?
- What's up, man?

How are you?

[Will] Despite it all, everyone
kept telling me how lucky I had been.

[woman] You've been very lucky.

And thank goodness
you hadn't been drinking, Will.

That's why they didn't ask
for a pre-trial detention.

But either way, we have to reach
an agreement before the trial.

By the way, the lawyer said Juan's family

want an apology from you
as one of the conditions.

An in-person apology.

No. I can't.

You're going to have to.
Otherwise there won't be any agreement.

- They can ask for what they want.
- I won't be able to look them in the eye.

[Elena] Can I come in?

Sure, come in. I was just leaving.

- Hi, Patricia.
- Hello.

Hi, sweetie.

Try to get some rest, okay?
And don't worry too much.

- We'll figure something out. Bye.
- [Elena] Bye.

How'd it go?

The, uh, bathroom's looking really great.

I think you're gonna love it.

- Look.
- No, no, no. No.

I can't keep doing this, Elena.

- But everything's nearly fini--
- I don't mean the apartment.

I've been keeping things from you.

Some of these are from my birthday.
And a lot of other days, too.

You can see for yourself,
they're all time-stamped. Here.

[scoffs] Who are they?

What the f*ck is this?

[breathes shakily]

- Is this some kind of joke, or…?
- I'm not who you think I am.

- I don't want to keep lying to you.
- What are you talking about?

I wanna end things.

- What do you mean end things?
- I can't do this anymore.

Do what you want with the apartment.

I'll get Patricia
to take care of my share.

Will, what the f*ck is going on?

Look at me, Will! Goddamnit!

Who are you? I can't just…
What the hell kind of person are you?

I guess I'm just a fraud.

I guess so.

So everything between us was a lie?

God. You're a f*cking as*h*le, Will.

[crying]

[Will] That was the last time I saw her.

And the last time I did something shitty
to someone who didn't deserve it.

I also quit my job, quit the club.

And I broke all ties with
everyone I knew from college.

I hated myself so much that I had to
get away from anyone and everyone.

Especially anyone who cared about me.

I had hit rock bottom.

And then one day, someone showed up and
changed the way I thought about the world.

Someone you know very well.

Will?

Is that…

It is you! [laughs]

I can't believe it. Will Tucker.
Who else could it be but you?

[chuckles]

I'm sorry, who are you?

Oh, really, you don't recognize me?

Although, looking the way I do now,
I guess I don't blame you.

So, I'll tell you…

if you beat me in a game of chess.

No.

I'm not gonna play chess.

Okay.

Do you have something better to do?

[Lucy whooshing]

Check.

[mimicking car sounds]

[Lucy chuckles]

[Will sighs] So no one can beat you, huh?

- No.
- Right.

I'm known at this place.

Ah! You know, that is…

a bit of a clue.

No?

- No.
- Okay. All right… Mm.

I know that you love glitter. Hm?

And I know you really don't like

this stuff from Wales that's called
something, like, "Glamorgan."

And I also know you had
a bit of a hard time in school.

[chuckles]

Lucy?

- Lucy Álvarez?
- Yeah!

- Lu… Lucy Álvarez? No.
- Yes! Yes, it's me.

- This is…
- [sighs]

- Crazy.
- Yeah, very.

So then, what are you doing here?
What happened to you?

I don't know, you don't…

You don't seem like yourself.

[sighs]

Yeah.

No.

I'm not the same Will you used to know.

[Will] I met Lucy when we were seven years
old and I had just arrived in Spain.

We came because of my father's job,

and we lived in
a big house in the countryside

with a huge garden, and chickens.

[squishing]

[kid] Go take a shower, farm boy!

[teacher] Good morning, Merche.

- Look who we have here.
- Welcome, Lucy.

Why don't you sit next to Will?

See you later.

- Hi, Will. My name's Lucy.
- Oh, hi.

- Farm boy's got a girlfriend!
- [kids laughs]

[teacher] Sebastian! Tino!

I think you dropped this.

- Ah!
- [kids laughing]

- [sighs]
- What is that?

Glamorgan, it's a Welsh sausage.

