Maybe Mickey k*lled her
just to shut her up.

A taxidermist?

Whoa, she speaks,

Yeah, well, the taxidermist in
your text kinda got my attention,

and anyway, it looks like I'm

Yeah. You know, if you're lucky, I could

Hello. Police.

We're, uh, we're looking
for Mickey Mossman.

[SQUELCH!]

Why the hell

would you be asking me about Naomi?

Hey, Aaron. Look, go make yourself useful. Go
sort out the mount for Mrs Bassett's ferret.

Are you idiots, bringin' up that
nonsense in front of my son?

- What nonsense would that be?
- The bloody nonsense that that old witch Marion

thought I was having an affair
with her daughter-in-law.

- Were you?
- No.

She was looking for a little bit of
strange on the wrong side of the tracks,

but she didn't get it with me.

Poor girl stuck with that wet dishrag Donald
and his churchy, hoity toity, bloody family.

I guess in the end, she still left
him and his money and took off.

She didn't take off.

She was most likely k*lled and dismembered
at the family home around the time she disappeare

Jesus.

[CHUCKLES] If I was gonna shag her, I wouldn't
exactly do it at Marion's house, would I?

And if you were gonna chop her

I didn't have this place back then. I
worked from home. You can check that.

- OK. No, stay open.
- We'll be right there. Just wait.

So, Sarge, that ute back there, it
was loaned to these guys for the clean-up.

It belongs to Donald Peterson.
It's registered to his business.

- Right.
- I checked out the tyres ― - brand new, no wear at all.

And so I called up a couple of
the tyre places. I got a hit.

He had a full new set put on
first thing yesterday morning.

Yeah, and it gets even better. They said
that the tyres were in good nick, so they kept them

Oosh, my favourite. Yum.

- So, we've got a match?
- Yeah, it's definitely the ute - that dumped the freezer.

- So we should pick Donald up, then?
- No, we know it was the vehicle,

but we don't know who
was driving it yet.

But he went and changed the tyres,
which didn't need changing, so...

Circumstantial. Still doesn't prove that
he dumped the freezer or k*lled Naomi.

Ooh, Belgium biscuits.

We've got five possible suspects,
Boss. So far, Mr and Mrs Peterson...

...Mike Mossman ― he was bloody
quick to deny his affair with Naomi,

and very keen to make sure his son
didn't hear the rest of our conversation.

I reckon it caused a family sh*t fight back
in the day and now he's lying about it.

- So, who are the other two?
- Uh, Larry and―

- Larry's dead.
- Not when Naomi disappeared, - he wasn't.

His heart attack was
two years after.

- Sorry, Sarge, so Larry and...
- His wife, Marion.

She said they all hated her.

Jeez.

So what― what now then?
Talk to the removalists?

I just did and they didn't
move any freezers out of that place, so...

First thing tomorrow,
we turn up the heat.

And the ute that

Oh, yeah, one of our team borrowed

Did tell your constable yesterday.

- Related to Michael Mossman?

Mickey the taxidermist?

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, he's my uncle.

Slayer of beasts and eater of meat,
so we're not that close.

But is that what you wanted
to talk to me about?

Is there somewhere we can talk?

Well, the bequest was
a total surprise, you know.

My family and Marion's

She had a soft spot for me,

Used to go fishing

Mrs Peterson, Morena.

Good morning.

- Do you have some news?
- No, but we do have some questions.

My husband's working on the list
of friends that you asked for,

but if you have more questions about Naomi,
I'd prefer we meet later on somewhere private.

Do you drive the ute, too, Mrs Peterson?
The one Donald forgot to tell us about.

I don't recall you asking
about a work vehicle.

Oh, do you recall him changing all
four tyres on it early Thursday morning?

- No. - Well, changing those tyres
- wasn't the smartest thing to do.

Well, if he did it, then no.

But, look, I would really prefer not to
talk about this in front of other people,

and we have matters that we need

Your ute was involved.
You changed the tyres. Why?

Why does it matter if
I change my tyres or not?

Well, the old tyres were perfectly
fine. We've actually got them.

We know the freezer containing your
ex-wife's body came from your father's shed.

We also know it was taken from
there recently on Wednesday morning.

We have footage of it on the back
of a ute the same make as yours.

