Turning 40 doesn't bother me.

Well, I looked 40 ten years ago, so...

[Coleen] It's a big week. I'm turning 40,

and Wayne's helped me organise
a massive celebration for my big day.

[exclaims]

-[Klay] Hey, Dad.
-[plate thuds]

[Kit] Ew!

-Be grateful you're getting food.
-Okay.

[Coleen] Wayne's juggling home life...

[Kit] Dad! No! It's not allowed!

[Coleen] ...but he's started
thinking about football again.

We have breaking news.

[reporter] And Manchester United
is delighted to announce the appointment

of Michael Carrick as head coach
until the end of the season.

Wayne, would you join Michael Carrick
as part of his coaching staff?

[chuckles] Erm...

[Coleen] And he's got
some big career decisions.

If something at Everton
or United come up...

-[Paul] Yeah.
-then I would go back in.

[Coleen] But our schedule
is getting pretty full-on,

as my Primark range
is launching in a matter of days.

Oh, my God.

There's gonna be press.
There's gonna be influencers.

I am obsessed with it.

The nerves are setting in.

I think you can just style that
how you want.

I want it to be popular.

I want it to be a huge success,
but my worry is...

is it gonna sell,
or is it gonna be a big flop?

[Coleen] I've had a lot on my mind
since I've got back from holiday,

but today I have to focus on work.

The launch of my Primark range
is around the corner,

which is really exciting.

However, there's a lot to do.

I am going to meet with Wendy, who is
going to talk me through everything.

We've got a launch event.
We've got press to do.

It's going to be a really busy,
but exciting time.

So, the plan currently is to go live

and announce it to the world
on the 27th of February,

and we'll do that
through our own Primark Instagram.

So we've got 24 million followers
across all of our social platforms.

And we'd work with influencers
and some high-profile media,

and we'd bring them to an event in London.

So we think this will be
a really high-engagement moment.

And then we move from the event
into online and in-store,

so I just wanted to give you a flavour
of how that's going to start to look.

So, will you do that as, like,
a collaboration or... across my...

The plan is to do them as a dual post...

and with our Instagram,
and to launch that on the day.

[Coleen] I've put my name to this range,

and Primark is, you know,
a massive worldwide store.

So I don't want to disappoint them.

I don't want to disappoint,
you know, my fan base,

who will be excited
about me launching a range.

[producer] Wayne, can you, erm, describe
Coleen's style in, like, three words?

She dresses really nice.

He doesn't like... yeah, like, flat shoes.

Flat things are terrible.

So I've got, like, these Nettas ones
that, at the minute...

Look like something you put on
to go to hospital.

-[laughing]
-Serious.

[producer] I know you probably have
a few thoughts on Wayne's outfits.

Do you ever give it back the other way?

[Coleen] Once, when we went
to Manchester United,

we went into the lounge,

and when he took his jacket off,
he had these, like, big, baggy pants on.

I looked, I think,
"I've never seen that before,

and what is that?"

And I said to him, "They're pyjamas
that you've got on, you know?"

[Danielle] Like, we were howling.
Coleen sends me a four-minute voice note.

Being like, "Dan, check this out.

I didn't leave Wayne
any clothes out last night.

He had... All he had to do
was just get himself ready,

and he turns up in pyjamas
with the tag on."

But he wasn't embarrassed.

And he said, "Well,
they looked like a trackie.

But I'm not arsed. Not arsed."

Think my mum got me them
from Home Bargains.

The space that we use for the launch event

has got to reflect my range.

It's got to fit in with what message
we want to get across,

which is,
there's a piece in there for everyone.

The venue is going to be really important.

[Coleen] The first venue was
straight away appealing.

-Hi. You okay?
-Hi. How are you?

-Are you okay?
-Yeah, good, thank you. Nice to see you.

Obviously, the whole thing, we would have.
So, completely private.

We could make it work.

However, when you get into that building,
there's not much room.

That's quite a nice view from here.

So, again, it's a great space for zoning.
Like, it does work really nicely.

I'm not going to write it off

because I want to go and see
what the second location looks like first.

