Brendan Sorsby

is being investigated
by the NCAA

for alleged gambling

on college football
and other sports.

A star college football player,

who's expected to vie
for the Heisman Trophy,

is seeking treatment
for a gambling addiction.

some news coming out.

Our quarterback is going through
some stuff right now,

Brendan Sorsby.

He checked himself

into a rehab this morning
in Phoenix.

He will be there
for the next 30 days.

He has a very serious
gambling problem,

and it got to a point

that he knew he needed
to do something about it.

You know, I talked to him,
I talked to him this morning,

and he wanted me
to tell you guys

that he loves you guys.

And, you know, this is not
our story to tell.

This is his story to tell.

There's gonna be
a lot of things said

from a lot of people.

The world we live in
are really gonna love this.

Like, they're really
gonna, like,

thrive off of
other people's pain.

And that just is gonna make us

a stronger football team, okay?

When you guys chose
to come to Texas Tech,

you chose me,

and you've heard this
a million times,

you are stuck with me
for the rest of your life, okay?

And so this is a time

that that brotherhood
and that bond

and how much we love each other
and care about each other,

you've heard it a lot,

our superpower
is not how talented we are.

Our superpower is how much
we care about each other.

And whenever I tell you
I love you, I mean it.

I love Sorsby.

He's going through
some heavy sh*t right now.

I'm gonna be there for him.

Normally, Coach McGuire

would have every man
on the team laser focused

on conditioning
for grit and determination

in the relentless heat.

But with their star quarterback
suddenly vanished,

he's got a lot of fires
to put out.

It's been really tough.

The timeline was really crazy,
you know,

and everything happened so fast.

And we got the news
from the NCAA,

so we're working through that.

The world that we're in,
everything breaks so fast,

and things come out
on social media

and there's a race
to break news.

Reporter: Sorsby is under
investigation by the NCAA

for making thousands
of online bets

on a variety of sports
via a gambling app,

which jeopardizes
his eligibility.

Joey: When you're working
through a process like this

with the NCAA, you know,

this was not a situation
that Tech did anything.

And so you have to
support your player,

you've got to help him
work through the process.

Reporter: Joey McGuire releasing
the following statement

in a press release
this morning, saying, quote...

You know, I hate it personally,

but, you know,
on the other note too,

is my job is to field
the best football team

in this conference
and in this country.

And, you know, so I've
got to focus on the team

and focus on what's next
as I help different players

sort through different things
that they're going through.

Reporter: The school
said in a statement

he'll be taking
an indefinite leave of absence

while he seeks treatment.

Every sports governing
organization on earth,

not just the NCAA,

prohibits players from wagering
on their own contests.

That will get you banished

from every level of competition
anywhere on earth.

Since his freshman year
at Indiana,

he bet over 9,000 times,

$90,000 at least
in total revenue,

on just about everything
from college football,

including his Indiana Hoosiers

when he was a red shirt,

to ba*ls and strikes
for the Cincinnati Reds.

He clearly had a problem.

You have a gambling problem

if you are putting at risk
a multi-million dollar job

to bet on who's gonna eat
the most hot dogs

in Coney Island on July 4th.

So this is what
he got caught up in.

But these are clear violations
of the NCAA rules.

All right, guys, I just got out
of a meeting with Kirby.

Yeah, so there's been
an investigation

started by the NCAA
off of an anonymous tip

that Brendan Sorsby
has been involved in gambling

in his time at Indiana
and at Cincinnati.

From what they told me
in that meeting,

it doesn't look good right now.

If he did bet on his team,

that could lead to
permanent NCAA ineligibility.

I think there's a natural,
oh, my gosh,

the sky's falling
type of reaction.

It's a gut punch.

It's something that
it's hard to be prepared for.

When you lose a guy

that was the number one guy
in the portal,

lose a guy that, you know,

is gonna be a first round
draft pick in the NFL,

this is gonna garner
a lot of national publicity.

People are gonna be
talking about it.

Good Morning America
called yesterday.

I know Today Show called you.

ESPN has called.

Pretty much
my message to all of 'em

is like, hey, we don't know.

Like, there's not...

there are a lot of people
looking for information,

but there's just not a whole lot
I can tell you right now.

Where we are right now

is he's been declared
permanently ineligible

by the NCAA.

