[intense music]
[music continues]
You're in Idaho, Pete.
So far so good.
Yeah.
[tires screeching]
[siren blaring]
We've got company.
Yeah. I guess I better pull over.
- Good morning. - Good morning, officer.
I, uh, I don't know what I did, but I'm sorry.
Oh, may I see your driver's license, please?
Oh, sure.
Here you go.
- Hey, how are you? - Fine, thank you.
Okay. Are you aware that you just made what is technically
an ill*gal crossing of the US-Canadian border?
No, officer, I-I wasn't aware of it.
I got a report from the border.
You were spotted by a forest ranger.
Well, we planned to cross at White Horse
but, uh, I managed to get us lost.
Hm. Can I see the vehicle registration, please?
Uh, well, I, uh--
I, uh, think it's in the, uh, glove compartment, isn't it?
Yeah, I think you're right.
We borrowed the car from a friend in Buffalo.
Oh.
- Here it is, officer. - Oh, thank you.
[dramatic music]
- Wasn't there any other way? - None at all.
In another minute, he'd been on that radio checking us out.
Now, get me out of here.

[male narrator] "The FBI."
A Quinn Martin production.
Starring Efrem Zimbalist Jr..
Also starring Philip Abbott..
William Reynolds..
With guest stars, Christopher George..
Lynda Day..
Richard Devon..
And special guest star, Mark Richman.
Tonight's episode, "Return To Power."
[instrumental music]
On the morning of October 18th
border patrol inspector, John Bonner
was rushed to an emergency hospital
near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
after being assaulted by two men
who had illegally crossed the US-Canadian border.
A description of the car and license number
was forwarded to Washington
to the FBI's National Crime Information Center
where it was discovered that the car had been stolen
three days earlier in Buffalo, New York.
The bureau's Identification Division
received latent fingerprints found on the car registration.
They matched those of long time courier for La Cosa Nostra
Frank Di Mirjian.
That's the man who was driving.
Hm. Well, thanks for your help, inspector.
Well, the sequence seems fairly clear.
Di Mirjian stole the car
drove it into Canada, picked up this other man
and they drove two-thirds of the way across Canada
before deciding to reenter the United States.
The question is who was this other man.
Hmm.
And what were they bringing across
that was important enough for them
to risk making it a federal case?
Narcotics?
Well, that's the first thought that comes to mind, of course
although Di Mirjian's never been involved
in narcotics before.
Well, in any case, the border inspector's identification
makes it possible for us to request a federal warrant.
We'll move on that and hope to identify
the other man as we go along.
[car approaching]
Alright, get going. I'll keep in touch.
When I hit Florida, you want me to check with anybody?
You check with nobody. Wait for my call.
Alright, will do.
[instrumental music]
Hi.
Pete, it's been so long.
I know, I know. Well, I'm back. And for good.
We gotta go. Come on.
I was thinking while I was waiting.
This is almost like an elopement.
I didn't come back for a wedding, Maria.
At least, not yet.
[engine starts]
What did you come back for, Pete?
Why does anybody come back to his family?
Christening, wedding..
...and a funeral.
[tires screeching]
Lewis, I've been going over the criminal intelligence file
on Di Mirjian.
He's done a lot of traveling for La Cosa Nostra.
'He's been living in Baltimore recently'
'but makes a lot of trips to Miami.'
'He used to be a courier for old Gus Tenny in Boston.'
When did he move to Baltimore?
In '66.
At the time the Tenny and Bender families
were at each other's throats?
No, a little later.
Around, uh, November.
Let's see, Gus was dead by then.
His son, Peter Tenny, fled the country
when the Boston office started closing in
on a good interstate gambling case.
Yeah, he was indicted if I remember right.
Yes, and the warrant's still outstanding.
Now, we know Tenny's been all over Europe the past two years
but our liaison representative in Paris
reported that he's vanished.
He could be the second man.
Two years is a long time.
Long enough for Vincent Manyan to entrench himself
with the head of the family and lock Tenny out completely.
Yes, and if that's true
Tenny had no choice but to risk coming back and challenge him.
[instrumental music]
[knocking on door]
Hey, what are you sitting in the dark for?
It's a beautiful day outside. Come on, let's..
Don't draw the drapes.
Hey..
Is somebody still looking for you?
Everybody is. How do they say it on TV, uh
federal state and local authorities.
