[Shelby] "...while Lizzie had a fit
on the front lawn."


[shouting] Help! Help, help!

were spending the day
at an amusement park."


- ["Hong Kong Garden" continues playing]

I spent the day visiting a cousin
down the road in Woods Corner.

I arrived at dawn, left at noon.

The conductor had a 56 on his cap.

I rode back to Fall River
with six Catholic priests

and asked each their name.

Father Murphy, Father Schutt,
Father Loftus, Father Dombrowski,

Father Meany, and Father Rodlin.

I have a photographic memory.

my whereabouts this morning.

My brother-in-law, I hated.

didn't dine with us, so he wasn't ill.

He left the house around dawn
to visit a relation in Woods Corner.

At around eight o'clock I roused again,
feeling slightly better,

and Mrs. Borden and I
did some light dusting.


I'm sorry... did you say dustin'?

Oh, yes.

It was my idea.

I find nothing calms a sour stomach
quite like dusting.

I decided to go into town,

and I remember seeing Mrs. Borden
putting fresh shams

on the bed in the guest room upstairs.

And I asked,

"Is everything all right, Mrs. Borden?"

And she said,

"Well, I just received note
from a sick friend."


"She's very sick. Very ill."

I might go pay her a visit this morning.

She's very ill.

Did she say who this friend was?

She did not.

As I left the house,

I remember hearing
Mrs. Borden shout to Maggie.


Maggie! I want you to clean
all the windows.

[Lizzie] "Inside and out."

In town,
I passed Sargent's department store

and saw they were having a sale
on calico, eight cents a yard.

And so I raced home to tell Maggie.

She couldn't believe it.

"Eight cents a yard, you say?"

I said, "Yes, eight cents.
Can you believe it?"


She said, "Why, let's go buy some."

And I said, "First,
I'd like to iron some handkerchiefs."


Why would you want to iron handkerchiefs?

I find it soothing.

But the iron was taking so long to heat up

that I read Harper's Magazine.

And I heard someone knocking
from the kitchen,


and I thought it might be Father,
so I yelled...

Father, is that you?

And I heard Father shout back,
"Why is this door locked?"


And I heard Maggie say...

"Pshaw!"

Which made me laugh.
I thought that was so funny.

And so I was laughing all the way
down the stairs to greet Father.


You ran downstairs?

Yes.

You said you were
warming the iron in the kitchen.

That is downstairs.

No.

I was upstairs in my bedroom.

"Pshaw!"

Pshaw?

[laughs]

I helped Father take off his boots.

"Thank you, Lizzie."

"Such a... good daughter."

Here are your slippers, Father,
and your reefer coat.

"I'm going to take a nap, right here."

Would you like me
to close the drapes for you?

"Very kind of you."

I have a fishing trip on Monday.

I think I'll go look out back
for some sinkers.

That's when I heard a groan.

[detective] A groan?

Yes.

It wasn't a shout,
or I would have run towards it.

It was a loud groan
coming from inside the house.

That's when I saw
the screen door was open.


- [creaking]
- [ominous tones rising]

[clattering]

And I thought,
"Oh, Father must have awakened."


[door shuts]

And when I came inside...

[inhales deeply]

That's when I saw
my father had been m*rder*d.

So it wasn't until later
that you found your mother's body?

She's not my mother.

She's my stepmother.

My mother died very young.

But no.

Maggie and I discovered her later.

[unsettling tones resonate]
