On the morning of October 18th

border patrol inspector, John Bonner

was rushed to an emergency hospital

near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

after being assaulted by two men

who had illegally crossed the US-Canadian border.

A description of the car and license number

was forwarded to Washington

to the FBI's National Crime Information Center

where it was discovered that the car had been stolen

three days earlier in Buffalo, New York.

The bureau's Identification Division

received latent fingerprints found on the car registration.

They matched those of long time courier for La Cosa Nostra

Frank Di Mirjian.

That's the man who was driving.

Hm. Well, thanks for your help, inspector.

Well, the sequence seems fairly clear.

Di Mirjian stole the car

drove it into Canada, picked up this other man

and they drove two-thirds of the way across Canada

before deciding to reenter the United States.

The question is who was this other man.

Hmm.

And what were they bringing across

that was important enough for them

to risk making it a federal case?

Narcotics?

Well, that's the first thought that comes to mind, of course

although Di Mirjian's never been involved

in narcotics before.

Well, in any case, the border inspector's identification

makes it possible for us to request a federal warrant.

We'll move on that and hope to identify

the other man as we go along.

[car approaching]

Lewis, I've been going over the criminal intelligence file

on Di Mirjian.

He's done a lot of traveling for La Cosa Nostra.

'He's been living in Baltimore recently'

'but makes a lot of trips to Miami.'

'He used to be a courier for old Gus Tenny in Boston.'

When did he move to Baltimore?

At the time the Tenny and Bender families

were at each other's throats?

His son, Peter Tenny, fled the country

when the Boston office started closing in

on a good interstate gambling case.

Yeah, he was indicted if I remember right.

Yes, and the warrant's still outstanding.

Now, we know Tenny's been all over Europe the past two years

but our liaison representative in Paris

reported that he's vanished.

He could be the second man.

Two years is a long time.

Long enough for Vincent Manyan to entrench himself

with the head of the family and lock Tenny out completely.

Yes, and if that's true

Tenny had no choice but to risk coming back and challenge him.

is imminent if Tenny regains control of the family.

His feeling is that Tenny will remain in the west.

On the basis of that, we've circulated wanted flyers

and notified the law enforcement agencies

in all them western states.

Of course, even if we locate Tenny and arrest him

there's no reason why he couldn't make bail

and continue on with his plan.

Mr. Ward, how does the Pierce girl fit into this?

Apparently she knew Tenny was returning

and, uh, went to meet him.

We don't know for sure yet.

We know that she returned to Boston last night

on the KBL flight out of Kansas City.

Of course she could've flown there from almost anywhere.

Couple of Manyan's men were there to meet her

so that she got home safely.

Later on, Manyan himself even showed up.

Boston office is keeping her under surveillance

'as well as Manyan and Bender.'

Di Mirjian feels that what Tenny wants

is proof of Manyan and Bender's scheming operation.

The informant has told us there's a gathering

of the high commission schedule for Chicago

within the next couple of days.

If Tenny could bring evidence before the commission

both Manyan and Bender would be on their way out.

Right, and this could tie in with a meeting

in an East Boston restaurant last night.

We think it's significant that Andrew Fall

the family counselor, the man closest

to both Gus Tenny and his son, was not invited.

[sighs]

You talked to Pete, didn't you?

Uh, just said it was good to see you.

He wanted you to bring him something, didn't he?

went to a safe deposit box this afternoon

removes some papers and left just before closing.

According to the informant, the box contains

records of La Cosa Nostra's New England operation.

- Then where did he go? - From the bank?

He drove to Logan International

where he booked a roundabout flight to Chicago

arriving, um, 12:30 tomorrow afternoon.

Tom, take reservations for Chicago.

The main thing to remember is that

we have no formal charges against Fall.

We believe however that he's carrying important

La Cosa Nostra records in his attache case

destined for Peter Tenny.

If the transfer takes place, Tenny is to be arrested

and the records seized.

Our authority to do that

is a warrant outstanding on interstate gambling violations.

Plus the added charge of as*ault in border patrolman

John Bonner.

Units 2, 3 and 7 will take up surveillance on Fall

when he arrives in Chicago. Any news on that, Lewis?

Ah, yes, the plane's on time and he's on it

but there is a new development.

Uh, last night, Maria Pierce had a couple of visitors.

Manyan and Larry Bender.

This morning at 8:00, Bender's personal pilot took off

with the Pierce girl and Manyan as passengers

after following a flight plan for Philadelphia.

And they're not headed for Philadelphia.

No, they change course somewhere over New Jersey

and broke radio contact.

And Bender's plane has the capacity to reach Chicago.

Easily. We're alerting airports in the Midwest.

Well, gentleman, we're in it now.

When it comes to the actual arrest

extreme caution must be exercised

because of the crowds we'll have to contend with

at the airport.

It's going to take exact, well-coordinated timing.

were tried and convicted in federal court

for assaulting a federal officer.

Tenny was also convicted of interstate gambling violations

while Di Mirjian was convicted of interstate car theft.

Examination of the Tenny-Bender records

led to conviction under the anti-racketeering statues

of Vincent Manyan and Lawrence Bender.