And some of my own people are too.
Then what did you come back for?
He sent me a picture in an envelope.
General delivery, Madrid, Spain.
That's how I say goodbye to my father..
...sitting in a bar with a snapshot of his grave.
Peter..
Ah, did you get, uh, Andy Fall's number for me?
Sure. Just like you asked.
I better talk to him.
I gotta see how he feels.
What is there for him to feel?
He's an old man.
He's got a fa.. Wife and grandchildren.
He wants to die in bed.
My father saved his life 12 years ago.
Honey, you've been gone for two years now.
We can have a whole new life together.
'I'll go with you anywhere.'
I've got an 18-month-old daughter in Boston.
She could use a mother and a father
and a house of love to grow up in.
She's not my kid, Maria.
Can you hate me
because I thought you were gone for good?
So I married a nice guy I hardly knew.
We both knew it was a mistake a week after the wedding.
'So he's gone.'
I don't hate you, Maria. You know that.
But I gotta know where Andy stands.
If I can count on him.
Count on him for what?
I just told you I'll go with you.
I'm not running anymore.
I'm going back.
You think Vinnie will let me?
The capo of the family is gonna let me go back?
He's sitting in my father's chair.
My father's.
- Vinnie is your brother. - Half brother!
So, you wanna fight Vinnie
so you can be head of the family, huh?
Vinnie would k*ll me if he could.
How else does he go with this?
How else?
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
[music continues]
You try this time.
If he answers, just give me the phone
but if his wife or his kids pick it up
tell them, uh, it's a wrong number or something.
Honey, for two years, you didn't talk to anybody.
Now, why do you have to talk to him--
How can you understand this?
Well, try me.
At least, I'd like to know why.
The last few months Frankie Di has been
picking up information for me.
I'm sure that Vinnie and the Benders are holding back
cheating the counsel.
Now, I know what my father used to realize out of New England.
It should be more now, not less.
But, Pete, what has that got to do with us?
Look..
...there's a high-level meeting in Chicago this week.
Andy gets the records to me, I go through 'em.
I find out where and how they've been scheming.
Then I go to meeting with the evidence.
And what about Vinnie?
Maria, I know, uh, Vinnie's been in love with you.
He's wanted everything I've ever had, even when we were kids.
Then I, uh, I suppose it does come down to a fight
between the two of you, huh?
Suppose it does.
[instrumental music]
I guess that's it, Pete.
I've loved you ever since I can remember.
I never loved anybody else but you.
But now I gotta go..
...before it starts.
Maria.
I need you.
No, you don't.
You see, you don't understand.
A man who wants to live needs a woman.
'A man who wants to k*ll doesn't need anybody.'
All he needs is whatever he's gonna k*ll with.
Alright.
I'll get you out on the next plane.
[instrumental music]
Welcome to Mobile, inspector.
You must have just barely touch down.
- Is that his car? - Yes, it is.
Highway patrol spotted it coming in
on Highway 90 and notified it.
I thought you'd want me to hold on
until you could get over here.
Thanks. Where is he exactly?
He's at the pool table right now.
That could be a little touchy.
There's still a few customers in there.
- Do we have anybody inside yet? - Agent Wylie.
He's in the first booth near the front door.
Thanks, you better stay here and cover the back.
[instrumental music]
You want to bring me a little more of the same, honey?
Another one.
We're the FBI, miss.
We're about to make an arrest.
After you take him his drink
I want you to walk out the back door and stay there.
Well, thanks, honey.
[music continues]
[clears throat]
Honey?
FBI, you're under arrest.
[grunts]
[instrumental music]
Hm.
[baby cooing]
[doorbell dings]
Hello, Gwen.
- Maria? - Vinnie.
I, uh, I wasn't expecting to see you.
Okay.
You look nice.
Are you paying Gwen extra to, uh, spy on me?
[chuckles]
Oh, just to help me keep an eye on things here
while you're, uh, off meeting Pete.
That's, uh, very thoughtful.
I'm glad to do it.
You know, there's a brand new limousine
sitting downstairs in a garage.
Any time of the day and night, there's a driver.
I know that, Vinnie.
- So, you still take cabs, huh? - Mm-hmm.
Where's Pete?
Alright, forget that.
I know he's not here in Boston, he's still out west.
You know, when Frank Di Mirjian crossed the border with him..