When I first walked in,
I was thinking, "This is small."

-Yeah.
-Yeah. I'm just

curious to see the next one

-so I can compare.
-Yeah.

-Very nice.
-This would be your product space.

You'd make use of the...
obviously, the gorgeous ceiling detail.

You've got that big wrap-around terrace,

which we could use
if it was lovely weather.

-What's the immediate feel?
-[inhales deeply]

I just think the flow of this
works better.

I just feel like you get
a better atmosphere in this space.

[all] Yeah.

Location two was appealing
as soon as I walked into it.

The ceiling height,
the windows that wrapped around.

I've decided that this is going to be
the venue for the event.

It's such a beautiful space.

But, yeah, I'm excited now.

Can you ask them
to take that scaffolding down?

[Steph chuckles]

[Coleen] Wayne's also getting busier
with his TV and media work.

He's started working as a pundit
on Champions League games.

-Up to his usual big-game tactics?

taking over as Manchester United manager,

which is great, it's got Wayne
talking about football jobs again.

[Wayne] Since the news of Michael Carrick
going in at Manchester United,

I've been thinking, maybe overthinking,
thinking about coaching again.

And, erm, so that's been on my mind.

[Paul] Here it is, the stadium.

[Wayne] But I'm really enjoying
my punditry and broadcasting work.

Obviously, I've got...
podcast, which I've signed up to.

I've got Match of the Day,
which I've signed up to.

So you have to walk away from them.

I've always assumed, after playing,
that I'd be a manager or coach,

but I'm starting to think maybe, for now,
my future lies elsewhere.

[Coleen] Kit! Where's your blazer?

-[Kit] What?
-[Coleen] Your blazer.

-[Kit groans]
-[Coleen] Where is it?

-Oh, it's in the boot.

It's back to the old routine today
while Wayne is out in Portugal, working.

Wayne's been home far more
since he's left coaching,

and it feels like
we're finally getting settled.

But when he's away with the TV work,

the kids don't waste
any time taking advantage.

I'm putting them on there

At dinner time, it should be
a time where you talk as a family,

and that's what I did when I was younger
with my brothers and mum and dad.

[Coleen] We would sit down
after school every day together

and discuss how the day went.

-You've got a London trip, haven't you?
-Yeah.

-Are you looking forward to that?
-What are you doing?

I'm taking it off you
because I'm talking to you.

Did the teachers say
where they went on holiday?

-[Cass] America.
-America?

Yeah.

Whereabouts in America?

Kids and devices.
Everyone has their own view on it.

But when you say no,
they always try and find a way.

-[Kit mutters]
-[Cass giggles]

-He's gonna get his iPad now.
-[Coleen] I know.

I try, but then there's other times
I just think, "Do you know what?

It's fine. I've had a busy day.

Just eat your dinner and watch something."

-[Cass] Knew it.
-What?

"Who's on the phone most out of the kids?

And is Coleen as bad as the kids?"
Yeah. No, worse.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Coleen's the worst one in the house.

[Paul] Here we go.

[Wayne] The Stadium of Lights was a big
part of my first tournament in Euro 2004.

I went a little bit early and had a walk
around when no one was in the stadium.

And you can feel the memories.

That day,
this stadium was absolutely bouncing.

[Wayne] Good game, and I scored two goals.

It's played a part in my career,
so nice to go back there.

I helped set up the first goal.
Scored two myself.

-[commentator 1] Rooney!
-[crowd cheering]

In the stadium, you can see and visualise
moments which have happened on the pitch.

[commentator 1] Owen. Back for Rooney.

Wayne Rooney is in for England again!

[crowd cheering]

[Wayne] It was the biggest moment of...
of my international career at that point.

[commentator 1]
A true international star is born.

His name? Wayne Rooney.

[Wayne] After that, things went a bit mad.

[commentator 2] Rooney...

[commentator 2] He's done it again.

Went to the next level, to be honest.

I'd love to be in that moment again.
It was such a special feeling.

[Paul] I absolutely understand
his desire to stay in football,

and to, uh, go back in there
either a manager or a coach.