So after taking all
the evidence in that we had,

we immediately applied
for reinstatement for him.

We care about Brendan.

We're trying to do what's right
for this young man.

Everyone, the one thing
they can agree on

is that we cannot allow
gambling in our sports.

And so I think
if he's found guilty,

especially if he's found
guilty on the Indiana part,

he's probably going to be
declared ineligible

for the remainder
of his NCAA career.

If Sorsby's appeal
is denied by the NCAA,

the Red Raiders
will have to pivot fast.

That means all eyes

are now on backup quarterback
Will Hammond.

I always planned
throughout all my rehab

that, like, this would be
a big time for me.

And so, I mean, obviously
with all the news coming out

and more of that
kind of opportunity

falling on my shoulders,

you can only react to that
one way,

and that's just like,

you just step up to the plate,
you know what I mean?

At the end of the day, like,

if I went through
this whole process

hoping that this fall I could
just sit behind somebody,

then, like, I'd be doing myself

and, like,
my career a disservice.

I'd feel like I was kind of
wasting my time in a way.

But now with this
opportunity at my fingertips,

it's kind of just like, just...

just go run with it, you know?

Will's knee injury
isn't the only thing

standing in the way of his dream

of winning the QB1 slot
if it opens up.

At training in Dallas,

he's got to make up
for lost time

making throws
on the practice field

so that he can be ready
at a moment's notice.

And he cleared me
for everything,

jumping, cutting,

except for, like, 11-on-11 rush,

which I should get cleared for,
like, July 4th weekend.

There's no value in sitting
and sulking at anything.

There's no value in feeling
like you're a victim.

Setbacks like that are meant
to teach you something.

Clinically, he's ready.

Physiologically, he's ready.

Dr. Cooper's advice to him

was you need to change
your mindset now

from being an ACL patient
to being a quarterback.

with all the money

being thrown around now
in college football,

there's not a college coach

every opportunity
he's giving us,

trying to figure out
how he can be a leader

while the quarterback roster
remains up in the air.

It's definitely hard.

I mean, it's really stressful.

But as captain, it's difficult

because there's a lot
that's expected of me,

but a lot of it's like,
how am I gonna do this?

It's the weight that
I've put on myself from it.

I would say my role

is really just making sure
that everybody stays together

and not getting
in their own head.

Continuing to push
that mentality

of, hey, man, we're just here
to have a good time.

across every part of the team.

that he betted on games

in which he was
a member of the team

when he was on that team.

and I don't have to face
any repercussions for it.

You can't do this stuff.

There was a struggle
amongst the public

to differentiate actions
taken by Brendan Sorsby

and actions taken by Texas Tech.

And it all just gets
thrown in this blender

and poured out in the form
of Twitter headlines

and quick edit snapshots.

And that's the world we live in.

If you're Texas Tech,

when this drops on your desk,

the sinking feeling
has to be absolutely brutal.

It blew up overnight and
became a huge national story.

Texas Tech
got roasted pretty hard.

I got personally hit
pretty hard, you know,

and criticized a lot.

You know, a lot of people
don't recognize

or understand
the human aspect of it

and the fact that ultimately
our responsibility

is to look out
for the well being

of the student athletes
and really all of our students.

So you just
have to do your best to...

block out
is maybe the wrong word

because I do think
it's almost impossible.

You know, it's just...

everybody's on their phone
all the time nowadays.

All of our guys are on Twitter.

All of our guys
are on Instagram.

Like, they see this.

It's not like, hey,

we can just avoid
this noise completely.

You know, and it can get
pretty nasty

for some of these guys
on social media.

Any criticism,

anything that you see
that you might not like

because at the end of the day,
he's still our family friend,

and, like, our teammate.

Seeing people talk bad about him

makes us feel a certain way too.

You know, we've had
some shared adversity.

We've been probably
on SportsCenter every single day

for about three weeks straight.

And things come out
on social media.

And, man,
I love these guys, man.

I hate to see young people
go through things.

And so I also got to look
at the team as a whole

and see how we could use
the adversity to get better.

We are the Texas Tech
Red Raiders.

We are the most hated team
in the country.

I love it.

I love it.

We are now the hunted.

We're the hunted. Good.

We can be hated.

The NCAA denies Tech quarterback
Brendan Sorsby's bid

for reinstatement after
that gambling investigation.