...naturally, he went to see you.
How many more chances, Maria
will he have to ruin your life?
Vinnie, it doesn't do any good to--
He never did.
What did he come back for?
What does he want besides you?
Vinnie, you got all the girls in New England.
Not all...I'd want.
But that's not your fault.
A woman feels what she feels
so does a man.
We have to try to live with that.
I guess I ought to be able to answer my own question.
Pete wants everything I've got.
The family, business, my life, huh?
Cathy asleep?
Like an angel.
I'm gonna look in.
[cooing]
She's getting prettier by the minute.
She takes after her mother.
Maria, when you talk to Pete
you tell him as long as he wants to stay out there it's fine
or if he wants to come back here
and try to beat his federal rap
I'll even help him
but the whole ballpark
from the bleachers to the clubhouse
belongs to me now
and if he tries to change that, I'll hit him in the head.
You give him that word, Maria.
From his brother.
[instrumental music]
Who is the other man with you?
Omerta? The noble silence?
Frank, we've got positive identification
from the border patrolman.
So, I'll take a fall on this one.
[Erskine] 'Won't be the first time, will it?'
You think your own people will leave you alone long enough?
They tried to hit me.
Me!
Why?
Because you brought Pete Tenny back?
Yeah.
Manyan and Bender must have found out about it.
But you want to know more than that.
You gotta make a deal.
You gotta keep me alive.
We don't make deals, but we'll try to keep you alive
even if you never say another word.
You're in a lot of trouble, Frank
and you've got a lot of reasons for helping us.
Now, where is he?
I don't know.
And that's the truth.
Somewhere out west, I guess.
[dramatic music]
[all laughing]
How about that?
What were you doing with all of that oysters, Vince?
Shoved them in your pocket?
Ever seen anybody eat so many oysters?
Hey, Vince, I hate to keep coming back to the same subject
over and over again, but you gotta make a decision.
The girl knows where he is or can find him
but you gotta make a move against him.
He hasn't done anything yet.
'He came back, didn't he?'
Look, once you make a decision, I'll carry it out for you.
Or if you want me to I'll even make the decision for you.
We got a good thing going here.
We have a profitable peaceful life.
[sighs] Maybe if, uh..
Maybe if I go see him.
Alright, big deal, so you go to see him
what are you gonna talk about?
About the time you went to school together?
Played stickball on the street? Stole a car?
Hey, he doesn't care anything about that now.
We come from the same mother.
He's my brother.
Yeah. I know.
He's my brother.
It's alright.
I'm not Cain.
Vince, there were only two of them.
Cain and Abel.
You gotta be one or the other.
[instrumental music]
[Erskine] 'According to Di Mirjian, it seems clear'
that the revival of the Tenny-Bender g*ng w*r
is imminent if Tenny regains control of the family.
His feeling is that Tenny will remain in the west.
On the basis of that, we've circulated wanted flyers
and notified the law enforcement agencies
in all them western states.
Of course, even if we locate Tenny and arrest him
there's no reason why he couldn't make bail
and continue on with his plan.
Mr. Ward, how does the Pierce girl fit into this?
Apparently she knew Tenny was returning
and, uh, went to meet him.
We don't know for sure yet.
We know that she returned to Boston last night
on the KBL flight out of Kansas City.
Of course she could've flown there from almost anywhere.
Couple of Manyan's men were there to meet her
so that she got home safely.
Later on, Manyan himself even showed up.
Boston office is keeping her under surveillance
'as well as Manyan and Bender.'
Di Mirjian feels that what Tenny wants
is proof of Manyan and Bender's scheming operation.
The informant has told us there's a gathering
of the high commission schedule for Chicago
within the next couple of days.
If Tenny could bring evidence before the commission
both Manyan and Bender would be on their way out.
Right, and this could tie in with a meeting
in an East Boston restaurant last night.
We think it's significant that Andrew Fall
the family counselor, the man closest
to both Gus Tenny and his son, was not invited.
[sighs]
You talked to Pete, didn't you?
Yeah, yeah, he called.
Uh, just said it was good to see you.
He wanted you to bring him something, didn't he?
Maria, don't try to know what you shouldn't know.
What did you tell him?
Please, Andy, I'm trying to save his life.
Stop this miserable fighting.
I don't know.
I couldn't think then
and I don't want to think about it now.