Oh, and the tyres you switched out
match perfectly with tracks that were found

next to where the freezer
was dumped into the river.

So if you didn't drive that freezer
to the river, then who did?

We can go down to the station and continue this

Not here.

Elsewhere.

[WINDOW SQUEAKS]

- We didn't k*ll her.

What was the plan?

I took some fishing gear,
a few garden tools.

Who opened the freezer?

We both did. We, um...

We thought that there might be some

- WHISPERS: God. Dear God.

But I'll get a car to keep an eye on

You guys are on backgrounding ― everything

but he is still a suspect.

Also, see what you can dig up

- Anais, you wanna come with me to the morgue?

So it seems like we have

Yeah, I would have liked to have

She's not far off ― thawing out nicely.
It's faster than we hoped, eh, Anjali?

Any ideas about what

And you don't need internals to determine
one element of the cause of death. Anjali?

Quit while you're ahead, eh?

Thanks, Anjali. K, here we go. There's

Bye, Anjali.

Marion Peterson called the
station, says she's got something for us.

- You can't beat a custard square.
- It's a good old Southland recipe.

- I, um, [SCOFFS] I use the spare egg whites for pavlovas.
- Hot tip.

- So, we got a call saying you had something for us.
- Yes. You're looking at them.

- Sorry?
- The custard squares. I made this lot for you and your co-workers.

I make the rest for
the old crocks here,

but I'm also guessing that you might
want to be talking about opportunity.

- Opportunity? Bit of a m*rder mystery fan, are you, Marion?
- Oh yes. I like a good book.

- [CHUCKLES] Opportunity, - motive, alibis.
- Well, you're right.

It's important for us to know what opportunities
there were for Naomi to have been k*lled

- on the property.
- So you don't think she was k*lled somewhere else?

Most likely not, no.

[SIGHS] OK. Come on, Dolly.

Dolly the trolley [CHUCKLES] ―
my assistant.

[CHUCKLES] - The house was
usually empty every other weekend, and...

I would go and stay with my
friend Carlene in Arrowtown,

and Larry would usually take the
opportunity to bugger off fishing.

Naomi would come and feed Benito for
us, the cat, and look after the house.

Or perhaps she and Mickey Mouse
were at it there,

and perhaps Mickey did k*ll her there
because she was threatening to tell.

I mean, how would I know? But yes,
there would have been opportunity.

[CHUCKLES] Oh, I hope you
enjoy the custard squares.

- This is awesome.
- I love this flaky pastry stuff.

So, why are you so sure
she was k*lled at the house?

It doesn't work for me that whoever
did it brought the weapon from somewhere else

and ditched it there. I think
it all happened at once ―

blow to the head, dump the weapon,
finish the job, if needed,

then dismember her and into
the freezer she goes.

- Is Marion convinced it was Mickey?
- That's her go to, yeah ―

he k*lled her to stop her
from blabbing to his wife.

But according to Riven Mossman, Mickey's
wife already knew about his affair with Naomi.

Riven's not actually Riven,
by the way. He was born Roger.

Mm. Backgrounding ― Roger
has a couple of juvie sheets ―

one for as*ault and one
for public disturbance.

Riven― Roger is still pissed
off about his uncle and Naomi.

Well, maybe Marion's late
husband Larry was, too.

I mean, staunch Catholic family ― be
humiliating Donald being betrayed like that.

We checked out Larry's history
as well. He's got no police record.

Or maybe he caught Mickey and
Naomi at the house and just lost the plot.

Or maybe Mickey Mouse
did k*ll her.

Yeah. Maybe. He's got two
convictions for drunk and disorderly,

and he had a order taken
out on him from his wife.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

Righto, so we're goin' through
all this nonsense again, are we?

You've been talking to my greenie
vegan, prick-of-a-nephew, have you?

- We did a background check.
- Yeah, well, do a background check on him, too,

- cos he was a nasty little - bugger when he was a kid.
- We have checked. We know.

- I'm not drinking any more.
- But you were back then.

[CHUCKLES] That protection order
was bullshit. My wife withdrew it.

So, why did you lie to us
about your affair with Naomi?

Because I didn't want the whole
thing to be dredged up again.