This sets up next week's
court hearing

because Sorsby's
already asked a judge

for an injunction.

The NCAA denies Sorsby's appeal,

so he counters by taking
his fight to the local court.

He's seeking an injunction
that could allow him to play.

Brendan is gonna need

a very forceful
and creative defense.

His lawyer, Jeffrey Kessler,

the preeminent lawyer in sports.

Kessler won the landmark case
against the NCAA

that created NIL money
in college sports.

This guy wins.

College athletics
will soon change forever

thanks to a new pay structure,
$2.8 billion,

to settle a host
of antitrust claims.

This is the beginning
of the end for the NCAA.

Everyone in college football

knows the reputation
of Jeffrey Kessler.

Jeffrey Kessler does not
take on losers as cases.

He also represented Tom Brady
versus the NFL

in the so called
Deflategate scandal.

I think we put in
a very compelling case.

The money just keeps getting
bigger and bigger.

The late David Stern
said, quote,

"Your conduct, Jeffrey,
was routinely despicable."

And he called you, quote,

"the single most divisive force
in our negotiations."

I accept that.

Kessler makes the case
to the judge

that Sorsby has been diagnosed
with a gambling addiction,

which makes NCAA

removing his eligibility
ill*gal.

So I was very happy to have
his day in court for Brendan.

He deserves his day in court.

This case, I think,
has been badly misunderstood

by a lot of people.

It's very important
that everyone understand.

What this case is about

is when you have no threat
to competitive integrity,

but you have a mental illness
of gambling addiction,

which is plaguing,

plaguing student athletes
across the country.

The NCAA said in its policies
it would consider that.

It would support the athlete.

And instead,
they want to punish him.

That's wrong,
we think it's ill*gal,

and we hope
the court will agree.

Thank you.

This is the modern case
of young men particularly,

but all people.

Reporter: DraftKings shares
jumped 10% on Friday.

Wetzel: And the gambling apps,

which make it so easy
to bet so quickly,

and you become addicted
that much quicker.


in the United States

have a severe gambling problem.

I completely disdain

how much the betting apparatus
has taken a foothold.

I think that having college kids

have access to betting
on their phone is not great.

I don't think it's great

for the competitive balance
of the sport.

I think prop bets are insane.

You can even bet on games while
they're still being played.

Seriously.

Klatt: People get themselves
into trouble.

Reporter: During the first year

of legalized sports betting
in Ohio,

it saw a 55% increase
in calls for addiction.

Oh, yeah.

It hasn't been a trickle.

It's been a flood of this
into the market space

over the past
three or four years really.

And I think a lot of people
looked around

and said, man,
this was bound to happen.

Sports betting companies
spent over $430 million

on national TV ads last year.

It's just everywhere.

It is a huge driver of revenue

for media companies,

for leagues, for schools,

for everybody,
including players.

And it's just so easy.

I think I would have felt
a lot worse for Brendan

if it was one or two times
and clearly a mistake.

But the quantity of bets,

the quantity of money
went to another level.

We know the brain development
of young men particularly

isn't fully formed
to making great decisions

when you're 18, 19, 20.

And this stuff is just
everywhere on college campus.

Man, I'm a players' coach.

And what that means to me
is our players

are the most important thing
we have in that room

or in that building,

and they become
part of my family.

And I love those guys

and, you know, care about 'em.

And, you know,
when you start thinking about

some of the mistakes that I know

that some of the mistakes
I've made in my life,

even as an older guy, but
some of the mistakes I made

whenever I was


I got lucky that people gave me
a second chance, you know.

And I just want people
to understand

that I really believe
the best place for him

is to be at Texas Tech.

And I think we're the ones
that can help him.

We have the ability
and the facilities

and the people around him
to help him through this.

And so, you know,

the biggest thing,
no matter what,

no matter what the reason is,
at the end of the day,

if you said, what is
the best thing for him

mentally and physically
and emotionally,

the best thing for him
mentally, physically,

and emotionally
is to be at Texas Tech.

You say whatever...
whatever you want.

You cannot deny that.

The high stakes legal battle

is taking its toll
on the whole team.

Disengaging from the news
has become essential to sanity.

This was a big shock
to them too.

Can't imagine as a parent
how he feels, you know.

But anyway,
the question I have for you.