When you're on the other side,

in front of the camera and...
and media and so on,

it doesn't carry that same adrenaline.

But we've got to be realistic that
where we are now is a good place for him.

Do you know, after the games,
you know what they used to give us

-on the team bus?
-What?

-They used to give us a bottle of Yazoo...
-Oh... [chuckling]

And a Pot Noodle.

Is that where you got your love
of pot noodles from? [chuckles]

-[Wayne] Imagine giving players that now.

There's a lot riding on today.

This is the first day the world
gets to see my new Primark range.

Even though I don't show it,
there is a part of me

that is nervous for what's to come.

There will be a lot of influencers
and, erm, press,

so it's just giving everyone a sneak peek.

[Coleen] I think it's going to be hard
to judge today whether people like it.

It's not until they go away and they,

you know, either post or don't post,

or they do the write-ups,
and it's not a good write-up.

[Coleen] If it does all go wrong today
and get bad press,

then that's going to affect the people
who are going to go in store,

or not go in store, and buy it.

The whole social media thing

when selling the product
is totally new to me.

I've never worked firsthand like this.

It takes one person to criticise,

And I think because of my name as well,
you know, people will jump on it.

I think it's a blank canvas for everyone
to style how they want to style it.

that's one of my favourite pieces.

[Coleen] It was a bit of a curveball,

and I wasn't expecting
someone to ask me that.

The event was everything and more
that I envisioned.

There was a real buzz.

The feedback was unbelievable.

Obviously, my mind's now thinking
about the launch day

and the shop fit-out.

You know, I never settle.
It's always, "Right, what's next?"

[Kit] Dad! You getting in?

[Wayne] Sometimes when you're away,
you miss the kids.

And then when you see them, you think,
"Right, I wish I was back there."

Four boys, and,
like, energetic boys, is tough.

There's no denying that.

[Kit] Dad! No! It's not allowed!

It's intense and tiring.

I'm the only one who cooks in this house,
by the way. Just so you know.

Uh, what Dad cooks? Pfft.

Uh...

Uh, Pot Noodles.

Noodles.

-Bad steak.
-That's it.

Ew. That's... That's too done.

-It's not too done.
-It is.

That's like when Mum does it.

Just sit there and be grateful
you're getting food.

Yeah, I would say I have to agree
with all that, actually.

I would start an argument first.

Go and take your dad on. Go and have fun.

[Wayne] Obviously, I miss football,

but the media work has allowed me
to be home much more

and to spend more time with my boys.

Kai plays for Manchester United
in the academy, and he is very driven.

[Kai] I want to play at the highest level.

I want to play for the best teams
in the world.

And that's all I really want to do.

Look back and be happy
with what I've achieved

as a player and as a person.

So, I'd say I take that side from my dad.

Like, obviously, because you are, like,

teaching me and showing me
different, like, options

and ways to do things,

when you were my age,
did you have someone, like, guiding you?

I did have coaches, obviously,
to help, yeah,

but your decision-making on the pitch,

understanding and reading the game
as it goes on,

that's the hardest part of football.

You can have all the coaching
in the world.

Look at the best players
through the history of football.

Everything they do is on instinct,
and that comes with experience.

You won't have that
until you're in your 20s.

I was still learning
up until the last game I ever played...

as a professional.

After 20 years of playing professional,
I'm still learning.

And you're always
learning different things.

[♪ Tender music playing]

[Wayne] Like all 16-year-old lads,
Kai thinks he's a man now.

But I know there will be times when
he needs me to help him and guide him.

So I'll be there to support him
in the background.

I've had my time. My time's gone.

You have to create your own legacy
and your own moment and your own career.

Erm, that's part of being an adult.

And, of course, I'll be there every step.

The work you put in,
the effort you put in to get there...

Turning 40, you know, people say,
"Oh, it's a massive milestone."

I looked 40 ten years ago, so I'm happy.

No, I don't mean on the outside.
I mean, on the inside.

I do feel young, and I do think,
"How are we 40?"

It's come round really quick.