I wanna retire at some point,
and I wanna do it in peace.

I didn't k*ll her.

If you wanna know,
I was nuts about her.

But, you know,
it never would've worked.

They were respectable,
money-in-the-bank kind of family,

whereas my lot could barely
afford the cheap seats.

When did it start, the affair?

Not for years.

But he was so wrong for her. But guys
like that, they just get everything.

In the end, I guess it still
wasn't enough for her.

about the statements

OK, so if we talk about

when Marion was in Arrowtown
staying with her friend,

Donald's on call,

Geraldine's in Christchurch overnight,
seeing a play, and Larry's gone fishing,

Yeah.

[SIGHS] So Naomi could have met Mickey at
the house, something went wrong, emotions ran h

Yeah, maybe.

Well, someone is lying.

This missing persons report ―

maybe what's niggling at you isn't to
do with the information that's in it,

but where the information came from.

In here, most of the day-to-day observations
about Naomi come from Marion and Geraldine.

Marion talks about Geraldine being
a comfort, 'we' noticing things.

I think you should get that formal statement
from the Petersons and lean on them hard,

maybe with a religious spin. If they're as
church-going as they say they are, you can use it

- Use their religion?
- Yeah.

Then maybe we can eliminate
one suspect, possibly two.

But I think you're right
to let them stew for now.

HOANA: There's enough kai here
to feed half of Queenstown.

- Yeah, I think that's the idea. Sam's a closet philanthropist.
- It's just gorgeous.

- Oh wow. This is awesome.
- Hey, Lena.

- This is Lena's invention.
- Doesn't it look amazing?

- I'll get us a drink. Red?
- Yeah, thanks.

- Hoana?
- Uh, no, I'm all good, though. - OK.

- How's she been? She been all good?
- Yeah, yeah.

Bit edgy, but she's definitely
coming back to herself, I reckon.

- Hey, Shelby. How are you?
- Hey, Anais. I'm great, thanks.

And she'll be better
after one of these.

- All right, everyone, let's hoe in, hey?
- Mm.

- Hey.
- Hi. [CHUCKLES] - Sorry about before at your bar ―

- in the middle of work stuff.
- It's fine.

How have you been? I know it's been a
weird time with Maja's investigation not progressing

- I'm OK. Yeah, I just wanna - be able to move on, you know?
- Yes.

We've all been feeling that, too.

I'm sorry I've been AWOL
since the funeral.

You're allowed to be angry and
upset as well. She was your friend, too.

- You sure you don't want a c*ck?
- No, no. I'm good, thank you.

- Thanks. - Cheers.
- Cheers.

Oh, that pork smells delicious.

SAM: Oh, there you go. [EXCLAIMS]

- Here you go, babe.
- Thank you. Wow, amazing. - Enjoy.

- Simon?
- Yes, please.

All right, so, some big pig
for the big pig, eh? [ALL LAUGH]

Hey.

- Sam's quite the hunter. He got - this one himself on the weekend.
- Yeah. Oh, with the crossb

You know, it's more sporting
than a r*fle, you know. It's fairer.

Oh, a knife and a couple
of dogs is fairer still.

Yeah, that'd be the way to go
if I had the dogs. [LAUGHS] - That's true.

- So, how's it all goin'?
- Any developments on the case?

Well, it's only been a
couple of days, eh? So...

Nah, I mean Maja's case ―
your mate Kincaid's investigation.

- Well, he's a d*ck.
- We're not really party to it.

Avenues of investigation are still
being followed and all that.

Yeah, I saw the latest
press conference.

I mean, Sharon said he's up and
down Invercargill like an airborne yo-yo ―

- an expensive one, eh, Sharon?
- Very. Hey, um, I might check on Ken.

- Look, I don't mean to hassle.
- It's just Maja was a friend.

So, is there anything we can do to
help ― maybe pitch in for a reward or something?

Appreciate it, but we don't do that
sort of thing through private channels. Protocols.

- That taste as good as it looks good, Jarrod?
- Better.

Hey, thanks, Sam. Salad.

[SIGHS]

Darling, you asleep?

Pretending.

I heard the door.

Do you feel like getting up and
coming out and cutting the cake with me?

Oh sorry, love.

Exhausted myself greeting everybody.