Not him playing or not playing,

how do you guys feel?

How do you feel
about all this going on?

I mean, I would say
it's a distraction,

but it's not something that we
could have done anything about.

-And then I love him.

he's a great human being.

I mean, obviously,
it shocked everyone.

It shocked me.
It breaks my heart, obviously.

But, I mean,
at the end of the day,

whether we have him or not,

we're gonna
have to move forward.

So I mean, obviously, love him.

I thought he's a great team guy,

and I'm expecting
to have him back.

But either way, we're just
gonna have to move on

and keep on doing
what we're doing.

You know, if he can't play,
we're gonna know,

and if he can play
we're gonna know.

have to have his back

because he's got a lot of stuff

that he's got to do
for just him,

his recovery, you know.

I mean, a lot.

When the quarterback
is missing in action,

nobody feels that uncertainty
more than the pass catchers.

That goes double
for Terrance Carter,

whose history with Sorsby
makes his experience personal.

Me and Sorsby's relationship
really started off

when we followed each other
on Instagram.

And, like, we've just been
talking to each other,

talking about how
we like each other's game

and stuff like that.

And when I found out
he was hitting the portal,

like, then and there,
I started texting him even more

just because, I mean,
I wanted him here.

And just knowing what
Texas Tech could do for him

as well as a person.

When he came in,
he got on campus,

like, I texted him instantly.

It was just like,
I'm ready to work.

Are you ready to work?

And we've been locked in
since then.

He's been gone, of course.

I still reach out to him,

still check in on him,
check on him mentally.

I text him.

I'm hoping they go through.

Sometimes they didn't deliver,

sometimes they did deliver it,
you know.

Because, I mean, his phone's on.

Sometimes it's off.

And I know he sees it.

He really didn't have his phone

for like 20-some days.

It was just him there rehabbing,
getting his mind right.

And then the day
he did get his phone,

he actually gave me a call,

and, like, he was all smiles.

It was just like he couldn't
wait to get back to campus.

And, I mean, that put
a big smile on my face,

me knowing
that he was fine, you know.

Because this game, it's not
just football, you know.

It's mentally.

You got to be mentally tough
to play this game too.

And every day we'll talk.

Like, him giving me that call

brightened my mood up
a lot lately

because, honestly,
with his skill level,

like, it could have took us
pretty far.

And I still have faith in it,
you know.

I know what Texas Tech
is gonna do for Brendan.

I know what
we're gonna do for Brendan.

We're gonna be behind his back.

So that's one thing
I can't wait for.

So hopefully,
we get him back this season.

Luckily... hopefully that,
you know what I'm saying,

the NCAA
doesn't go too harsh on him

and we do great things.

Every path eventually
leads to a reckoning,

a moment when
you're forced to confront

the decisions of the past.

he will suffer a probable,
imminent, and irreparable injury

if this court does not issue
this temporary injunction.

dealing with a lot of emotions.

You know, obviously,

the excitement
of getting the news

that Brendan, you know,
got his injunction

and was gonna have
a chance to play.

is he's not done
playing football.

Just kind of understood here
what the common goal is,

and that's
to go win championships.

We flashed each other a smile

and said, I think
we'll be all right.

Everybody on the outside
looking in,

think they know everything,
but they really don't.

Just knowing everything
that he's been through,

like, how hard he's worked,

like, I just want to make sure
that he's good in the head.

I know that
we can still go out there

and put up numbers
and be a great team.

necessarily thought

that he was gonna win
the injunction, you know.

I thought he did
such a phenomenal job

of coming into the building.

And he truly cared
about everybody.

And so I want to make sure
our guys learn from it.

So we're gonna continue
to learn from this.

to support him.

to get to what's next.

When the verdict came down,
it was a b*mb.

Not just Brendan Sorsby
gets to play,

but what does this mean

for the NCAA's ability
to literally enforce any rule?

The unified backlash that came
was overwhelming.

America hates Texas Tech now.

If Texas Tech
allows him to play,

I will crush them all season.

Now the ball is in Tech's court.

I don't think that
we've heard the end of this,

and I think that
the ripple effects of this story

are only beginning.

This is one of the worst days

in college football ever,
literally.

He might play.

A lot of people
will not like it.

This was a Texas judge,
I believe, that ruled this.