[Colette] So it's hard to believe
they're both 40 now.

Watching them growing up, it's been
a journey we've all been on with them.

To think, my baby is 40.

How old must I be? [chuckles]

we carried on the celebration

with a long-held family tradition.

A trip to Aintree races.

What age did you start going to the races?

Eighteen. I think,
as the years have gone on,

I've gone more sophisticated. [chuckles]

[Colette] Coleen, she had
some lovely outfits for the Aintree races.

She was known as the Queen of Aintree,
I think it was, by the local paper.

But we had some great times at Aintree.

I think, since I was about 18.

taking place this summer,

I'm going for a chat with my agent, Paul,

[Paul] For the upcoming World Cup games,

it's an environment Wayne can do well in.

Wayne's not afraid of taking on
the big moments and owning them.

I know that it's hard to replace
what you once did,

but I think this is
the next step of a new,

big, wonderful and exciting journey.

It's all really going well,
but obviously it's a big change

from how it's been for you
for the past 15, 20 years.

How are you finding that?

When you're involved in football as a...
as a player, as a manager,

erm, I don't think
anything will ever replace that.

You know doing...
sitting down talking about football

and talking about players

is never going to give you
what playing and scoring a goal

or being a manager and winning it...

So the quicker you realise
and understand that,

then the easier it is to deal with.

And at the end of the day,
you've had a career that everyone...

people dream of.

-I'm-I'm happy to move on from that.
-Yeah.

Erm, obviously, made great memories.

Put that behind me, and now I want
to get the Match of the Day thing right.

I want to be better at the podcast.
I want to try and grow and improve it.

Yeah, and your satisfaction's come
from different areas now, you know.

Like watching Kai.
Like having that time at home.

I'm happy with the balance of everything.

I've got time to spend
with my family and friends.

Got time with the kids
that I've missed so... so much of.

of my life.

It is the night before launch day.

I am heading into the Liverpool store.

They're going to set up my range,

and I'm going to have a little look at it

before everyone gets to see it tomorrow.

Well, obviously it's my home town.

It just felt like the right place

to go to see it in-store
for the first time.

I can't really believe that we're here,
because it has been a long process.

-Hi, you okay? Nice to meet you, yeah.

We've done the designs,
we've done the sh**t,

we've done the launch,
and now, hopefully, it pays off.

-Okay, so this is our trend area.
-[Coleen] Okay.

What we see going on today will be
happening up and down the country.

-Okay.
-And, erm, Madrid, Gran Via, Birkenhead...

-Yeah, yeah. [laughs]
-[laughs]

[Colette] To go into Liverpool that night,
there was a giant poster of her,

and I just looked back and thought,
"God, that's my... that's my daughter."

And that meant...
that meant the world to me to see.

I didn't think I'd be allowed to do this.

-I thought I'd have to come tomorrow...
-You got special treatment.

Yeah. [laughs]

I'm thinking, "God, she's...
she's done this on her own."

As a mum, I felt so proud.

[laughter]

[Colette] Coleen, growing up, erm,
from a very young age,

she works hard at whatever she does,
and she gives a hundred percent.

I just look at her and think,
"From the little girl she was,

to the woman she's become."

[Colette] "That's our baby girl."

She's amazing.

[Coleen] It's been a long time coming,
so to see it actually...

in store, knowing that it's going
to go on sale tomorrow is nice.

Probably. Probably.

Yeah, I was watching them taking pictures.

It's a massive moment for me that,
you know,

my range is in store
for everyone to go and buy.

And knowing that

a lot of friends and family are going
to be walking up that high street

and passing me in the window
and seeing what I've achieved.

[Wayne] We used to walk down them streets.

And so to go back
into the city centre and, you know,

see Coleen's clothing range all up and
the big images of her in the windows...

It was something I know she's wanted
and worked hard to achieve.

And so, yeah.
It was an extremely proud moment.

[Coleen] Primark, they've got stores
all over the world,

and I want it to be popular.

I want it to be a huge success.

But my worry is, is it going to sell,
or is it going to be a big flop?