But you go, enjoy yourself.

I'm fine ―

just dozing.

OK, sweetheart. Happy anniversary.

Love you.

[MELANCHOLY MUSIC]

You've called Kylie, obviously.
[CHUCKLES] I'm busy, so leave a message.

Yeah. Kylie, I've been trying to reach
you all day. Just call me back when you get this, p

ideally before it's
tomorrow. Thank you.

[BROODING MUSIC]

When we spoke yesterday, your wife said you
both opened the freezer. What does that mean

There were items piled on top,
so we had to move them to open it.

But who actually opened it?

Honestly, can't remember.

- You and your husband - opened it together?
- Yes.

Whose idea was it to open it?

I think it was mine.

And when it was opened, what happened?
What did your wife do? Did she scream?

I don't― I don't think she did.

[CHUCKLES] Geraldine's not
really the screaming type.

It was gruesome. I don't even wanna
think about it, let alone describe it.

- Was Donald happy about opening it? - Why are you asking me that?
- Why do you think

Did it strike you as odd that your
wife didn't scream? Why didn't she?

Because it's a question you've
been asking yourself before God.

And God does know the
truth here, Geraldine.

He was...

- maybe reluctant.
- Reluctant?

- Maybe like he didn't - want to open it.
- Or maybe he knew what was in it.

Could it be that she knew what
was inside because she k*lled her?

Oh dear God.

I think you can forget about them as
suspects. He thinks she did it, and she thinks he did.

- Which probably means neither - of them did it, right?
- Yeah.

[JAUNTY WESTERN MUSIC]

OK, so if we eliminate Donald and Geraldine
Peterson, that leaves us with Riven as an outside

then Mickey Mouse,

Larry the dead man, and Marion.

So I wanna bring them in, not the dead
man, obviously, to go over it all again,

see if anything shakes loose.

Hey, you've called Kylie―

I think we should start
with Riven Mossman.

...obviously. [CHUCKLES] I'm busy.

Simon.

The m*rder weapon―

Yeah, we figure it might have been something
from Larry practising his woodturning.

No, no, no, I don't think it's a practice
piece. This is the finished article. It's a roll

- What?
- HOANA: Well, it doesn't look like a rolling pin.

It's what's called a French pin.

It's tapered at the ends for
increased pressure in the middle.

Nice even flaky pastry.

- This is awesome.
- I love this flaky pastry stuff.

Bloody hell. We can narrow
it down right now.

Marion. She was baking when we went
back to talk to her yesterday.

She was starting on a
second batch of slices.

- Can't beat a custard square.
- It's a good old Southland recipe.

And she was using a rolling pin ―
a standard one.

But it seemed like she would
have preferred something else.

Yeah, and if Larry did make the
pin, he would have made it for her.

[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]

[PLATE CLATTERS]

Oh, you needn't have brought that back, dear.
It's just one of those plastic picnicky thin

We wanted to have a chat, anyway.

- Oh, so how did you enjoy - the custard squares?
- Mm, delicious. Nice silky custa

- Great pastry, too.
- Mm. - Crisp, delicate,

even with a standard rolling pin.

- Well, that's good. [CHUCKLES]
- I'm glad you enjoyed them.

- Now, why don't you go and sit down and I'll pour us all some tea?
- We're fine, thanks

Well, I'm going to have a cup, so go on and
I'll get it myself with― with Dolly's help. [C

Um, Carlene, that friend of mine in
Arrowtown I was telling you about,

I once said to her, 'I never understand this
whole glass ceiling thing people talk abou

But, you know, [CHUCKLES]
I think I do now.

It's all about how people are seen,
isn't it? Like you ― so clever.

It's hard to believe
you're as young as you are.

Perhaps it's an advantage
to be a young woman in your job.

You can just sneak past people,

catch 'em unawares.

So,

- where would you like me to start?
- How about the beginning?

Well, that would be when Donald
met both Geraldine and Naomi at church.

Naomi had a bit more spark.

I knew Larry wouldn't do anything,
but I saw exactly what Naomi was.

That spark of hers was dangerous.

- Geraldine and I had been close for a number of years.
- And Naomi disappeared.

Yes. Well, she'd been carrying on with
Mickey Mouse for at least 18 months by then.