You've got to think about it now.
He says it's him or Vinnie.
That's not true.
Isn't it?
Andy.
Andy, you and Julia..
Well, you're all I've got.
I've got nobody else to turn to.
Gus Teddy saved my life.
Andy, that was a long time ago.
Yeah, it's funny how long you have to be grateful
for something like that.
'It's, it's like owing a bill'
for a long time to a big company.
You think maybe the company will forget about it..
...then one day, the mail..
...there's the bill..
...and it's got to be paid.
Don't.
Please, don't, Andy.
Stay away from him. Call him back.
Try to reason with him. Anything--
Reason?
Don't talk foolish, Maria Pierce.
Don't talk dreams.
Come on, we better get started.
[sighs] You know, it's kinda nice the sun shone bright
for a moment, eh?
Come on.
[instrumental music]
No, no, I'm not angry with you.
Yeah, kiss the kid for me.
And I'll call you in the next day or two
when, uh, this is all over.
Yeah, I know, I know.
I love you too.
Bye-bye.
[instrumental music]
I'd like to make a reservation for tomorrow.
Something that arrives in Chicago around noon.
No, no, I want something that lands in
one of the smaller airports, outside Chicago.
Art, uh, teletype from the Boston office.
They have an informant who reports that Andrew Fall
went to a safe deposit box this afternoon
removes some papers and left just before closing.
According to the informant, the box contains
records of La Cosa Nostra's New England operation.
- Then where did he go? - From the bank?
He drove to Logan International
where he booked a roundabout flight to Chicago
arriving, um, 12:30 tomorrow afternoon.
Tom, take reservations for Chicago.
Yes, sir.
Oh, Tom, this time make it for three.
[doorbell ringing]
- Who is it? - 'Vinnie.'
Alright, alright, I want some answers here, Maria.
What?
What did Andy Fall tell you this afternoon?
- You'll wake Cathy. - What did Andy tell you?
- Nothing, I just-- - Alright, now, stop it, Maria.
I have to get the truth now, I gotta get it fast.
I got a call early this evening from the bank.
Andy was there just before closing.
He took my records. Where?
I don't know.
Have you tried his house?
Yeah, sure I tried his house, nobody home.
The neighbor say Julia went to her sisters
out in Providence. So, I went out to Providence.
All the way out to Providence finding Julia.
Only Julia don't know where Andy is.
Tried the social club.
Only it wasn't a complete waste of time, Maria.
I wouldn't have known that Andy saw you just before he left
if she hadn't told me.
Where are they?
I can't tell you.
You do whatever you have to do, but I can't tell you.
Maria, now don't leave me with no other way to go.
[door opens]
[chuckles] This is the first time I've had the pleasure.
Maria.
I can handle this.
Oh, can you, Vinnie? Can you? I don't think so.
I think I better handle things from now on.
There are a few items I must get back
you do understand that, Maria?
- Don't touch her. - Touch her?
[chuckles] I'm surprised at you, Vince, I wouldn't touch her.
But maybe she doesn't understand
just how important those items are to me
and the people I love.
'I have a wife and kids to think about.'
Oh, but then you do understand, don't you?
You have a kid of your own sleeping in the other room.
Where is he, Maria?
Idaho.
In the meeting?
The Chicago Airport.
Uh, there's not much time. It will do.
Vince..
Now..
...I figured you might try to get to the council meeting
so I called Chicago.
Couple of our boys will be waiting at the airport for you.
You can use my plane.
'Now, you'll have plenty of time to get there before Andy.'
And when you get your hands on our property
I want you to take care of both of them, understand?
'And I want it done quietly.'
Well, Pete may not..
...let it end so quietly.
'Now, why don't you not worry about that?'
Because you're gonna make a deal with him before you leave.
To leave something behind alive.
Maria.
[instrumental music]
The main thing to remember is that
we have no formal charges against Fall.
We believe however that he's carrying important
La Cosa Nostra records in his attache case
destined for Peter Tenny.
If the transfer takes place, Tenny is to be arrested
and the records seized.
Our authority to do that
is a warrant outstanding on interstate gambling violations.
Plus the added charge of as*ault in border patrolman
John Bonner.
Units 2, 3 and 7 will take up surveillance on Fall
when he arrives in Chicago. Any news on that, Lewis?