What? I've never heard of Welsh sausage.

Mine's turkey. Wanna trade?

[Will] From that day on, Lucy and I
would always share our sandwiches.

[chuckles] And that way we shared
the disgust and the delight equally.

Told you.

What about half and half?

Here, Will. It's yours now.

If you put it up to the sun,
it looks like stardust.

[Will] I loved that pen so much.

I kept it for a long time.

Eventually, Lucy had a relapse
and then school became hell for me again.

What do you think?

Do you like it?

[Will] That was one of the reasons

my parents decided
to move us to a bigger city.

[mom] Are you sure
you won't miss the gardens?

Or the chickens?

Need help?

Take this.

[groans]

[boy] My little sister's better than you.

[Will] Since I was new,
I didn't know anyone yet,

and I could be whoever I wanted.

Well then, bring her down!
We can play one on one!

[laughs] She's six years old.

You're the new guy, right?
My name is Juan.

Will Tucker!

Wow! Your name
is straight out of a zombie movie.

[Will] Juan was a pretty typical kid
but no one ever messed with him.

Look, Tucker.

[Will] Sometimes he could be a jerk. But
if you were on his side, you were safe.

You've got to hold it here.

[ringing]

[Juan] Hey, you. Come here.

Come over here!

Don't act like you can't hear me!

[Will] At first, I would just pretend
to act like him.

What kind of sandwich is that?

Is it chorizo again, nerd?

[Will] But after a while,
I became exactly like him.

So what is it?

Mortadella? Gross!

[Will] I loved that everyone
finally respected me.

And as I got older,
I started to want more.

[dance music playing]

I studied Law, even though I spent
half of my degree partying.

I made lots of contacts,
and I became a new Will Tucker.

Oh, really?

[Will] And he was
even more of a jerk than before.

Hey there! Weren't you headed to Ale's?

No, it's dead there.

This is my cousin, Elena.
She just arrived from Madrid.

Hello everyone. Thanks.

From Madrid? Which part?

Shh. She's got a boyfriend.

I was only asking her about Madrid.

[cousin] Why are you even here?

- He's waiting to get into the club.
- You should ask your parents.

What? Not to let him in?

Don't listen to your cousin.
You can trust me.

[Will] Elena was the perfect girl to
start building a new, perfect life with.

Even if it was fake.

I haven't thought about things
that way in a long time.

[Elena] Hi, Mom.

This is Will.

- Will. Well, it's about time!
- Nice to meet you.

We were just having a drink with
some friends, Susana and Ramón.

They're members of this club.

Are you sure
the two of you aren't sisters?

[laughs] What a thing to say.

Oh look, here comes the boss.

[Will] Thanks to her parents, I started
working at a prestigious energy company.

Will.

[both] Nice to meet you.

[Will] Then we put down a deposit
on a penthouse in the middle of the city.

My future was perfectly mapped out.

Juan was right about that.

Then, it all went to sh*t.

- [horn blaring]
- [both screaming]

That must have been horrible.

So how are you feeling now?

Uh…

Like a piece of sh*t.

I k*lled my very best friend.

But you're not a m*rder*r.

- [scoffs]
- No really, I'm serious.

I mean, technically,
you might be a k*ller.

[scoffs]

I forgot about how honest you always were.

Good people deserve to hear the truth.

And… And you?

Why are you here?
This hospital isn't near your house.

Yeah, well, I'm participating
in a clinical trial.

So I came here with my mother.

They've got me on
some of the really good sh*t.

[both chuckle]

- What a duo.
- Oh, yeah.

[sighs]

I don't know. Maybe you could…

make this into an opportunity

to find the old Will again.

The one that I knew.

And then, think about the future.

I don't really want to think about it.

Yeah, well, you're lucky to be able to.

[Will] We used to see each other
almost every day.

[exhales sharply]

Hello.

Today's session tired you out, huh?

[Lucy grunts] Yeah.

Yeah.

I got you something.

What is it?

Let's see. [strains]

I'm kinda nervous.

I even bought one for myself.