- Did Donald know?
- I think he had an idea, but he was too weak to do anything about

so someone had to.

So how did you get her
to come to the house?

Oh, she didn't need any persuading. They'd
been using the house every weekend we were aw

[OMINOUS MUSIC]

[YELLS]
[ROLLING PIN THWACKS, NAOMI GASPS]

- So Mickey was a bridge too far?
- Yes.

[NAOMI GASPS, GROANS]

[NAOMI GASPS]

MICKEY: Hey, Naomi!

Naomi!

I had locked the door,
and I didn't answer it.

So, after he left,

I finished the job and
took her to the shed.

- Did Geraldine help you?
- No.

You leave her alone. She had nothing to do with
this. She had no idea what I'd done ― still

I needed her to be there for Donald.
He should have chosen her to start with.

Then you could have avoided
all this trouble.

What about Larry? He could have
gone into that freezer at any time.

I wasn't going to use the freezer in the
house, was I? I mean, that would have been unhy

So I told him. I think the upset and worry
eventually caused his final heart attack.

When you gave the house to the Guardians,
why didn't you get rid of the evidence?

It was 15

odd years.

I'd forgotten about the whole
thing, to tell you the truth.

Thank you for explaining
all of this to us, Marion.

You will have to do it all again in a formal
setting, I'm afraid, because I'm placing you under

- Oh.
- We will be charging you with the m*rder of Naomi Peterson.

- That's, no― Nonsense, no.
- [CHUCKLES]

I won't be going to jail.
[PANTS, CHUCKLES]

I'm too old and decrepit to be bothered with
that. Like I told you, the sooner I die, the

[CRASH!]

It's OK, Marion, you're gonna be
OK. We're gonna get you to hospital.

[PANTS]

Oh, my almond cake.

He loved it.

He loved my almond cake.

[BROODING MUSIC]

It was lucky she was unconscious by
the time they got her to the hospital,

otherwise, I reckon she would have
refused a stomach pump.

I mean, we were sitting there, like,
thinking, 'This is a done deal'.

Meanwhile, she is sneakily using her
confession to give the strychnine time to work.

- Well done, Simon.
- Notch on your own belt, huh?

We all worked together, and Anais
was great. Good result though, yeah.

Well within six weeks.

- You say something, Constable?
- Uh, no. Just said that her alibi - was piss weak ― a per

- But she confessed anyway, - so yeah, job done, team.
- Yes. Whoo.

Anjali. You can probably
head off. No pun intended.

Uh, don't seem to be any
new customers for now.

They're not customers or clients, or...
They're people with names, with families,

with people who love them.

OK, yeah, I get that. I'm just― -
Manaaki. Do you know what that is? It means we care fo

we speak for them,
we listen to what they tell us.

It's an intimate conversation.

[SIGHS]

Hey.

Bad time?

Kinda, I think,

butl'mhere.

Do ya need something?

I need to ask you if there's
a test that can be done.

- DONALD: What are you doing here?
- MICKEY: I've come here to have a word with her,

- and I'm gonna say exactly - what I came to say.
- Out.

- You are an evil― - Out, out! That is enough!
- You are an evil old b*tch!

- Out of here now! Detective! Out!
- And you are gonna rot in hell!

- You understand? - Enough!
- 'Scuse me, Donald,

- take your hands off me!
- Enough!

Aren't you gonna do something?

I'm not talking

to you, young lady.

What's going on?

I'll leave it to you to tell your son the
whole story, Marion ― what you did to Naomi.

What's she talking about,
Mother? Mum?

And the things you
haven't confessed.

Whatever did happen
to your husband?

Oh, Larry.

All those crumbs.

My almond cake.

Was it good?

What else tastes of almonds?

Don't be ridiculous. [CHUCKLES]

Did you know human ashes can be
tested for cyanide even after years?

We'll be in touch.

[CURIOUS MUSIC]

- Here you go. Botanical, distilled - on the premises, you'll love it.
- Thanks, and nice p

- Oh, cool.

Mmm.

Very cool. Mmm.

the shoulder. Do you feel like a drink?

Yeah. Yeah, that sounds great. Oh, you

You take care.

- I did.

I did.

Hey, what the f*ck is going on?