Ah, yes, the plane's on time and he's on it
but there is a new development.
Uh, last night, Maria Pierce had a couple of visitors.
Manyan and Larry Bender.
This morning at 8:00, Bender's personal pilot took off
with the Pierce girl and Manyan as passengers
after following a flight plan for Philadelphia.
And they're not headed for Philadelphia.
No, they change course somewhere over New Jersey
and broke radio contact.
And Bender's plane has the capacity to reach Chicago.
Easily. We're alerting airports in the Midwest.
Well, gentleman, we're in it now.
When it comes to the actual arrest
extreme caution must be exercised
because of the crowds we'll have to contend with
at the airport.
It's going to take exact, well-coordinated timing.
[dramatic music]
Unit 1 to all units on the special, stand by.
[music continues]
That's Fall, alright.
Unit 1, Fall is approaching gate 77-B.
Maintain surveillance at fair range.
[music continues]
Stay with him.
Manyan should be here any minute.
[dramatic music]
- Mr. Manyan. - Yeah.
Charlie Chandler.
- Is Fall here? - Got in a few minutes ago.
Headed up to the terminal bar, my partner is watching him.
- Mm-hmm. What about Tenny? - Hasn't shown yet.
We better get moving.
- Vincent, please. - Forget it, Maria.
I don't get those papers, I'm a dead man.
Unit 4 to 1.
Go ahead, Tom.
Vincent Manyan arrived. Maria Pierce is with him.
'They were met by a man, unidentified.'
Where are they now?
They just entered the terminal.
- Thanks, Tom. Stand by. - '10-4.'
Manyan must have brought the girl with him as a hostage.
Yeah, he is in some kind of exchange.
Here, let me have it.
This is unit 1 to all positions..
[Manyan] 'Andy.'
How soon is my brother due?
So you found out.
Uh, suppose I shouldn't be too surprised.
Somehow you think..
It's all over for you, old man.
So just sit quiet, huh!
Unit 4 to 1.
One, go ahead.
A man strongly resembling Tenny
just landed in a helicopter, went into the terminal.
All units maintain your present positions.
Tom, will you join us here, please?
'10-4.'
There's a .45 under the table, Vinnie.
You do one thing that bothers me
and you're going to get a whole clip
right in the middle of your gut.
You're still faster than most, Pete.
But you gotta think ahead.
[instrumental music]
The kind that shoots the odds, huh, Pete?
You know, Vinnie, you're gonna burn in hell.
And maybe.
It's too dangerous to make an arrest in there, Lewis?
They'll be leaving soon.
[no audio]
You and I will go out the front.
The guy at the bar will go out with Andy.
We leave Maria alone.
But I'll come back for her afterwards
just to make sure that nothing happens to her.
You have my word, as a brother.
Well, I, uh..
This is your ball game.
Now, slip the g*n to me.
Easy.
You, uh, went through a lot of trouble to get that case.
You can carry it out for me.
Andy, you go first.
[intense music]
Tenny!
FBI.
You're under arrest for assaulting a federal officer
and interstate gambling.
I'll take that.
I imagine you wanna book that with the rest of my possessions
but I'd inventoried if I were you.
I wouldn't want anything in there to, uh, get lost.
[Tom] 'Mr. Fall!'
Just a moment, please.
We're with the FBI.
Is Maria alright?
- She is. - They were trying to k*ll me.
We know. That's what we want to talk to you about.
Mrs. Pierce, we're with the FBI.
It's all over now.
And your little girl is safe.
Thank you very much.
[instrumental music]
Cathy, I'll be home soon, darling.
I love you.
Oh, Gwen, do you think she recognized my voice?
Yes, well, I'll be home on Wednesday.
Take good care of her, huh?
Uh-huh, fine. Bye-bye.
Thank you.
[Ward] 'You've been a big help, Mrs. Pierce.'
I know sometimes it isn't easy.
Can I go now?
Yes, you'll be notified of the trial.
Could I possibly see Pete for a moment?
I don't see why not.
[male narrator] Peter Tenny and Frank Di Mirjian
were tried and convicted in federal court
for assaulting a federal officer.
Tenny was also convicted of interstate gambling violations
while Di Mirjian was convicted of interstate car theft.
Examination of the Tenny-Bender records
led to conviction under the anti-racketeering statues
of Vincent Manyan and Lawrence Bender.
