because I feel like so much
of who I am is Texas Tech.

My dad was the first
in his family

to get to go to college

because of a football
scholarship at Texas Tech.

I met my wife at Texas Tech.

I owed it to Texas Tech

to give back
everything that I could.

West Texas
is all about hard work,

toughness, taking risks.

You know, it basically
is the game of football.

And those are
the best people in the world.

They're salt of the earth.

They deserve greatness
in all aspects.

They deserve great sports teams.

They deserve
to be able to go out

and watch the Red Raiders win.

So I'm all in.

and he said, okay, let me tell
you how this is gonna work.

We need to set up an NFL
in college football.

he's really pushing the envelope

of everybody at Texas Tech.

We have the best facility
in college football.

We're sharing at the highest

And because of that,

we can win in

the last two years
that I spent at Cincinnati,

learned a lot,
loved my experience.

But like I said, I think I
thought it was time to move on.

We have a really good
quarterback in Will Hammond.

to do everything I can

to lead this team
to a national championship.

There's something different
about being in Texas.

We really hadn't been
to Lubbock much.

And then, you know,
when we finally came out here,

you know, obviously,
kind of fell in love with it.

And it's been nothing
but great ever since.

The state of Texas alone
is just a great state.

Obviously, a little biased,

but I think it's
the best state out there.

And, you know,
it's good to be back.

And, you know, growing up there,

you're always going to
football games Friday nights.

And then whenever you do
finally get to play in 'em,

it's like a dream come true
for, you know, a little kid.

You know, as you get into
high school, you turn 18.

Right up the road,
there's Winstar,

and you're able to go
play a little blackjack

with the fellows
at, you know, at 18 years old.

All you do is talk about it,

and then you finally
get to do it.

So definitely,
definitely fun times

and good memories growing up.

But being a Texas kid,
it's always been a dream of mine

to play, you know,
at a Texas university.

So being on the right side

of a home game at Texas Tech

and having all those fans,
you know,

backing you up
and supporting you,

really excited for that.

I think that's gonna be
a special environment.

isn't the only quarterback

to come to Tech
in search of greatness.

For almost 20 years,
this small West Texas town

has drawn talented players
like moths to a flame.

out in front of everybody else,

and then the rest of the Big 12

several pool lengths
behind them.

Tech has spent a lot of time,
money, and effort

assembling

a family-like culture here.

and, you know, he truly cares
about the players.

And there's such a connection
in that building.

McGuire earned his spurs
in Texas high school football,

winning three
state championships

and a place in the Hall of Fame.

He could have jumped
to college ball

long before he did,
but he insisted

on seeing his son
through his senior year.

And Coach,
who's this right here?

It's my son. This is my son,
Garret McGuire.

He spent five years as
an assistant coach at Baylor

before the job
at Texas Tech opened up.

Today, Texas Tech announced

it has fired
head coach Matt Wells

eight games into
his third year in Lubbock.

I think that this is maybe
the most important hire

that Texas Tech
is going to make.

They can't swing and miss
on this.

Texas Tech football
was in an interesting period

at that time.

The energy was low
within the program.

The confidence
of the fan base was...

you hesitate to use the word,
but apathetic.

And we knew
we had to have somebody

who could create
this level of excitement

and enthusiasm that was missing
from the program at that time.

Fortunately for Coach McGuire,

he had the perfect resume
for the job.

He coached my sorority's
football intramural team.

Yes, was the Zeta Tau Alphas.

We did think it was a long shot.

We did know a lot
about Texas Tech

because our daughter
had gone to school here.

And we pulled all the resources
that we could find

to just get him in the door.

I probably received


from Texas
high school football coaches

throughout the state.

And they were delivering
a message to me

to say, you need to hire
Joey McGuire.

I got the first interview,
and I thought I did really well.

And they called me back
for a second interview,

but they wanted to interview
Debbie, my wife.

Well, let me tell you,

I do joke around

that I was the closer.

[laughs] Yeah. They asked her
some questions,

and they were through.

And so she's walking out,

and she just sticks her hand up,

and she goes, "wreck 'em"
really loud.

g*ns up and just yelling
the whole way down.

I think
I was very assertive, firm.

We got this.

We're gonna start
this thing off right.

When I was younger,

I saw my brothers
playing football,

and I was like, man,
I want the costume.

What was Ben like as a kid?

The best word to describe him
probably is feral.

He and his brother,
they were always outside.

It was a hard time

getting him to come inside
to eat, to take a bath.

He started playing
in the first grade.

He had seen his brother,

going to his brother's
peewee football practices.

When they would do sprints
at the end of practice,

he'd get out there
and do sprints with them.

This is pretty sweet.

I got that for lettering
three years in a row.

That's at the Big 12 game

after, I think
that was after my second pick.

I haven't actually
taken it out of the bubble wrap.

We've got, when we played Cal,

Fernando Mendoza, beat him.

That's the, you know,
that's the Big 12 ring.

It's pretty sweet.

Ben is one of those guys

that puts himself
in a really good position

to make some big plays
on game day

because he is just so steady.

He just comes to work every day,
and he just does his job.