Of course you bought one for yourself.

[gasps]

It's amazing.

Thank you so much.

Do you wanna play a game?

Yeah, cards. Not chess, you'll beat me.

Fine, we can play cards.

Did they take away your driver's license?

I don't have to hand it in
until the trial but…

Whatever. I'm never gonna drive again.

My sister always says that.

Actually…

you're both pretty similar to each other.

- Oh yeah?
- Hm.

In what ways?

I don't know,
the two of you are both a little lost.

Waiting for life to happen.

I'm not waiting for anything.

- Greta says the same thing.
- I'm not.

When she was really small,
she'd always… She would wait for me.

And see what I wanted before
she would order, you know?

Like when we'd eat at a hamburger place

or with presents
or even with our costumes.

One Halloween, you know, I went as
Wednesday and she went as Thing.

- Yeah. It was very cute.
- I hope you've got a photo.

My mother has photos somewhere.

[sighs]

Greta's truly my favorite person.

You've got to meet her.
She was here this morning.

I'm not in the mood to meet anyone at all.

I'm not in the mood to be nice
or make small talk or answer questions.

I'm not ready for that.

No. You don't have to do
any of that with her.

But I totally get it.

[sighs]

It's nuts, you know,
they conceived her just to save me.

[Lucy] Mm.

Hey, can I show you something?

[exhales deeply]

Are you sure we're allowed up here?

It's VIP only.

I always look for places
that don't feel like a hospital.

What do you think happens when we die?

Nothing.

Will, don't say that
to someone who's immunocompromised.

I'm sorry.

No. I mean, yeah.
There's something out there.

Yeah, for sure.

You know, I think that after we die…

Or at least when you start getting closer
to the end of your life…

You see your whole life,

sort of like a movie and, um…

you see the meaning of everything
and you can leave in peace.

Huh.

And there's… there's a part of you
that leaves but there's another…

another part that stays on earth
with all the people that…

loved you and stays in the places
and things you loved.

You would make a very good therapist,
you know, Lucy.

What do you think?

I think that would've been nice.

It would be.

That's the right tense, just so you know.

What would you like to study?

When you get out of here?

Even if I get out of here,
I'll have to come back.

There's no cure for what I've got.

Okay, sure. But, in the meantime,
you've gotta do something.

Well, what do you think you'll do
when you get outta here?

Keep visiting you.

[Will] When they discharged me,
I came back here.

- Thanks a lot, man. I'll see you tomorrow.
- Thanks.

I bought the camper van
and got the job at Zinrock.

I think that subconsciously,

I did it because I couldn't
stop thinking about what Lucy said.

I wanted to find
the version of Will she used to know.

I went to see her whenever I could.

When do you go home?

It's close for me now, too.

I don't think it'll be long.

Have you heard anything about your trial?

My lawyer says these things take time.

And she's trying to settle with them

but I'll have to apologize
to Juan's parents.

Then why don't you?

Because it's impossible.

You can't just apologize
for something like that.

You apologize for being late,
not for k*lling someone's son.

Well, I think I would still
like to apologize… to my family.

Wait, for what?

Uh…

For basically having ruined their entire
lives. But I can't really do that either.

Because I know that what's wrong with me
isn't my fault.

I understand.

[sighs]

I want…

I wanna ask you something, Will.

The clinical trial isn't working and--

[scoffs] They could try something else.

Couldn't they?

[sighs]

No.

[sniffles]

It's just… It's just…

Everything is coming to an end
and it's okay.

I'm very tired.

Don't visit me anymore.

What are you saying? No.

Will, I don't want you
to go through this. It's too hard.

- Let's play another game.
- No.

You start.

I'm being really serious.

Will you respect my decision?

I still haven't seen
your Halloween photos.

[chuckles]

Well, I can send them to you by mail.

It's just that
I don't get mail at the camper van.

[sniffles]

Well, I'll find a way, then.

If you wish.

Do you want to go up on the roof?

No, I'm feeling cold.

Yeah, it's cold out there.

Uh…

If you need anything, call me, okay?

We could play a game, talk, not talk.
